Re: An open letter to the Dog Owners of DTJC (brace yourselves)

As a dog owner in JC - I agree with mRanger. A comprimise needs to be reached in the use of Morris Canal Park - especially allllll the way at the end of the point.

So much work has been put into refurbishing and landscaping of Van Vorst and Hamilton Park, many residents make use of the great ammenties AND those parks do have dog runs - off leash dogs have no place in those parks.

Morris Canal Park is just a peninsula with an amazing view, there are no man-made ammenities like playgrounds, gardens or sitting areas for people to enjoy at the end of the peninsula.

Why not let dogs be dogs and just allow them to run around on grass and play fetch within a designated area? Of course with owners picking up dog waste. (Seriously I don't get how some owners can just LEAVE it there and not clean up after your dog).

Has anyone made a suggestion for Morris Canal Park to be leash free during certain hours (like Central Park?) Or maybe a leash free area like at the end of the point?

mRanger, great post.

What i've seen in previous posts is that people feel the dog park proposal in LSP is too small and too far away.

You just can't please them, dude...

I see this thread has become award winning since last i visited....my thoughts (from one ranger fan to another):

Regarding leash laws:

Hamilton Park - 100% 24/7 all dogs must be on leash. Way too much going on over there for them not to be.

Van Vorst Park - 100% 24/7 all dogs must be on leash. I know all the hard work and effort that went into refurbishing that park, and the beautiful landscaping and flowers that encompass the inside. An amazing job was done by all there, and in no way should dogs be allowed to traipse through and ruin it all.

Morris Canal Park - I think we need to have some leniency there with regard to off leashing dogs. As Colleen stated, if my dog is offleash all the way out by the point, is it REALLY bothering u that much out there? In fact, I actually was there this week with my dog (on leash) and saw a cop there w/ his canine (off leash) playing out by the point. I asked the cop about leash laws and he said as long as it's not bothering anyone out here, it shouldn't be a problem, just make sure u pick up after ur dog - we want to keep the park clean for everyone to use. What that cop said is probably the most reasonable statement I have heard or read regarding this matter. And also, I've read some people posting about getting an active dog in an urban environment. Well, I'm sorry that wasn't going through my mind when my future to-be-adopted dog was on the "kill list", when i rescued him.

As far as I'm concerned we should only become anal retentive over-actors about dogs being off leash (in an area that affects barely anyone) if we see a refurbishment like this:

Resized Image

As far as not picking up dog crap: That sh*t needs stop everywhere. People like that should not have dogs. In retrospect, I do agree with many points in this thread. However, I do feel it should not be all one-sided as some are trying to make it out to be. The point out in Morris Canal Park needs to be some sort of concession by nyrgravey and the other prosecutors about off leashing dogs EVERYWHERE. I do retract my stance if and when they decided to refurbish the park.

We also tried Pershing Field last week too, was impressed at the cleanliness and the facility (went with low expectations - having been a swimmer all through middle & high school, I have swam at some not so nice venues). There were a couple lanes open for lounging and the rest of the pool was lap lanes. Water was crystal clear and bottom was very clean.

My friend and I went Tuesday morning for lap swimming, it was really nice! I only wish they opened at 6AM...7AM is cutting it a bit too close to get into the city and into the office by 9... :/

Yes, the Lafayette pool has adult swim until 10 a.m. I was there this morning from about 9-9:30. There were 6 or 7 of us swimming laps and another 4 or 5 socializing in the pool in a corner. All adults. Very quiet and relaxing. It's also clean (at least in the morning). I hope more people will start going because today was one of the busier mornings I've experienced, and if that doesn't keep up, I fear the hours will change. I don't want to lose the adult swim time on weekday mornings!

(And if you go, bring your ID. The woman at the gate recognizes me now, but still checks my license every time.)

One of the highlights of the ride was the little girl who was out independently riding her bike (I wanna say by Mallory/Lincoln Park) and just decided to join in the bike tour...she was having a great time keeping up with everyone as part of the parade...I was watching her, and didn't think she was with a guardian, was going to let a Marshall know, but lost sight of her...when we got to Dickinson, the police had pulled her out of the group and to the side...everyone was yelling, Don't arrest the little girl! And the cop shouted back, no no we aren't, don't worry - but her Mom wants her back home!

It was really cute...they probably put her and her bike in a squad car and took her home...she was far away from her house!

