When Americans speak of China, I think we refer to mainland China.

Did you notice the signs over the checkout counters telling the clerks to smile and make eye contact? Mine didn't, but the woman at the soup counter totally did. I think it's hard culturally, I've rarely seen Asian customer service that did that, even when you're such regular somewhere that they know your order. The "customer experience" seems just not to be a thing.

You mean Chinese culture not Asian culture, right?

Perhaps I was overbroad. I wasn't prepared to be specific, but the counter example of Japanese service is true. Anybody remember the Chinese takeout on the SE corner of Jersey & Newark? The couple that ran it would yell at each other all day, never caring that the customers eating in might not consider it pleasant. Yes, most service in Chinese establishments except for the better restaurants is not engaging. Except for King Szechuan. I think one of the girls there has a crush on me.

I wonder if its opening will help clear up some of the nightmare traffic congestion around the Hudson Mall (rt 440). The Asian Market seems to always have a crowd.

I don't feel bad for them. Different customer bases. Something tells me most of the customers of the "small fish store on Jersey" woudn't be caught dead buying their fish in a supermarket, let alone an Asian one. I can't picture them standing in line sandwiched between loud Chinese grandmothers buying huge bags of fish heads - or even knowing what to do with a bag of fish heads.

Try traveling to Japan and then tell someone, "The 'customer experience' seems just not to be a thing" in Asian culture. Their customer service is the best in the world.

I went this morning when the place was uncrowded. I normally order groceries online - when Pathmark closed, I only missed the convenience of having a place to buy essentials when in a pinch. I am also not very familiar with Asian groceries.

Having said that, I was totally blown away by the store! What a welcome addition. I never heard of many of the items much less knew they existed, but between the fresh food sections and the produce section, I'm sold. I just hope that the wonderful customer service doesn't fade with time. What a refreshing change from Pathmark.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, perhaps the "small fish store on Jersey" should adjust their prices to remain competitive. As it is, that place is ridiculously expensive. It's hard to feel much sympathy for businesses that seem to try and operate in an alternate reality where market forces don't exist: know your market, know your customers, and act accordingly.

The bakery looks fairly decent in terms of selection: the typical breads, pastries and cakes that you would find in any Asian bakery. I did pick up a mocha swiss roll (the swiss rolls were one of their grand opening specials) and it was good. The line at the bakery was too long over the weekend, or I would have gotten a little mango mousse pastry from the case. I am curious to see how it stacks up to Fay Da in Chinatown. To me, Fay Da is the gold standard of Chinese bakeries.

It might have been $3/lb, but was still very cheap. It was frozen and wrapped in one of the coolers, not on the fish counter itself.

The chicken hearts I'm sure of because I bought like a pound and a half, roasted them up, and sat on the couch with a bowl of them like popcorn sharing them with my dog.

This place will do well due its strategic location- close to downtown JC and easily reachable within walking distance No more driving to ny china town.Savings inNY tolls and parking makes this a game changer for me. Prefer to go when its not crowded, before 9.00pm. it is really a welcome change for us who love to cook asian food.

I'm the same. I stopped by Sunday evening around 7:00 and the place was busy but not crowded. At checkout there were two people in front of me on line.

Will definitely go back to try the ramen bar and scoop up some sweets. This place may save me a few trips to Mitsuwa.

$2.50/lb octopus, $1.99/lb chicken hearts, a staggering array of frozen dumplings, and a dim sum bar? Be still my heart, this place rocks.

Moreover, when I went to ShopRite on Saturday to grab a bottle of wine, the grocery checkout lines were manageable, which is very rare for a Saturday afternoon, hopefully some of the excess capacity is making the drive over to 99 Ranch.

Popped in there Saturday after the Earth Day festival. What a terrific place, reminds me of a Chinese Whole Foods / Chinatown West. Pressed for time but gave it the once over and was impressed. Picked up some fresh non-Asian fruits and vegetables but taking a gander as I roamed about.

Holy shit, a mini food court!!! I'm gonna be there all the time even though it's not cheap. Had roast pork wonton noodle soup for the 1st time since leaving Tribeca where I could walk to Chinatown. That shop needs to get better soy sauce packets and have chili oil, rather than the shit takeout stuff they provide. The ramen shop does much better.
