I think I'd just trust their reason. Just because you eat out often, doesn't mean others do sufficiently to keep a restaurant - even a fantastic, acclaimed one - in business. Starting a restaurant is one of the most expensive and risky endeavors a person can do. From eating there frequently - at least once/month - I can attest that they tried different things: happy hours, brunches on different days, half-portions and prix fixe.

The poor economy can't be the only reason. I eat out often still. Perhaps they should have been charging more for drinks (someplaces want $10 for a mimosa in Manhattan) and maybe prix fixe menus during the off hours during the week.

I don't know if he/she was kidding or not, but food is ultimately fungible. My home cooking is no where as good as Ox's, but it's about $40 less expensive. I'm sorry to see Ox go, though. It was a great place for special occasions...

So what do you have against Sawadee? They are/were both great additions to the community. I used to eat in both regularly and I am very sad to see Ox go. I certainly would hate to see Sawadee go through similar problems, so what is your beef with them?

Sad to see them go.
I'll admit my wife and I have been eating in more since the economy tanked, more out of caution than necessity, but this makes me want to go to Madam Claude's tonight. I know some people can't afford to, but those who can should make a point to eat at one their local favs in light of of this. Chili's doesn't count, and they'll tow your car.

To echo what EVERYONE else has said, this truly is a sad day that we lose our dear Ox restaurant. I understand how upsetting and difficult this must be for Nicole and the entire staff so I will simply say good luck to all of you. You will be missed.

To Ox-posters:
Thank you so much for your interest in Ox, to clear the air we closed due to the poor economy. It is no secret that people can't afford to eat out as much as they used to. Opening any business in the first place is risky and expensive, but who knew the world ecomomy would tank within a year of opening. It was the kiss of death. This is a difficult time for all of us, therefore I will not be responding to any subsequent posts on this subject. Again thank you for caring enough about Ox to post. Respectfully, Nicole Chef/Co-Owner Ox Restaurant P.S. -Is Atomic Wings hiring? :)

I wonder if they felt that atomic wings would steal their business when they open up (next week?)
Sux though that we lost another restaurant. We have so few good ones. I am guessing that it might have been something like their landlord (seeing they were successful) totally jacked up their rent to make it totally unaffordable to do business. Hopefully someone will take over and another new restaurant will take its place. Or, maybe the owners are going to take the summer off and then come back in the fall and rebrand the place and introduce a whole new menu. it's possible. But they didn't go into details as to why they're closing. Although they did hint its probably the economy. FG

Or the oxtail or the seafood newburg. I should have gone more often. Entrees that make you want to lick the plate were the norm at OX. Come back soon or let us know where you all end up - we'll come and eat there too.

Web site now has a letter, probably the same as the one at the restaurant:
http://www.oxrestaurant.com/ But it doesn't go into detail as to why. Ugh, I'm regretting now choosing another restaurant last week over Ox for one last meal...I'm craving the risotto or octopus salad... :(

The picture of the letter is a bit blurry, does it give a "reason" for the closure? Does it basically corroborate the earlier posts? Perhaps if it was a difference of opinion between ownership/chef/partners, perhaps they'll reopen under a new name/ownership structure...

There are so few places around here that "get it", damn shame to lose one. This place definitely kept us from going into the city on many occasions - having a place where the food was always inventive (and of course good) and the service was always friendly just a few blocks away was a real selling point for the neighborhood. This sucks.

That is a let down. Best combo of atmosphere and food in downtown JC. Sorry to see them go.
Nothing on the website says why they closed.

Ox has indeed closed its doors. A sad day for Jersey City's dining scene and for the owners and employees. Wishing them the best of luck in future endeavors.

Wow! It simply doesn't make any sense to close down a restaurant if it was profitable - it borders on the irresponsible. Egos should have been put aside to amke the venture work.