The local Ocean County paper has much better coverage - they even had a special section on the "Ritacco Raid"

This is a huge deal in TR...I'm a graduate of the TR School system and have friends who are now teachers in the schools - so I've been hearing all the follow-up...pretty crazy stuff.

The new owner is a young guy who is really excited about his new business opportunity. He spent a lot of time cleaning out the old place - I'm a neighbor so he gave me a tour to show me how much work he did..it is really spotless in there now. My understanding is that he still has to offer pizza as a term under his lease...but he wants to make it more healthy (like whole wheat dough/grilled veggie options). I can't wait to try some of his food!

I'm really not sure what was going on either, but here is what I observed - The cops had collected evidence which looked like soda cans in evidence bags. Also a car parked in front of the yoga studio was said to be stolen, so they were reclaiming it and getting it towed.

I am considering highlights at Shampoo JC and was wondering if anyone specifically has had highlights done (by which stylist) and what their experience was. I am used to going to a great Soho salon but my stylist works so infrequently these days I would love a local alternative. I tried a couple of local places before-- somewhere in Hoboken that gave me brassy highlights and the worst ever was from the former Retro salon (now called something else, on Grove near bike shop)-- they gave me green tinted highlights, sloppily placed, for nyc prices.

I have the same exact question! I really need some honey/caramel blonde highlights & am looking for a cheaper alternative than my pricey NYC salon. But you do get what you pay for.....

Because of this same problem, we usually just park our car in the Avistar lot by Newark Airport...I believe it is like $8 a day...although this would not work for you if you aren't leaving from Newark Airport.

it looks like there are beginner classes & it is a laid-back studio - I wouldn't feel the need to have to buy new workout clothes to take a class. I'd prob wear shorts & a Tshirt myself.

Had the chicken last night! My husband & I were lucky enough to get the last two Grab n Go dinners - we stopped by around 7:30 on our way home from a run. It was excellent! Also, loved the carrots & mashed potatoes. The hubby didn't even use any hot sauce on the chicken & for him that is saying something. I'm glad we have this option for dinner now - I can't wait to try the meatloaf!

I don't see any problem crossing the foot bridge at the end of Jersey Ave...I do it all the time running alone or with groups (I am also a not so big white female) at all different times of the day/night.

In the mornings on weekends there are many people who take that route - dog walkers, bikers, runners/walkers. You'd be surprised at how many people use the park at very early hours - I've even seen people there on weekday mornings. On the weekend you should have no problems.

When my hubby and I went to Soul Flavors - we got the fried chicken - they gave you 5 full pieces! They said they heard some feedback that the portion was too small - so they increased it...I think you can also get a double order as well. I don't know if they changed it, haven't been there in a few months as we are on diets :)

Christine16 - Unfortunately I have not had time/patience to take the dress back. The wedding I needed the dress fixed for is this saturday & I had to go to San Francisco to visit my husband's family last week & have just gotten home. I couldn't take the risk that they couldn't fix it or would pull the same bs. I ended up taking the dress to a bridal store in my home town (where the wedding is) - I actually had to take time off of work to do so. I was going to Jon's to hopefully avoid this & got screwed. The bridal store said that they didn't even mark the straps correctly for alteration & it was not altered. Jon's took my pink receipt when I picked the dress up - so I don't even have proof that I took the dress there...I guess at this point it is a sunk cost.

Jon's Cleaner's - Newport Mall
#28

Hi All - Just a little PSA w/ Jon's cleaner's at the Newport Mall. I needed a bridesmaid dress altered - liked the hours & convienence of the mall. Wanted to be charged a fair price.

The person behind the counter was very courteous & helpful, said the tailor on staff alters dresses all the time, don't need an appointment - come right in. I got fitted, they made those white soap marks on the dress, i left - was charged a fair price.

Now this is where it all changes - I pick up my dress, was in a hurry, but they don't even offer to let me try it on. I figure it would be fine. I get it home AND THEY DID NONE OF THE ALTERATIONS. The straps are still falling off my shoulders and the white soap marks are still there! Also the hook enclosure is not fixed, and was not taken in/out appropriately. I am so angry that this was not finished - you have no idea. I learned my lesson - maybe they are better w/ pant hems - but not w/ anything more complicated.

Bottom Line - STAY AWAY!

My husband and I both do personal training with Ken, the personal training manager. He is very knowledgeable. I believe he has several certifications for training, nutrition, etc. I have been working out w/ him for 5 weeks and have lost several inches. I definitely recommend him as a trainer. :)
