I really like Dr. Cohen on Newark Ave. near Jersey Ave. Their sign says Cosmetic Dentistry but, as Dr. C says, it's more like pretty general dentistry.

I was just there today, as a matter of fact.

Has anybody been to Grove Street Dental Office? Dr. Vladimir Dranovski?

Thanks for any other recommendation in the area.

My entire family goes to John Vitale, DMD - his office is on Chapel Ave in Port Liberte. In addition to regular checkup's, I've also had root canal performed. He's a wonderful dentist.

I changed a few months ago to Jacky Paramo, 42 Central Avenue by Route 139. 201-222-8200. She's NYU trained, very reasonable, very professional. She's been in JC for about 12 years. She did some bondings for me & her hygienist is very thorough.....
I took a jitney bus up Newark Avenue & he left me off at the first stop on Palisade Avenue & then I walked over.... There's parking there...
She came recommended to me.

I went to Dr. Hanna for the first time last week. She's wonderful. Very professional and understanding. (She didn't give me a hard time about my lack of dental visits). I definitely recommend her.
ALSO, for people without a good dental insurance plan, there are dental discount cards. I found mine on dentalplans.com. The plan costs about $100 for the year, and gives an average of 30% off most things. Cleanings and exams are free. I had two fillings, which would have totaled $350, but with the card it was only $199. (Dr. Hanna takes Northeast/Southeast) These are good even for people who do have insurance, since most dental insurance plans only pay what they consider to be a reasonable price, not the actual price of a procedure.

I have seen Mikhailov, Alexander M, DDS and he is horrible. Do not go to any of the dentist in Newport mall. They are just no good. I suggest Dr banes in Central Avenue, if hes still there. My son and I went to Medrano near Van Vorst park. She was good too, but the appts are a long wait.

Dr. Lustiger at Exchange Place is great, I can highly recommend him. I never had to wait more than five minutes, he does great work, is friendly, and uses state of the art equipment. My wife and I are both very happy with him.

Went to Paul Lustiger for a first visit today - everything perfect - no wait, high tech machinery, friendly & competent staff. Dentist was friendly and low-keyed (don't you hate it when dentists rank not flossing up there with incest and folkdancing?).

I like that the x-rays are put on a computer screen and you can see what he is talking about. Strongly recommend. Takes Metlife, not sure about any others.

I have been going to Dr. Milman for a while now. Great doctor, I definitelly recomend him. Did a great job and my teeth never looked better. I have tried some other dentists around before I found Dr. Milman but would not recommend them.

As far as laughing gas is concerned, yes they do advertise it on the window just like everything else, but the doctor did not even mention it until I asked about it and did not push for it at all, which I liked, because some dentists try to sell you stuff you might not need. I'd say definitelly check him out if you need a great dentist... (Speaking from experience)

However, is it my imagination or do they seem to push that 'deep scaling' treatment on everyone?

(deep scaling = they numb your mouth and scrape under your gums, it has to be done over 4 sessions, once for each quadrant of your mouth. the procedure is only 50% covered by insurance).

Been going to him for close to 10 years, and never had that treatment 'pushed' on me. Also, over the last couple of years, his practice has expanded due to include 2(?) other dentists within the office. Have had sessions with one other (whose name escapes me) besides Lustiger. No complaints.

THE BEST dentist in JC is Dr. Spiro Papadatos, on the corner of Monmouth and Bright near Pathmark...I LOVE THAT MAN and go "out of network" to see him (even though I pay more) because it's worth it. He is very honest, thorough, careful and generally just a nice, nice guy who knows what he's doing....very good to the community as well. (See?)

I used Lustinger for several years and never had the deep what-do-ya-call it thing brought up. I think Paul Lustinger is great and would definitely recommend him if insurance covers him. I used him while living downtown.

Now that I live in the JSQ area I use Complete Dental Care
201-216-0011 ? 40 Journal Sq # 325, Jersey City,NJ

I find the dentist/owner Kathleen Winans to be of the same caliber as Lustinger. Her office is right next to the PATH in JSQ so it is an easy commute if you take the PATh train or bus from that station.

I agree that the Newport Dental Center is utterly worthless - they misdiagnosed me and cost me months in the chair. Try Dr. Colucci on Kennedy & Montgomery - nice guy, good work, office is never overbooked.

I had a really terrible experience at Newport Centre Dental, too. They botched a filling replacement which left me in agony for 12 hours! They tried to convince me that I was just experiencing sensitivity because of the new filling. I felt like my head was about crack open so I insisted that they see me again. Turns out some over zealous drilling left a nerve exposed. That simple filling replacement turned into a root canal. Needless to say, I didn't go back to that practice for the rc procedure.

I'd rather pay out of pocket then return to that place again. I kinda feel sorry for all those people who don't seem to have a choice. There's always a ton of people and families spilling out of the waiting room into the mall waiting for their appointments.

Very bad experience there. I literally got up from the chair and left mid-procedure.

I was going to put this in a PM, but why shouldn't everyone know...

I was there when the receptionist PUNCHED a patient in the face when she dared to ask for a referral while the receptionist was on a personal phone call.

All heck broke loose.

When there's a fist fight while your tooth is being extracted, I think it's a good time to get out of there.

That was the 2nd time I was there.

The first time, there was a substitute dentist who was drinking when she saw me. Yes, I was the last appointment of the day, but still....

i looked into them when i was looking for a dentist but didn't find a great deal of satisfying info. my recommendation is:

John Vitale, DMD - General Dentist
24 Chapel Ave
Jersey City, NJ 07305
Ph: 201-521-980

take the $1.50 bus from grove path and it drops you off right there and back. state of the art equipment and a really nice and informative staff...i would highly recommend plus they will work with any insurance carrier

I used to go to Dr. Cohen's but my insurance changed so I had to take their x-ray and go to another dentist. At Dr. Cohen's I was told that I had many cavities that need to be fixed, costing like $2000 but when I went to the new one, they told me I had no cavities!! To make sure, I went to another dentist and they also told me I didn't have any cavities. I recommend to double check if you go to Cohen's.

Dr. Nancy Hannah is my recommendation- my wife and 3 kids have been going to her for 17 years, no complaints from anyone. She's in JSQ, 201-433-0773.

Lesser_Demon,
Its funny that you mention that your co-workers think Dr. K pushes for unnecessary things. I had the same thought when the gf went in for one issue and ended up going back for a bunch of "preventive" things. They do treat her very well and she has been happy with the service but after your comment, combined with my suspicions, I guess I would now hesitate in recommending him.

Just want to add that I use Dr. Cohen myself, who I'm pretty happy with. He finally pushed me into getting braces (from Dr. Lombardi on Kennedy Blvd, if anybody's interested), which I've needed for years.

(As an aside, I have a couple of co-workers use Dr. K and _they_ think he pushes them into unnecessary cleanings and stuff. I don't use him so I don't know myself)

Also, Dr. Cohen does take Aetna, so I'm pretty sure Dr. K would too.
