Selling fresh fish is an incredibly high risk. Especially in jersey city. Even in downtown.

Why was this Carrino Provisions thread combined/consolidated under retitled Talde thread? Yes, next to each other and same owners, but different entities!

Yeah what's the deal with the cantina?
It is true that it doesn't fill any missing gaps but misses a great opportunity to sell fresh fish.

Did you go down to the cantina? Cantina means basement in Italian, as well as pub, so I'm wondering if it is just an affectation like 'la toilette' at Bistro. I went back after my first visit. It remains nice to have in the neighborhood for me, but fills no important gaps. I'm really find the design of the place hum drum; modern Italian design would have made a great background for the products of modern Italian cuisine.

Espresso is usually served in "dinky" cups, at least size wise. What exactly rubbed you the wrong way on the cans ?

I was also kind of unimpressed. The restaurant seems like a good upscale addition (that i'll probably rarely go to). They have a pasta counter - there's a pasta shop a couple blocks away with similar prices. They have an upscale butcher counter - there's an upscale butcher a few blocks down the road. They have a pastry counter - there's two (soon to be three) a few blocks away.
There's no fishmonger for miles around and they don't have one. What a missed opportunity. The prices aren't really impressive, and the variety is small. I'll continue going to Rafetto's and Moloney's when I want something like this.

I don't like the coffe bar. $2.00 for
a dinky cup and it's Iily. And the fact that they have these ginormous Iily cans for product placement on the shelves rubs me the wrong way. I'll get coffe next door at Bar 9. The rest of the place didn't bowl me over either. But, that's my opinion.

I misunderstood this thread and went to meet a friend at Talde last night and it's not open yet. Their restaurant in the back of the market is open with a Cantina in the basement but not Talde's.

Re: size of chicken (at least the pre-made rotisserie). I wasn't referring to those 4.5 pound mass market chickens which I never buy-- the D'Artagnan organic free-range chickens I buy are smaller (2.5-3 pounds max) but still at least a pound bigger than the tiny chickens sold at Corrino. I can't judge the flavor of their chicken because IMO they weren't cooked properly-- maybe I just got a poorly cooked batch and they aren't up to speed yet.
I would absolutely buy their raw meat products though and cook them myself-- their chicken breasts seemed like a great deal for organic/humanely raised. I didn't think 10.99/lb for organic ground beef was that far out of line with Whole Foods (8.99) and will definitely buy it there for the convenience. Re: receipts-- I'm sure they don't intend for customers for the market to tip, but I agree I still don't like seeing the suggestion. Juicewell used to do this too-- and they had no excuse because they didn't even have a restaurant portion-- they expected a tip for me reaching into their cooler and buying a pre-made drink.

Many receipt machines have that as part of their output. I think because of the restaurants in the space, they're all on the same system. I've seen that in many places; I do not believe they were expecting a tip.

We picked up a couple of chicken cutlets last night and cooked them up at home. They were amazing! They have a sign about how well these chickens are treated and it seems to make a big difference. The size of the chickens seems smaller than the mutant-mass-raised chickens at the grocery store, but definitely worth it.
I was, however, put off by the receipt. When I got home, I saw that they had 'suggested tip' at the bottom. Are they expecting me to tip for food that I am going to take home and cook?

Overall it looks great and the quality and prices for the butcher shop items seem fair. Desserts were excellent, coffee good. Bread looks great but haven't tried yet.
But I picked up a rotisserie chicken (17.99 for maybe a 1.5-2 pound chicken, it was the smallest rotisserie chicken I've ever seen) and was disappointed. It was dry (which I personally don't mind) but also bland and the skin was a little greasy, not crisp. They sell it lukewarm, not hot, so you'll need to heat it up back home. I usually make my own roast chicken (d'artagnan, which isn't cheap, I usually spend $15-18 for an uncooked chicken, probably 2.5-3 pounds) and my chicken blows this one away in flavor, texture and portion-- and I don't do anything fancy with my chicken.

Dinner at Osteria in the back. The agnolotti cacciatore were stellar. I can't believe I wiped the plate with the rosemary bread.

I went in the other day, and a guy at the counter (one of the owners, I think) said they plan to have "twice as many counters" fairly soon. So I think what you see now is more of a soft open.

Unless of course restaurant management or the owners peruse this thread to take stock of the response they get, like many other restaurant owners in the area do. But I agree, everyone who would like them to carry fresh seafood should inquire about it at the location. I certainly will.

So everyone get in there and tell everyone you can at the counters that you want to see fresh fish! I was in there over the weekend and was talking about it to a few people. If they hear it enough and feel that the neighborhood will support it we'll have a lot better chance of making it happen. Posting it on this forum isn't going to help one bit.

I'll chime in with a 3rd on that, Tommyc and Fraulein. I'm willing to pay the $$$ for fresh, wild caught fish. I bet it would be a hit.

I'm with ya Fraulein, if anybody in the immediate Grove Street area carried fresh, wild caught seafood, I would be there several times per week.

I really wanted to love this place, but I have to admit, I was disappointed. I'm excited to try the restaurants, but as far as the market goes, I was underwhelmed with the amount of options. It's pretty limited. I do hope this is only part of their final inventory. If not, I see myself going there maybe once-month, if that. Only so much olive oil, fig spread and candles I need.
The only real benefit and gap this fills for me/my family is the quality meat. But again, I'm not eating steak every week. It's stunning how no one catches on to the seafood need... I would be there every other night if they had that...

Went on Saturday. The Cannoli were mehhh. The shell tasted like the outside of mexican fried ice cream, and the filling tasted like it was flavored with lime. Was expecting traditional cannoli, being that, you know, it's an Italian place. The meat and dessert displays were half empty and didn't look appetizing. Only thing on display was some stale looking Pannetone bread pudding and some other dessert. The restaurant looked great. I hope the market area improves though. It was underwhelming.

The Carino's did a great job on the building and the restaurants. What a great addition to downtown and the city.

We went Saturday and sat at the bar in the back; enjoyed a couple cheeses and a three of the meats. It was delicious.
We also really liked the Jersey City Tea and the BBQ Negroni cocktails

The space is really, really nice, especially the Osteria. I was hoping for a little more in terms of the "market" though. What was there looked great though.

Had lunch here the other day. Fantastic. Highly recommend the Lobster panini with fra diavlo butter and a BBQ negroni.
Bartender at Carrino said Talde should open up in a week or so.

Yesterday I grabbed some fresh spaghetti, ground pork, canned la valle san marzano tomatoes, a loaf of bread, and a half-dozen cannoli and a can of Illy coffee ... defrosted some ground beef, went classic spaghetti and my (if I do say so myself) legendary meatballs, invited over some neighbors and Sunday dinner was a huge hit. I'm tickled this place is in the 'hood, 'yall.
