The PATH just tweeted (and issued a press release) announcing that weekend service to WTC will restart on December 20.
Incredible... they are ahead of schedule! PANYNJ Press Release

Hey, does anybody have any difficulty using a credit card at the machines at Grove Street? It feels difficult to put my card into the scanner (almost like something is obstructing it) and it says, time and time again, that my card cannot be read (multiple cards, and this has been happening for a long time).

I think this is smart planning on the part of the PA. While it is not at all reasonable to expect traffic to increase 3.5 times to today's levels anytime soon, it is smart to plan for increased traffic (with all the new buildings coming online, you can rest assured a lot more people will be riding to WTC.) Also, consider, or keep in mind, that in 2015 the WTC station will be the only destination during part of the year, as the PA has already stated that the 33rd St line will incur closures as part of the Sandy repairs. Crap... that's two postings defending the PA in one day. Please excuse me while I go throw up.

I am not one to defend the PA, but your comment is off base. The PA already has committed to building another absurdly expensive station at Harrison. The new station was estimated to cost $150 millions back in 2008. IIRC, the latest estimates are $500 million. Even if they manage to come in at budget (which we all know will not be the case) it is a rather incredible sum for what is a mid-way station, in a sleepy town.

One of the other interesting things in that article was the mention of PATH being used as a freight rail line to deliver things to the WTC site. Wonder how many train delays were just due to that?

Oh, don't worry. I bet PATH is already working on this - secretly of course. I mean, look at how good a secret they kept on the weekend closure on the WTC line (surprised everyone the week before the actual closure). I bet they've been working on this for years, and just wanted to surprise us!
I mean, we are long overdue on some good news in regards to the PATH, right? Even statistically, they've f*cked up and screwed us so many times, we're bound for a round of good news, RIGHT????? Quote:

Buried in the NY Times article, near the end, is this gem:
Despite the cost overruns and delays, Mr. Foye, the Port Authority?s executive director, predicted the hub would be a ?world-class transit gateway? that would ?help transform Lower Manhattan into a thriving 24/7 neighborhood.? It is intended for as many as 160,000 PATH riders daily, nearly four times the number who ride to the World Trade Center site today. Um, how are those 160,000 riders going to fit into trains that are currently quite full at rush hour with a mere 46,000 riders?

I was referring to NYC, not JC. Much of it goes unreported due to intimidation and lack of meaningful redress. However, the fact that companies "willingly" choose to spend far more on labor costs by hiring union should tell you something. Here are some examples, both recent and not recent. The issues discussed in the New York Times article persist today. http://www.nytimes.com/1994/10/24/nyr ... wall-on-new-york-job.html http://laborunionreport.com/2013/12/2 ... lead-guilty-to-extortion/ http://www.nilrr.org/resources/violence-event-data-file/

Can you give an example of a JC project sabotaged for not using union workers, I'm curious. Union money is often part of a funding package, hence union workers.

They don't want bad PR or they don't want their project sabatoged? I've heard plenty of instances of this happening. Anyway the point is that the extreme difference in labor costs accounts for the total price difference. The article writer shouldn't be so shocked, especially for Dubai.

That is partially correct; PUBLIC projects are definitely union only. Private developers on private jobs are free to use open shop labor or union. Burj Khalifa is a private project built by a private firm with private funding. Same with BoA. Even though it is in NYC, they can chose to use non union labor however most large companies do not as they do not want bad PR.

NYC mandates union labor. Dubai uses slave labor. That's how their building is only the fifth most expensive while ours is #1.

isn't it time that governors should be accountable for the actions of their appointees? we hold our local mayors feet to the fire when their appointments falter, start treating the PA as part of your governor's performance.

Actually, this doesn't surprise me at all. The Port Authority is notorious for mismanaging time and money. They are absolutely clueless on how to get anything done. Typical "DMV Behavior".

My favorite part of this article was when David Steiner visited the Milwaukee Museum and said "OK Santiago, you can have your goddamn wings". Like a king granting a boon. Thanks, Steiner. Can I spend some of YOUR money now?
