Where are they and what is taking so long?

I mean....I enjoy the adrenaline rush an all, but it has become somewhat of a highway.

Anyone have any info?

Thank the Lordy they finally paved it. Smooth as silk...80% quieter now. Well worth dealing with all the jack hammers.

Hopefully next thing on the agenda is speed traps and fines for honking horns.

Truth. Why on earth do the ped signals not change automatically? I think the City should require automobiles to roll down their window and press a button (and then wait a cycle or two) to get a green light.

Anyway, pedestrians and cyclists, BE CAREFUL out there. Traffic is moving much faster along CCD now. Adjust your timing when crossing accordingly. I've had to scramble across a couple of times already.

Form the looks of it they finished repaving the road at least from Jersey ave towards the high school.. I didn?t go onto Grove so I can?t tell if the section from there towards exchange is done.

It really is a fantastic idea, isn't it?

While the widening project might be intended to increase capacity to the waterfront, anyone who is familiar with the intersection of CCD and Marin knows that it will only worsen the gridlock at that intersection. Is the gridlock there from tunnel backup? Seems to clear out considerably once it spreads to 4 lanes near shop rite. Maybe increase the capacity of that stretch of Marin while we're at it?

Anyway, I regularly cross both CCD and Marin at that intersection (walking), and sometimes it's downright terrifying as a pedestrian. I often deliberately take another route to avoid that intersection.

I agree. I think it had something to do with using the money before a certain time so it didn't expire. It also seems like they were planning on doing it on the sly and then someone noticed it didn't actually have final approval and started to push back.

I first learned about it and emailed councilman Fulop about after someone I know had asked about getting bike lane stripes on Columbus and was told that the new configuration wouldn't have room for bike lanes. That was back in July of 2009. Fulop didn't have all the answers and directed me to Chuck Lee in the planning department who took his sweet ass time responding until I followed up with Fulop several weeks later. Its interesting to note that while the city did physically widen Columbus by removing bulb outs and intend to widen the total number of travel lanes to six from four, Lee insisted several times it was NOT an expansion project:

"The CCD project is not an expansion project. It is a streetscape project to revitalize the existing condition,"

To me, the insistance that the project is solely a streetscape improvement project and not an expansion when it clearly is a physical expansion of the street, suggests there is probably something shady happening. While I'm not too familiar with state DOT requirements for roadway expansions, usually there are studies that are required to be completed and filed with the state. I suspect this step might have been... overlooked.

The whole process of repaving Columbus was suppose to happen as early as 2008 I believe. However, because some city officials wanted the expansion project to go through, they first had to remove the bulb outs -- which delayed the simple repaving until now.

Four lane road with a tree-lined median with parking meters (Mon-Sat 9 AM to 6 PM) on one or both sides.

The new traffic pattern is not yet approved. The council still has to vote on going to 6 lanes and it is not a done deal. I'm supposed to be notified of when it gets scheduled, I'll see if I can get the date and post it.

There will be a some outreach by groups I know of trying to get people to go and be heard by the council.

A meadian that runs from the current one down by the high school down to grove would be really nice. Mu guess is it would end up in disrepair and full of trash anyway.

It's awful. The road is SO wide, how could they NOT consider putting in a median with nice trees and plants? That would be somewhat of a consolation to pedestrians for giving the road more traffic lanes. And like T-bird said, it would create a more attractive entrance to JC from the Turnpike...the current entrance looks like you're entering a third world city.

The project doesn't make a ton of sense to me ... doesn't Columbus get narrow down towards the waterfront anyway?

And Grand Street is another one. It's very difficult to cross there.

I understand that JC is trying to continue to build a good rapport with corporations, and to to become a more attractive place for corporate real estate. I get it. But it's the missed opportunities, like the lack of an aesthetically pleasing median on Columbus (which frankly would not add a ton of money to the project), that are pissing off actual residents of JC.

Has the city - or anyone - considered just how much this 6-lane highway will destroy downtown? (don't let the stoplights fool you, this will be an autobahn.)

Faced with the advanced level of Frogger that Columbus will become, I see people on either side re-thinking their dining, shopping and strolling habits.

I love Wonder Bagel, but I won't risk my life for it.

On the other hand, a 4-lane road with a tree-lined median would be a big step towards making downtown a more cohesive community.

This is sort of off-topic, but does anyone know what the white building with the green door on Columbus between Jersey and Grove is going to be? Looks like it has a garden in the back and a lot of renovations have been going on for the past few months.

The building right near the laundromat? That is the back of the new k9dergarten dog-care.

That makes sense.

What about all of the shuttles that come from Condo communities like Beacon, etc? Those always try to stop right there between grove and marin.

I believe the plan is to move the taxi stand to Grove street and eliminate the metered parking on Grove because businesses in the area don't need more parking for customers.

It's sad when the road surface is already 100x better to drive on by just being milled. If they never complete it... it would still be a big improvement...

Are they still going to have the taxi line and bus stops on the block between Grove and Marin? I hate driving through there during rush hour. If they keep it at least it will slow down traffic so people don't speed past grove at 70mph! ;)

well i wouldnt be attempting to skateboard on this street during rush hour. walking is dangerous enough during those times. it's not crazy on columbus in the evenings and at night or like a sunday afternoon. and i guess im more psyched about skating across columbus. instead of stopping cause the road is destroyed.

I noticed the eastbound lanes were milled, and should be paved soon. Great news! Did anyone else notice that it's actually a much nicer drive AFTER being milled?
