It's attitudes like this that are going to keep Jersey City an ugly, second class city. Jersey City has the potential to be much more than ugly, Staten Island style townhouses - all garage, so people can store their junk and still park the mini-van out front - congestion, and environmental degredation. Not to mention overtaking the City's infrastructure and ability to deliver services which will in no way be covered by whatever real estate taxes these properties bring in.

The Embankment, the Powerhouse, the cobblestone streets, the loft buildings in PADNA, these give Jersey City a sense of place. We need leadership to cultivate an appreciation for them, and turn them into something!

Well said!!

The renderings can be found on this site. This looks like a major improvement.

That's just one of MANY plans (more than 6 years old) Hyman's architect has come up with over the years. It seems their 'visions' for the embankment parcel is whatever they feel will get them the rights to 'develop' at that time. Remember this one (sorry for the poor scan, it ran in Jersey Journal a few years ago):

Sounds right.

Since last year or so these waterfront high rises were renting their units well below market rate. It seemed they were signing low rate leases just to get bodies into what had become unsalable. Everyone who's renting their high rise apartments at a steal will soon be confronted with the same hard decision you're faced with: move or pay up.

This glut of low(er) rent luxury units really hit the small landlord pretty hard. Hopefully displaced waterfront renters will consider renting in other Jersey City neighborhoods.

I think simply repaving the road would suffice as that is the main complaint I read over and over again. Why does there need to be a "street-scape" nothing on CC to benefit that much anyway.

I think the "street-scaping" of Newark was a bit over-hyped and miss the big trees that were taken down and replaced with "bushes" like another commenter mentioned.

I appreciate CC's initial post. We should all be encouraging our neighbors to be more aware of their surroundings, not less so. If she posted about how she was walking home listening to her ipod when someone snatched her purse, you would be all over her. Instead she may have avoided a serious situation by being vigilant, so instead some accuse her of being dramatic.

Considering the incredulous responses posted here, I'm not shocked that anyone would hesitate getting our fine police department involved in this situation. Who wants to be the butt of the joke after feeling they were in danger?

Creative, don't take anything these morons say to heart.

I'm thinking these were homeless guys. Punk kids don't go around harvesting copper/metal pipe, which have to be carted to metal recycling centers for cash. Too time consuming. Also just about any other burgler would go for electronics - for example taking the actual video monitor as opposed to the wire.

This was the bungled handy work of hungry (hotdog eating), unemployable (metal scavanging), somewhat disturbed (classroom trashing) vagrants.

I liked the gardens in Ham Park while they lasted. They really added something nice that my family and I felt the park sorely needed. I don't think new pavers or amenities are going to negate the need for shrubbery and seasonal color.
There's a high probability the playground equipment and fountain are eventually gonna get trashed or become neglected someday, too. Does that mean they shouldn't be installed either? At a minimum, a park this size should have space for flower beds in all four corners.

My mother decided to remove it and replace it with a driveway. I warned her that I saw something in the journal that the city was no longer giving out parking permits for driveways or something along those lines but she went ahead and did it anyway .....

But there's a significant difference.

Healy is using his (contributed) millions to campaign to get re-elected. Hyman is using his (Flintkote) millions to coorce the city into another bad land deal. Now, where Healy got his contributions from and who he owes is unclear but one thing is certain, it ain't Hyman. It's likely that Hyman offered his money to Healy. Either Healy straight out wouldn't accept it or wouldn't guarantee a deal if he did. What does that say about Jerry? As much as it pains to me to admit, Healy looks like the hero here -- at least as far as the Embankment goes.

So now Hyman is using his own money to try to get "anyone else besides Healy" in office. Presumeably someone, anyone else whose administration will be more receptive to threats and bribes. Maybe if Hyman was up front in his message, instead of hiding behind the paper thin pretense that he gives a sh*t about a hospital in Ward A or busing in Ward F, then MAYBE he could avoid looking like a condescending, racist ass. But as it is, he's coming off like the total douche he is.

so here's how stuff leading to this played out in my head....

hyman: Hello, Jerry Healy. It's me, Steve Hyman.
healy: Hello, Steve. What's up, dawg?
hyman: I want the embankment.
healy: No.
hyman: I have $150,000 to spend.
healy: No thanks, I'm lousy with dinero.
hyman: I'm gonna tell all my african american peeps to vote for anyone but you.
healy: Bring it, playa.
hyman: K

is this assumption flawed?

I'm also very interested in hearing from city council candidates -- both at-large and in all wards, about this issue.

I've attended a few council sessions in support of the embankment group. More often than not, they were met with disdain and impatience from members of the city council.

It would be great to elect reps that had the balls to see this thing to the end.

Roadway shut? Not that I saw. Rocks raining down? Hardly. Like I posted, I was there yesterday afternoon.
I was sorta expecting to see some sort of commotion. Maybe a boulder teetering on the edge of a precipice like in a Roadrunner cartoon. Or chunks of rocks crashing onto Erie from 50 feet above. Other than the excitement of a bit of roped off sidewalk and yellow tape flapping in the breeze, there was bubkis. Jeez, talk about the sky falling...
