You show up, they heard you in a giant room, no cellphones, but you can use a laptop and read. They separate you into groups. Each group is lead into court rooms to meet a judge, he then calls out your number. People are seperated into jury pools and if you're not called you can go home. Most of the judges if you try to say you can't make it will just reschedule to come back. Petit jury lasts until the trial ends usually. :I had grand jury... 12 weeks.

Thanks, I think I'm going to take the 80 bus. It seems easy enough. From where I live, to walk to the Grove St. PATH and then walk from J Sq to the court is probably about the same as walking from my house to the cout. If the weather were better, I could walk.
I have another question: Can I wear headphones at jury duty? I was thinking about bringing a movie to watch on my laptop and headphones. Or do you need to be able to hear announcements or something? Thanks!

Last time I was called for jury duty I just took Path to Journal Square and walked a few blocks to the courthouse.
It worked then, but Wednesday may be a different story with the 6 inches of snow expected.

The jitney is the easiest way to get there. It'll drop you off, but I think you have to go all the way around to the front. (It goes behind the courthouse and then comes down Newark before going to Palisade.)
Just ask the driver. I think it's 1.25. You can shop at Mahoney's Meats on your break. Eat a raw steak on the jury stand, might get you out of it.

A lot of regular NJ Transit buses go from Exchange Place past Grove, up Newark past the Courts. I think route 80 is the most frequent. Fare is $1.50. Check out the planner: http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servle ... nPageAction=TripPlannerTo

I took the path when i went to Jury duty. Its a very quick walk from JSQ. If you do drive, you will need to pay for parking because there isnt any street parking over there. Bring a laptop if you can. If you do bring one, try to get there early so you can grab one of the desks that have power outlets.

I have jury duty this week. Wednesday, actually, so I'm thinking that maybe when I call in I won't be needed if we get the snowstorm we're expecting.
Has anyone ever taken the jitney up the hill from downtown JC? Does it stop by the courthouse? Where do I get it? How much does it cost? I figured it might be easier than driving. Thanks!

I went pretty recently. I can't understand how ANYBODY gets put on a jury. You have to have literally no opinion on anything and zero life experience to not be disqualified.
But they do have a pretty good internet connection, and it's very laid back.

No that is not what I was implying. In Hudson County a person can serve on jury duty at the age of 18 and over. I implied that being a new canidate (age 18) they would not gotten to that person yet. By your late 20's into your early 30's you would have been called already.

Or not much older than that?!? What are you saying, only 18-20 year olds can serve as jurors?

I'm 30, I've been in J.C. over 5 years, and I've never been called for jury duty anywhere that I've lived.
I have a theory, though, that NYers get called much more often. All of my NYC friends seem to get called all the time. Both my mother AND my aunt got called for jury duty for the end of October. They're happy that at least they'll be able to hang out together for a while, maybe get lunch together or car pool to the courthouse together. My mother is 50+, lived in NJ since she was born, and this is the first time she's been called in about 20 years.

You must be 18 years of age or not much older than that. If you are older and new to J.C. didn't you serve in the last town you lived in or where you grew up ? Bring plenty of reading material, leave the head phones on one ear so you are not distracted to hear you name being called or conned by another juror.

Not too shy to talk

I just served two weeks ago. I sat around all day, watched lots of people go in and out to be on a panel, then watched some people go home early and then at 3:30 was called up to be on a jury panel. They let us out at 4:15 and we had to come back the next day to start the panel picking process. The first day was terribly boring, just bring stuff to do, read, laptop (they have wi-fi). The second day I didn't have to get there until 11 which was nice. I should've come back for a third day also b/c they hadn't picked the jury yet after day two, but I spoke with the judge and I was excused. It was kind of interesting being there while they start the panel picking process, long and boring though at the same time.
I had jury duty another time about 4 years ago and I sat there all day and was never called and then they didn't need me the next day.

I was dreading the day I had to go in due to the fact I had just started a new job and was freelance so I didn't get paid for the days I would miss. Alas, I called the number the night before and was outright released. My advice: Bite the bullet and get it over with. Sometimes you get lucky. But if you are called, I agree with everyone else here, and bring some headphones and a long book.

From my one time experience it was just time consuming. I went in when called, stayed all day (until 3pm), and then they let us out but told us to come back tomorrow. I then went back the next day for about two hours and then they let the people who had been there the previous day out. I never served, but just sat around. My advice to you is bring something to occupy yourself, a book or work of some kind. This was in NY, but I am pretty sure NJ may be the same.

Bring plenty of reading material...
Most of your co-jurors are morons and/or only care about getting released by 3pm each day. The assistant prosecutors are worse--truly the most arrogant b*stards you'll ever encounter. It's enough to make you question your faith in our judicial system. Or at least what passes for a judicial system in Hudson County.
