I don't think it is so much that people love/hate Taqueria. They just love to dish smack on this thread.

Has anyone noticed the tacos have gotten smaller?? Wonder if they thought, after being closed for six months, their customers wouldn't notice.
Still delicious however.

Not for nothing, I have no idea why a dark hole in the wall with average food at best, gets so much love on this site.
Taqueria is mediocre, not so good, but not terrible either. Stop buggin people, and by the way, there are better options downtown. I'm not going to get everyone up in arms and throw names around, but they exist...

Yesterday (Tues) when I passed by, I saw a sign that said they would be closed on Wed 4/24. They aren't normally closed on Wednesdays but they must have had a reason for today (I didn't stop to read more).

I arrived at Taqueria tonight at 9 pm and they were closed, gate down and everything. Do they always close so early during the week? What are their hours?

I've been there two times since reopening. Once we were seated immediately at the only two remaining seats (on a very busy Thursday night) right in front of the TV at the counter thingy. This past Saturday we had to wait about 5 minutes for them to clear a table. But I'm sure there are times with much longer waits. I'd imagine whatever they tell you the wait is, it's probably more or less accurate. And sometimes the line by the door is the line for take out, not for a table, so just make sure to ask people what they are waiting for and get on the correct line.

How long does it take to get served there? The times I've gone there has always been someone standing in the doorway for lack of room, so I've given it a miss. Does that line move quickly? Just wondering if I'll suck it up one day and wait.

They were for most of their existence but had opened up on Mondays for at least several months before the Sandy closure. I guess they reverted back. Are they doing weekday lunch service yet? Tried calling but keep getting the machine.

Question . . . are they now closed on Mondays? Stopped by last night and was sadly disappointed as they were closed.

Tommy,
Having to wait on line for your food, and people being antsy about sitting down, that no longer exists. You go right to the table. Unless you mean paying a tip, or having to leave after getting your tab as being less relaxing. Poncho

It's odd. Reading that would make me think the same thing but it remains as casual and wonderful as ever. Waiter service sounds too formal-- it's more like someone roves the floor taking orders/dropping checks. I doubt they'd need more than two people doing it during a packed dinner service. Sweet Jesus the margaritas are wonderful. And the new flank steak taco is amazing. Life is worth living again.

Can you explain how the atmosphere is more relaxed? I hear it now has waiter service and has a "fancier" look, both of which I would think would give it a less relaxed feeling.

We ate at Taqueria last night and I must say that the service was 1000 times (*approx.) better than before the storm. And the food was just as good as before. The line was mostly for take away orders - we came right in and sat down.

Do you mean "Tres Chilitos?" "Tres Cholitos" would have a whole different, pretty derogatory, meaning. Hope they didn't call it that.

Thanks for the recommendation. I tried them today (not the pumpkin flower but the spicy pork) and they were quite good. I'm a fan of Taqueria, but Tres Cholitos' tacos were definitely much less greasy. Does anyone know how to replicate the hot sauce at Taqueria? If I could do that, I'd just make my own dang tacos. I went to Orale last week and it was on par with Taqueria. Pricier but better service/ambience/drinks etc. Simililar to Taqueria with all small plates but again, more upscale and trendy. I loved Taqueria but it's a night and day experience in regards to service and ambience. I personally thought the food was better at Orale and they are a lot more customer-friendly. Just my two cents! I definitely plan on visiting Taqueria once the reopening crowd dies down but I definitely see myself chosing Orale over them in the future. The entire time we were eating there we kept saying how this was EXACTLY the kind of Mexican place Jersey City has needed.

Bounty - Have to disagree with you. My wife and I would honestly say the tacos there are on the top 3 list of the best things we've ever eaten.
If you think there are better mexican options in the area (or even NYC), please let me know, I'd love to try them!

The wait was long today, and the kitchen was very slow to the point our tacos were cold when they finally arrived, but I'll give them the benefit of a doubt, considering they've been closed a while, were swamped, and have a new system going.
Still, apart from all the waiting, the new suadero (flank) taco and the buche (tripe) were pretty awesome, and the others were just as good as I remember.

I visited Taqueria a couple of times because they say if the first time a restaurant is bad, maybe they're having a bad day. Well, the second time was as bad as the first. I really wanted to like it but their crappy cactus tacos can't make up for slow service and a so-so atmosphere. Los Tres Cholitos on Restaurant Row in the Heights has the most amazing pumpkin flower tacos. I would go there over Taqueria any day.

Apologies in advance for resembling a 'troll' (just read about the definition of this term in a recent New York Mag article.. intriguing..) but this is my honest opinion.
I noticed a crowd of people outside this place and couldn't help but wonder why people continue to go here. The food is mediocre. Perhaps 7 years ago when there were no other Mexican Joints downtown, I guess it was okay, but there are a handful of better options these days. The only reason people think the food tastes good is because they literally cook everything in a tub of lard.
