This is terrible news. Sava was actually the first restaurant I visited upon moving to Jersey City. Great food and a great intro the the area.
I wish Jadwiga the very best in her battle with cancer.

The cats in the flyer photo are not the actual cats behind Sava's Deli. However, the colony she was feeding are all black and yes they have been neutered and eartipped in 2009 by the Neighborhood Feral Cat Initiative.

Oh damn that is awful, she is so nice. Food was great and you couldn't beat the prices. So sorry to hear this.
I'm lost on what to do for Polish food now - first Europa now this.

Very sad. I noticed she was always coughing, and I'm not sure if she smoked but her husband constantly did. Hope she is able to make a recovery.

I am glad you mentioned that. We are worried about them and are trying to find someone to care for and feed the cats. We cannot even get into the back of the buildings to see where the cats are now. Are you familiar with the area and stores there?

That makes me very sad. I've really enjoyed going in her restaurant over the years, and always loved talking with her.
I hope the cats will be okay.

Sad to report that the owner has cancer and closed the business.

Anyone have any idea what is going on with this place? It's been closed the past few days. I saw two guys walking out of it earlier this week locking up the gate but it was totally closed up. Looks like there is some random stuff collecting up just inside of the metal gate.

I don't have a Polish grandmother, but I still agree with the previous poster but one. If I had a Polish grandma, she would make and serve food like Sava. Too bad Tania's is gone but you still have Europa (if you want to cook yourself) or Sava (if you don't). Polish food rocks in winter.

I bought some stuffed cabbage last week and it was very good. The owner told me how much work it was to make the stuffed cabbage. Stuffed cabbage and guilt - just like grandmama.

Just had to give these guys a shout. Their food is delicious and basically a meal like my polish grandmother would make for about 10$.
The owner is super nice too

Yeah, she is very nice - but she had laryngitis the last time was I in there -- and that was a little off putting for her being the chef. I also always had the hardest time getting her to heat up a dozen pierogies - this was true here and at her old location - and yes even then never fresh boiled just zapped! I also once got a bone in a soup she swore was vegetarian. I wish her well - she is very nice.

I think they nuke the food after they cook it, or nuke it from the get go.

That's a real bummer... we would eat there every couple of mos, but admittedly we'd frequently forget it's there. As much as we love Polish food, it's not something we'd make be a weekly meal (or we wouldn't fit through the door).
Hopefully it's replaced with something other than a pizza place or Asian restaurant.

really sad, but I agree that it's not surprising. Can't believe they never got themselves a real sign or proper storefront.

The place is uninviting. Even if it's clean inside, the are perception is that it's dirty. The business has been there for 2 years now and they still have a ghetto banner as their signage. Food is good but it's not a place I'm going to take my family or friends to eat.

REALLY sad, but not surprising. As I've said before, I can't figure out how that place didn't succeed.

I've been living in JC for over a decade now and hadn't yet made it to Sava.
I went this past Friday and am so glad I did. I got the goulash, stuffed cabbage and periogies and everything was delicious and very affordable. Being of polish descent and having my grandmother cook for me, I can say that this food is every bit as good as I remember my grandmother's. I plan on making this place a regular in my take-out rotation.

> Yeah, it doesn't make sense that the place is never full
The Sava decor looks scruffy and uninviting, I think that sprucing the place up would help them get more business. Robin.

Incidentally, Sawa (the W is pronounced like a V) is a mythical syren that sang to a young fisherman named Wars along the Wisła river in Poland. The two got together and you got Warszawa (Warsaw.)
The syren is on the coat of arms of Warsaw:
