I was on the PATH near Christopher St when the "signal problem" went from bad to worse, we waited in the tunnel for 20mins or so and then we were told we would all be getting off at 9th St. After fighting my way up the stairs to 6th ave I caught a D train from 4th street which only made it one stop before the doors wouldn't close causing us to leave that train and board the M train. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I heard the first ten minute delay notification this morning I knew I should have jumped on that first or second WTC train that passed. By the time the line was suspended it was too late and the next few were much more packed. It's funny that when a line is suspended and we get reverted, the path doesn't lose any money, and the MTA makes extra $2.25 per person that they otherwise wouldn't have made that day.

Due to the earlier signal failure, PATH service is now operating subject to 20 minute delays on the JSQ-33rd St. line and the HOB-33rd St. line.

What's the deal with the signal failures? I remember a couple of years ago, they announced that they were replacing the entire signal system, so that the trains could actually go more than 10 MPH. Was that a load of BS, or have they actually started replacing the signal system?

Smoke was coming out of Christopher Street. I was at 9th Street, waiting for a JSQ train. There was a Hoboken train just sitting on the track. Then they shut the lights off to the train and made an announcement over the PA that there was too much smoke at Christopher Street, and it was supposedly bad enough that they were kicking us out of the 9th Street station.

So I hopped a cab to WTC. When I got there, I got on a JSQ train. After a minute of sitting, the doors close like we were ready to go. Then they open the doors again and tell us that this train was now out of service. Huh? They directed us to the train across the platform, which was shut down. They started it up and ran it. Weird.

There was a lot of smoke coming out of the tunnel. Probably garbage/debris caught fire.

What is a Way & Structures air problem?

This is the latest gem from the PATH alert system:
"Due to Way & Structures air problems, PATH service is operating subject to 15 minute delays on the JSQ-33rd St. line, HOB-33rd St. line and the HOB-WTC line. To unsubscribe, visit http://www.paalerts.com/alertunsubscribe.aspx"

WTF does it mean?

And... you're right. I got two alerts, and I misread the second one. (smacks self upside head...) Thank you...

I am curious about alternate forms of transport, though. Does anyone ever take the bus?

I only got an alert about JSQ-33 and HOB-33 being suspended. I think WTC is still working.

And... if this keeps up, what's the best bus into Manhattan from the Grove Street area?

The trains to WTC were running this morning. My office is on 7th Ave, so I took the 2/3 from there. Obviously, even more insanely crowded than usual. Added about 30 minutes to my commute (b/c the first 3 trains that came into the station were full).

On the ends of the car seats there's a small white sign that begs, with improper terminating punctuation, "WON'T YOU PLEASE SAVE THIS SEAT FOR THE ELDERLY OR DISABLED."

Then, inexplicably, below that message the sign surface is elongated by 30-40% to accommodate a centered circle.

What does the circle mean? WHAT DOES IT MEANNNNNN?!?!?!?!

I've been in JC for 23 years; the only time I remember the PATH being entirely shut down (other than 9/11) was not actually due to snow. It was the Halloween Nor'easter of 1991, which dumped so much wind-driven rain so quickly during the night that the underground stations were flooded, i.e. water in the track beds up to and over the platforms. I had spent the night in Hoboken and couldn't get back to JC for most of the day - PATH was flooded, the whole low-lying area between Hoboken and downtown JC by the A+P shopping center was flooded and cars couldn't pass, and the 14th St viaduct and Heights road were closed due to danger of the big stone retaining wall crumbling. As I recall though everything was back to semi-normal later that afternoon.

Ok so this morning, while I waited for a PATH to WTC, a 33rd Street train came in, and the conductor did the usual shpeal:

"Grove Street. This is a PATH to 33rd Street. Stand clear of the closing doors".

The one big difference, I couldn't help but notice that the female conductor (this was the older model trains so not automated voice) sounded EXACTLY like Maya Angelou.

Can anyone who gets on PATH to 33rd around 7:45 confirm that there is a Maya Angelou sounding conductor?

Saturday 1/15, 2PM.

Path train from 33rd to JSQ via Hoboken.

Train stops in tunnel between Christopher and Hoboken for 10-15 minutes.

No Announcement is made as to what is going on.

Conductor goes from front of train to back of train.
Conductor doesn't say anything as she passes through.

Train starts moving, BACKWARDS.
No Announcement as to what is going on.

More time passes.
Then there is finally an announcement.

"We are being held by dispatch. Thanks for your patience."

More time passes.

"This train will be travelling directly to Pavonia/Newport,
THEN to Hoboken."

"For those of you wishing to travel to Journal Square,
THERE WILL BE A TRAIN WAITING FOR YOU AT NEWPORT".

After a while the train starts moving, and finally reaches Newport.

THere is no train to JSQ waiting, or even visible when looking down the tunnel.

I cut my losses and walked home from there.

They shifted all their employees from "driving trains" to "making posters with cute kittens." Its a union thing.

My favorite thing about yesterday's sucky a.m. commute was that they kept making several announcements simultaneously. We were trying to figure out what was going on but the announcements about out of service elevators and to say something if you see something kept drowning out the relevant announcements.

Also, they kept saying the train was running with 10 minute delays. Well, I was on that platform (which was terrifyingly crowded) for a SOLID HOUR before I could squeeze onto any Manhattan-bound train! That's never happened to me before.

Delays do seem to be happening more frequently. I hope it's just a coincidence though.

Oy vey. There were still a lot of cops around at 9:30, but not like what you're describing, FG.

Thanks to all for the information.

I don't buy it. There were too many uniformed cops on the platform this morning at Grove Street when I got there. They were looking for someone in particular funneling people into the cars to get A GOOD LOOK.

Police are using phoney train service issues to do their dirty work and prevent citizen anxiety and I for one don't like it. There has got to be a better way to protect the path train than fake service issues.

The cop even came in my car right after me... rode up to 33rd St... but was called on his two way radio around 9th street to go to a forward car because of "suspicious person". Literally he took off like super quick. Everyone was like what is going on.

Thanks for doing you job PAPD. But I need to get to work quickly ok? That is why its RUSH hour.

FG

I'll tell you, that got kinda scary this morning - the platform got so crowded that people, including me, ended up standing like 2-3 inches, literally, from the edge. All it would have taken is a little bump from some idiot and it could have been a real tragedy, as someone (or multiples) fell onto the tracks.

By the way, did anyone notice their attempt at the PATH version of EZPass lanes, yesterday on the way home in WTC? It was the only time I've seen them - clearly, not a smart idea.

Bad luck, or is PATH cutting back on service for 2011?

HA! I like it a lot. PSA's were one of the main themes we had in that PATH community board meeting this past October. Kudos to them for actually listening to at least a little of what we had to say. Granted none of us had the idea for this particular gimmick, but I think its pretty amusing.

The PATH is launching a new PSA campaign:

The PATH to Courtesy

It looks like a joke, but apparently its on the official PATH Twitter where they have a whole bunch more:
