The Helen's huddle is harmless. (Ha! didn't plan that.)

The guys who duck in and out of the 24-hour grocery at all hours? Who knows.

And why an 8-pound infant requires 80 pounds of gear to travel around the block remains a mystery for the ages.

I hope English is not your first language.

And also, thank you for your fantastic contribution to the topic. You make us all very proud to have you as a neighbor.

yeah, the potential loitering drug dealers are actually outside of Frank's pizzeria/Rivera's Grocery on the corner of 4th and monmouth. I'm watching though, and I have cameras. And no, they aren't black.

Thanks for helping clean up Monmouth bet. 3rd and 4th DCof JC...your effort is much appreciated!

Parents need the behometh strollers because they are convenient to carry diapers/toys/books/change of clothes/bottles/food and the other sundry items that are required to go for a walk with an infant. Sorry raising the next generation is such a bother to you.

Also, back to the topic at hand, the old dudes by Helen's are harmless.

An excellent criticism of prejudice...

I assure you I could walk right down your street and show you the houses, corners and places where there are legitimate illegal activities going on right under your noise and you probably don't even realize it. Yet, you pick on and frown upon older men who are really just "hanging out" watching the world pass by. Yes, maybe some have substance abuse problems, and or other problems, so I guess since you have moved in we should get rid of them? Who the hell are you?

Followed by an excellent example...

And what about those old guys on Wayne St who are always playing dominoes? I bet they don't even report their gambling winnings to the IRS.

I agree that they're just guys hanging out. If they were drug dealers, they're not doing much in the way of hustling. If I'm thinking of the same old men, more than once I have seen one of them loaded in the ambulance later at night - I assumed he had just passed out, but I don't really know.

I've travelled throughout the world, and every country on every continent I've been to has elderly men who choose (and it is their right) to "hang out" in public where they wish. Unfortunately in this country we don't have plazas which would serve as a public meeting place for them.

I think we do have plazas, not many, but a few. They could hang out near the Grove Street plaza, or even that tiny "park" at the corner of Jersey and Newark. Even across the street from there, by the bank, there are a few benches and a wider sidewalk. And then there's the bigger parks like Van Vorst. I think the reason why they hang out near Helen's or the liquor store across the street is simply because it's closer to the liquor store.

I have lived here since '97 and not a single time have any of them ever attempted to sell me anything...if they are "selling" drugs, they are not doing a very good job.

Relax.

I talked to one of the employees of the 24/7 deli-mart next to Helen's and he said he's lost track of how many times he's called the police on them.

Well, if they ARE drug dealers, then they are not loitering. They are working.

Those same sad drunks have been there since the nineteen-fifties.
They are essentially harmless, tho newcomers often remark
that they are unsightly.

I hear they have installed a bullet-proof glass screen along the middle of that street to segregate the sidewalks !

Safety first - avoid the street all together - baby in stroller can't run !

Why do you think they are selling drugs? Is it because they are Latino? They are just a bunch of old dudes who hang out together. There are people doing a lot worse than standing around loitering and ogling women.

Does anyone know what's going on with the older Latino men that hang out constantly right next to the 24/7 deli-mart next to Helen's Pizza? They also hang out across the street from Helen's in front of the Vincente deli-mart.

Are these men selling drugs or what? Every single time I walk by Helen's, the same older Latino men for YEARS now are out there loitering and ogling.

Do they have nothing better to do?
