Please everyone, only tell people JC is anything like Brooklyn if you are talking to a good friend who is looking to move. Otherwise please tell strangers that there are constant muggings, a foot of trash on the streets, and all the women look and act just like Snookie. Otherwise we'll be flooded with trendies. It's already getting scary out there. It used to be that midwestern transplants would accept nothing less than living in NYC but now I know at least two who live in JC. THEY'RE COMING

I just tell people it's "mirror Brooklyn" -- bits of it look like different neighborhoods, but the river's on the other side.

Who cares?? This is not Brooklyn, nor should people think it is. If you want Brooklyn, live there. Why do people continually feel the need to force this comparison on any part of JC? Most of us live here because its unique, and not Brooklyn. And that's no slam against BK.

While there are certain parts of DTJC that may look like Brooklyn, DTJC has a totally different feel, which I feel is the distinguishing factor and certainly preferable to me. Whenever I am in Brooklyn, I feel so isolated and cut off from the rest of the world, because it is such a PIA to get out of Brooklyn and go anywhere (except Manhattan) with so much traffic. I like that in DTJC we can get out of town fairly quickly and without it being a huge hassle. I also feel like there is a different sense of community here. It also doesn't feel so crowded and claustrophobic. While I am well aware that there are many nice areas of Brooklyn, personally, I would never, ever live there.

I would classify it as all of downtown Brooklyn.
Paulus Hook and Brooklyn Heights feel exactly alike. Newark Street by grove all the way down to Little india definitely feels like Green Points main avenue. NewPort/ Exchang Place have a Metro feel and reminds me a bit of a Metro Tech/ Jay Street feel, however not exactly. Journal Square - right by the Path is exactly what Atlantic Avenue was like before the Barclays investment. Harimus Cove, Hamilton Park, and other areas with prewar row houses feel like Park Slope, accept a little bit more quiet and spaced out with nicer parks. By the actual power house - bay street has a dumbo vibe, however it did not catch on to the extent. JC happened to develop a bit slower opposed to Downtown brooklyn because the taxes are cheaper over all - abatement were more robust and general taxes are cheaper. Myself living in Brooklyn until i was in my early 30s made me choose JC because I was able to get more for my money in an area I liked.

We moved here from Williamsburg about 10 years ago -- and it has a lot in common with Williamsburg (but far less artists) -- it is just as close to Manhattan -- though who would not rather have a Bridge -- I still say that it would be great if there was a $2 loop bus with bike racks always running -- just in and out of the tunnel -- picking up and dropping off people by the Home Depot.

I78 is the edge of downtown and I wouldn't even consider it downtown. west most part of downtown is the village section

It reminds me the most of what Ft Greene and Clinton Hill felt like 10+ years ago with Newark Ave the equivalent of Myrtle. A mix of historic brownstone neighborhoods and vinyl/clapboard style rowhouses. A commercial thoroughfare that is a mix of businesses catering to the gentrifiers while still having the 99 cent stores, fried chicken spots, and dive bars. Grit interspersed with yupster spots.
On the far side of the area (Exchange Place/Waterfront) you have the highrises and CBD much like Downtown Brooklyn/Metrotech. DTJC has their square parks which are similar to Ft Greene park, albeit smaller. We have Columbus as our ugly thoroughfare and Ft Green/Clinton Hill have Atlantic Ave as theirs. They have the BQE overhead on the far side of the neighborhood and we have the 78. We have our suburban style big box stores, chain restaurants, and Newport mall and they have Atlantic Center and Fulton Mall.

A little bit of the old mixed in with the new. For that reason alone I find Williamsburg as interesting as the L.E.S but DTJC not so much.

yea i tell people who want me to describe JC to them that it's basically brooklyn. brownstones, mostly 4 or less story buildings except for one area, streets are quiet at night for the most part, some neighborhoods you definitely do not want to head to, etc.
specific neighborhood for DTJC? fort greene, probably. good mix of yuppie/hipster gentrification + parts of the old griminess + a bunch of families.

I think it goes block by block. Some blocks could pass for Park Slope, some blocks look a lot like Bushwick/Greenpoint (particularly north of Newark Ave west of Jersey Ave).

Problem is, east of Marin (excepting the PH Historic district) it's not like ANY part of Brooklyn, but most like Downtown. West, probably anything said will get an argument on some basis. Is it as fancy as core Park Slope? Probably not. Boerum or Cobble Hills or Ft Greene? Maybe most like.
So you might say DTJC is like if you took Downtown and a couple of those surrounding hoods and called it one neighborhood.

I am asked this question ALOT. Any input? I'm always at a loss for words when asked this question. I say this, mainly, because I feel like DTJC is just that, DTJC, a unique/special place not really comparable to any particular part of Brooklyn. Anyway, I'm curious to see what all you JCListers have to say. Plus, it would be easier to just have a quick, easy answer : )
