I was told by another shopkeeper on the street that the Sava space was being reopened by one of the principals of Buon Appetito.

I thought the owner of Sava was sick, I didn't know she died. Sorry to hear that.

This restaurant closure and pizza joint replacement highlights the true disposable income of the local neighborhood - Many live in a 99c dream economy while pretending to be 5th Ave foodies.

JC has had a huge turnover / failings in the food / restaurant industry, basically through the lack of local patronage

Name a quality restaurant that has failed recently in DTJC. If it's quality, it'll make it to DTJC regardless of price. The closure is because the owner died, and besides Sava wasn't exactly 5th avenue foodie, so your statement is ridiculous. Sorry your 99 cent stores are still on the way out of DTJC.

We don't even know what kind of pizza place this will be. It could be another Razza or Roman Nose as far as we know. Do you consider Razza or RN to be 99c establishments because they sell pizza?

Maybe Buon Appetito is moving back to Grove?

Ridiculous - its more a case of your ignorance.

I've lived in JC and Bayonne all my child and adult life (lets say more then 35 years but less then 50 years) and just on JClist alone, the topic of food businesses folding is nothing new with rent and local patronage being a cause.
I have frequented many and most with great review and fanfare which have also failed.

If you speak to the owners of some unsuccessful restaurants as I have, you start to hear a familiar story of a good office crowd during lunch time but poor night time and week-end local patronage to keep the doors open - It's one of the reasons I'm no fan of hit and run food vans during the lunch rush hour.

I have a local bank manager friend that even tells me that basically, the businesses doing well are your cheap eats, diner and fast food establishments. JC residents are extremely budget conscious with a smaller disposable income then NY'ers.

I also believe it has a lot to do with the design of apartments and homes in JC; On this side of the Hudson we have larger more modern kitchens for home cooking / entertaining, whereas in Manhattan, the older apartments have extremely small kitchenettes that force people out to eat.

This is just my opinion based on personal experience and information directly provided by those affected or indirectly in the know.

What about city diner? It looks cheesy, but the omelettes are pretty solid and well-priced.

So sad. This was a great place. I have a Polish heritage, and this stuff was the real deal. I am so sorry to hear of the owner's illness.

Another pizza place? Who is eating all of this pizza?!?

I'd love to see place that sells awesome salads. Not that make your own type you often see in the City, but super fresh, delicious unique salads with homemade dressing. It is so hard to find an amazing salad anywhere in NYC or Jersey!

JC also needs another diner. The Brownstone is always jammed.

This is terrible news. Sava was actually the first restaurant I visited upon moving to Jersey City. Great food and a great intro the the area.

I wish Jadwiga the very best in her battle with cancer.

Oh damn that is awful, she is so nice. Food was great and you couldn't beat the prices. So sorry to hear this.

I'm lost on what to do for Polish food now - first Europa now this.

Very sad. I noticed she was always coughing, and I'm not sure if she smoked but her husband constantly did. Hope she is able to make a recovery.

I am glad you mentioned that. We are worried about them and are trying to find someone to care for and feed the cats. We cannot even get into the back of the buildings to see where the cats are now. Are you familiar with the area and stores there?

I don't have a Polish grandmother, but I still agree with the previous poster but one. If I had a Polish grandma, she would make and serve food like Sava. Too bad Tania's is gone but you still have Europa (if you want to cook yourself) or Sava (if you don't). Polish food rocks in winter.

I bought some stuffed cabbage last week and it was very good. The owner told me how much work it was to make the stuffed cabbage. Stuffed cabbage and guilt - just like grandmama.

The owner is super nice too

Yeah, she is very nice - but she had laryngitis the last time was I in there -- and that was a little off putting for her being the chef. I also always had the hardest time getting her to heat up a dozen pierogies - this was true here and at her old location - and yes even then never fresh boiled just zapped! I also once got a bone in a soup she swore was vegetarian. I wish her well - she is very nice.

I think they nuke the food after they cook it, or nuke it from the get go.
