Yeah, riding a loud motorcycle at 3-4 am, while not illegal, is truly tasteless and extremely inconsiderate.

Regular city noise (sirens, etc) doesn't bother me much, but inconsiderate and unnecessary city noise bothers me, like people who have their dogs in the dog park at 2 am, and allow the dogs to bark loudly. Motorcycle riding at 4 am would also fit into this category.
it is illegal actually, there are noise ordinances in most cities during nighttime hours, and a lot of places have restrictions on how loud your car/bike can be regardless of the hour.

A bit against the grain i know but, Does anyone have an interest in renting out some garage space in DTJC with me to work on and store motorcycles?

motorcyles were tearing thru the heights all day sunday, some in packs and some individually. it's families up there with kids on the street - it's just not safe to have a dozen guys speeding down the streets and revving their motorcycles. when they drive like that they are less likely to pay attention to kids that have a tendency to run into the streets. and personally i moved to a family neighborhood so i didn't have to hear noise pollution from a bunch of guys on crotch rockets.

Take your post, for instance. First, you griped. Your next step should be picking fights with the softies.

Most motorcycles made after 1982 must have an EPA noise compliant exhaust with a label certifying such embossed into the muffler. It's illegal under federal law to replace the noise compliant exhaust with one that's not compliant or to tamper with the legal muffler. It's the widespread violations of this law that has lead to the growing problem of loud motorcycles.

The best way to address this problem is for New Jersey to adopt and enforce the EPA label law.

There's more information on why and how to curb loud motorcycles on the Maine Citizens For Quiet Motorvehicles Facebook page.

What makes any one think the Cops will do anything when they are the major law breakers when it comes to thier own personal bikes. The cops come to the Cigar store on Grove Street and from either Bay or Morgan ride right down the middle of the sidewalk. This is with engines running. Then they park on the side walk. The building owner has had words with a few of them over it.

oh come on dude, you just called loud motorcycles "a very real problem"

i'm busting chops because i'd imagine someone who knows a "Ducati expert" so well would know how to spell "Ducati"

and whether i was born here or just moved here a year ago its still just as much "my city"

lets not take ourselves too seriously here..

That's a classic... Such crude violence is too Mad Max in my book- but admittedly in certain cases, I do feel a tiny happy tickle of schadenfreude at the idea of a little fear or humility is introduced into a clueless bastards tiny mental reality. Often that's the only thing which keeps them "in check".

I recall in Cali circa 80's/early 90's gangs and rival cycle riders would sneak out at night and 'oil slick' certain roads frequented by foes they knew would speed down. Tit for tat only escalated the tension, eventually cops would ban large groups from riding together and keep an eye on everyone. Generally a bad scene in a tough era.

Honest, responsible riders who rode solo for pleasure were never hassled though.

Do we have a passive aggressive grammar nazi on board? Neat! I love how in the last decade only the best and brightest moved here all eager beaver to ingratiate themselves with the JC milieu...

PhDog, please do offer your smug corrections, just to make yourself feel superior while charitably molding your poor simpleton neighbor into a better person and generally do your part in saving the world.

Btw, congrats on keeping on point, that helps add to the discussion and get the very real problem solved.

Stupid, stupid, stupid--it really could kill a motorcyclist.

Many judges will throw out any ticket like this without a device giving the reading, so cops won't even waste their time and write them. Where I used to live, the police officers were not equipped with a device to measure the amount of tint on windows. Even though front window tinting is illegal in NJ, the judge in that city knew the cops didn't have the meter and would throw out any tint tickets as a result. Long story short, cops in that city generally will not write tint tickets.

Why am I not shocked that the simplest ways to solve problems never come up? A cop could doc tinting with a cell camera and post-its. A post-it inside and outside the window, photo showing the difference. Done. I'll bet there's a similar way to use a cheap device and a tape measure to measure db.

Move to the suburbs!

Classic JC List response.

When people complain about
- inconsiderate noise
- crime
- garbage in the street
- city corruption
- lousy schools
- crazy drivers
tell them to move out.

Maybe we could try to make our city better instead of just telling everyone to get out so that the only ones living in the city are stricken with poverty and crime.

No shit, sherlock. I thought being the first post and prefacing it with "Let's get this out of the way immediately" would drip the post in enough sarcasm for the average poster here to understand. Apparently not.

I was once standing outside a bar in midtown near a cop when a guy gets on his Harley, fires it up, and it clearly has straight pipes. All conversation ceases, including the cop's, but he does nothing. When the bike is gone and we can speak again I ask the cop why he didn't give the guy a ticket, since for once he was right there standing still, not roaring past at 100 mph and 150db. He mumbles something about not having a decibel meter and how was he going to prove he had no muffler. Jeez, cops give tickets on their word against our all the time!

although annoying, I've almost become used to the loud bikes. don't like it, but am starting to accept it's part of my surroundings. what annoys the crap out of me is when they tear down a narrow street and set off a bunch of car alarms in the process. It's like saying FU and here's something to remember me by. ugh.....!

The loud motorbike saves lifes debate is rubbish - And bikes that claim it does simply have little diks and need the attention. Imagine if every bicyclist had the same theory and what about electric cars.........everyone will demand loud obnoxious vehicles and use safety as the reason....

Agreed. I've lived and grown up on both sides and rude people/noises/circumstances happen everywhere. Honestly I don't understand what the expectation is with noise in JC. No matter if everyone of your neighbors is compliant with your noise rules...you've got people who will visit.

Hudson County is highly populated/trafficked...where in the hell did you think you moved into??

It probably is illegal. But only in the same way that a really loud car stereo is as well. Unless there is someone around to enforce the law, then it's just a matter of what you can get away with.
