Looks like Wurstbar is doing their soft opening right now and will probably be open this weekend.
Pretty solid couple weeks with Pet Shop, Cellar 335 and now this place opening up.

yowza wurst bar! there's a bar near my hometown of ann arbor called the wurst bar and i used to dream of franchising it out here cause i thought it would do well in jc. someone beat me to it (not franchised obviously, but still a similar idea).
http://wurstbarypsi.com/ i hope they do well! too bad they won't have michigan beer though.

The old Sushi Tango space is being transformed into a place called Wurstbar: http://www.wurstbarjc.com/

For what it's worth, Stella's has a passable breakfast sandwich now.
Haven't tried the coffee, but the TEC was serviceable. Probably the winner for combination of good/fast/cheap in relative proximity to Grove St. Path.

A breakfast spot (please no more brunch) would be great right across from Wonder Bagel, siphon off some of the traffic. It's just hard to get people to come in at 5am I guess.

Sushi Tango appears to be becoming a rather large, nice looking bar. I walked by today and the door was open, it's got a long way to go but it looks nice. The other day, somebody was asking a contractor what's going in and he said "a bar".
I hope it's an interesting concept. I had heard a while ago that it was going to be some sort of beer hall, then somebody said a tapas bar, and Jersey City Eats reported that it was remaining as Sushi Tango.

And before that, it was Moochie's.

Last night I was doing some laundry at Carolina's and there were a bunch of dudes scouting out the Sushi Tango space and discussing things, presumably about how to renovate the space.
I have never been in Sushi Tango, but it was empty and lit up so I got to see the size of the place. Bigger than I thought. Was this the place that years ago was Downtown Eddie's? I think that closed down just before I moved here.

Thanks, very useful for us nigiri and sashimi snobs....;). Hold the maki. From my personal favorites Sasabune is missing from this list. At $150 pp a lot of these places are once-a-year affairs, if that. From a bang for the buck perspective Roy's mentioned by Frank_M looks very appealing. Nothing wrong with super-fresh cuts of salmon, yellowtail or tuna at a great price. Toro at $14 per piece at a fancy place is awesome, but only on a business T&E account, at least for me.

I'm a glutton for maki drowning in spicy mayo like anyone else, and one of Honshu's signature appetizers in particular does not disappoint in that regard, but I don't understand why superlatives are so often used to describe their sushi, which presumably includes nigiri. Despite many attempts over the years, I've consistently found Honshu's nigiri no better than the local competition. There's plenty of delicious maki in Jersey City, including Honshu's, but for simpler preparations where the fish is everything, flavor and texture almost always fall short of expense and expectation.
Meanwhile for lunch today, I had some of the nicest tuna, yellowtail, and salmon nigiri at an old, funky smelling, hole-in-the-wall fish store at 62nd and 1st Ave (Roy's Fish and Sushi, a.k.a. Pom's). Great fish is out there, but not every restaurant is interested in buying it.

This was about a year ago. In all honesty, it was my fault, I did the math wrong in my head. I think I only offered him something like $2 and some change. The guy called me out like a just stole his lollipop, which in hindsight I don't mind as much because $2 is a real stingy tip.

The woman working at Big Chef across the street today said there is a new owner of the Sushi Tango building and they are aiming for a November opening (good luck).

But you are such "good" friends with Jason. Lmfao. Not knocking Honshu at all, that place is the BEST. But you getting all high and mighty and NOT knowing they moved and now have liquor is HILARIOUS, tell Jason I said hi.

About the unsavory delivery experience, was it a delivery by Honshu? Or, from a delivery service like seamless or grubhub? If the former, I hope you called and reported this to Honshu. From my many visits, I have gotten to know the manager, and all of their wait staff, and I'm sure Jason (the manager) would not be happy to know this happened.

Yeah, apparently this is true. I didn't realize that was the case until I saw on their website some unclear reference to "expanded beverage service". Oh well, as long as they keep putting out a top notch product, I will continue to patronize them.

Oh, yeah. I suppose the stage IS cheesy. But, then again, it doesn't really detract from the rest of place. PLENTY of beer taps, good all around selection, great bartenders (most of the girls working there have been at it for years, and they do remember their customers well) and the food is decent enough (I hardly ever eat there, but have tried a few things). The stage is cool for when they do have a live act, but I hardly go there for that. I am there to drink a beer, socialize and sometimes to sit by myself while reading a book.
