Perhaps I misread...However, I found the post stating that the forum titled "Not for Jersey City" is the place for posts regarding the Heights and JSQ areas. That would be strange indeed, since neither area has seceded from Jersey City (although I know both areas feel so neglected by the politicians, perhaps they might as well
Anyway, as someone who grew up in the Heights and knew JSQ when it was populated with high end stores, theaters and restaurants, and was a destination in its own right instead of a means to an end, most of my selections will be in these areas. Kiki's (Downtown)- my lone downtown selection. I loved this place and was sad to find out it had gone. Tippi's (Heights): That giant, tacky ice cream coneheaded guy alone made it worth the trip but there was a lot of local color inside. I spend most of my life around that area and Tippy's (along with Standard Tile) were great landmarks to use when directing out of towners to my home. The Plankboard Inn (Heights): Best salad bar EVER. Hands down. Wonderful Happy Hour. And who could forget those all the food you could eat and all the champagne you could quaff brunches? The Summit House (Journal Square): First restaurant (to my knowlege) opened in ths landmark 1700 building behind the JSQ PATH Building. Very creative dishes. Brunches almost on a par with The Plankboard. (The restaurant now in this location, Blue Ribbon, is boring.) The Canton (JSQ) Old-fashioned, kitschy Chinese Restaurant - elegantly garish decor, surly waiters, umbrella drinks and good food. Sir Robin's (Journal Square): Pub fondly remembered for stuffed mushrooms, incredibly filling and cheesy onion soup and generous Irish Coffee, Liss' on Journal Square (For their ice cream sundaes - named after each theatre) and Meyers (Central Avenue) for anything with sugar.....A Japanese Restaurant on Journal Square on Sip Avenue (can't remember the name).......You had to take your shoes off before entering and sat on the floor.... Only knew the Jules on Franklin Street in the Heghts. Even though my uncle worked there, I found the food blah.

Actually...after I wrote my post a few weeks back I decided to go back to Hard Grove for takeout (I still dream of their Lemon Salsa Chicken!!!) and noticed that Celia still does hang on the wall...above where the window into the kitchen was. I must say, the Lemon Salsa chicken was as heavenly as ever, portion size was the same and they've added a little decoration to the dish with a red pepper slice and a long plantain chip garnish.
Still tasty!! I forgot to notice if the catfish fritters were still on the menu, but I will be going back for more

I was there that first week in March '95 when Dominic and his wife, Mercedes, opened. It's sad to see the travesty of the place today and those that missed it when Dominic owned it, missed one of the most fun places in JC with all it's kitsch, Easter animals, Statue of Liberty statue and Celia Cruz smiling from the walls midst faux palms. Dominic did a great job of promoting the Hard Grove and it felt like a family-owned place, like La Conquita does. The food was never great, just good, reasonable and hearty.

let's see how many i can come up with:
- Grandma's Pancake house, which is now IHOP on 440; my classmate's family owned it so maybe i was biased - when i was a kid, there was a pharmacy in journal square named Liss, and the cafeteria there was pretty good - plankboard inn can i include fast food places: - roy rogers on 440; hell, all roy rogers - Gino's/KFC on west side ave - Church's fried chicken on summit ave and sip - Blimpie base in journal square (the original location with a balcony)

I miss Pronto Cena also. When they were "on," Pronto Cena did some of the best vodka penne I've ever eaten. The wine list had its highlights too...
But ... there always seemed to be problems. I remember calling up one night and the woman on the end of the phone seemed unwilling to take a reservation because it was the weekend! And there was a blonde waitress there who always seemed to have a black eye, like she had a "bad" boyfriend. I had some great times at Pronto Cena. Took a couple of girlfriends there...so I am biased... Was sad when I called up to book a table and found it had gone. The only restaurant in Paulsu Hook that somehow failed to make money....

I'll chime in with another vote for Cosimo's.
La Primavera-- always empty and all the cats used for deliveries cars dealer plates. Thought that was odd but they had great brick-oven pizza. I'll try Ox one of these days...

For our family, 23 years in JC (out of Manhattan), the place was Kiki?s on Second St.
It?s taken 20 years to match the quality, price, service, and atmosphere of this restaurant. They got caught up in the economics of the ?87 reval, tried to adjust by adding a liquor license and music, and wound up losing their original customers with not enough support from the change? We miss them, though we do finally have alternatives

YES! The animals on Easter. Dominic Santana did some great things---I saw him at Hard Grove just the other day as I walked by. Does he still have a hand in the operation? Is he still owner? And most importantly...does LISA still work there?!? And to hear that they took down Celia Cruz painting is upsetting. Now it's just so generic in there. They could have made kitschy Cuban work for the upscale if they wanted to.

Yeah, I even miss that teeny tiny nasty bathroom too. I especially miss going there on Easter Sunday when they had the grass and all the farm animals. Or the Christmas tree with the misfit toys hanging all over.
The last remnant of the old hard grove was the painting of Celia Cruz, and they even took that down. My kids were really saddened by that. Nothing gold can stay.

The "old" Hard Grove...does anyone remember going in there late on any given night and there was mist pouring from smoke machines, tables were pushed aside, lights were flashing and the music (sometimes just "hot 97" radio) was LOUD?
This was back when there was a big controversy about allowing dance b/c it did not have a "Club" license, etc. 1999? I miss that...even their old stinky, crappy bathroom.

With the cost of gas and general living expenses increasing, we will be missing a lot more restuarants as they slowly close due to poor patronage.

Many people seconded this post, so I wanted to offer this update. I was in the mall Saturday (for Batman, naturally), and saw that Hale and Hearty Soups is now on the food court. For anyone who knows how fantastic their soups are, this is great news. Sure, it's a lunch spot, not a dinner spot, but it's now the best food in the mall by far and a great addition to the downtown area.
