Can anyone confirm that the WTC line is running this weekend? Call me crazy, but I don't entirely trust PATHalerts....

I've been over there a lot lately. I smell it too. Worse: My friend's air filter has been showing the VOC light (volatile organic compounds) more often and at odd times. She says usually it comes on only when she's been running the oven, or at the end of the day during extremely hot summer days (when presumably nasty stuff in her building has been baking).

Does anyone know why? Is it the tree-roots-messing-with-building-foundations problem?

I don't think the farmers markets should be regulated or limited in terms of what they offer. The diversity of offerings reflect the many different things these farmers and businesses provide. I love the surprises. I also loved getting knives sharpened last year at Hamilton Park (not sure if that still goes on).

There will always be forces of competition for any type of business. These complainers should also not assume that the people spending money at the market would otherwise spend money with them.

This is, once again, insane. Does "indefinitely" mean a day, a week, a month?

That line in the CBS piece ? officials aren't sure if the problem is related to Sunday's fire ? is beyond rich.

Suspended indefinitely?!

!#*!*!*!???

The cross-honoring thing is B.S.

Tried to do this on the bus yesterday, and the driver had never heard of such a thing.

I've really enjoyed getting off the train and walking around this space. Seeing other JC residents hanging at the benches with their kids, and friends, and spouses feels really good. I love the little kids zooming around on their scooters (and reserve the right to change that view if one of them ever T-bones me or my gf).

A week or so ago I had to do some work when I got home... When I got off the train, I decided to sit at the bench and do it there instead.

Also, I think the benches are kinda cool.

Like devilsadvocate, I shopped or attempted to shop there about a dozen times in both incarnations. Probably more in the old incarnation, because those people at least carried seltzer consistently. In the newer incarnation, it's fair to say that I was able to make one purchase out of 10, and for the rest I'd have to go elsewhere for that onion or can of beans. Then I stopped going because it was enough out of my way to make the inability to make a simple purchase very irritating.

The little markets on Newark Ave are well stocked.

It sounds like you did support it. How many time did you shop there ?

I personally shopped or attempted to shop at the old and the new place something like a dozen times. Many times I bought only a few things or nothing and ended up going to another store afterward.

Uber may not be a car service, but I'll take its imitation over the real thing any day.

As others have said, the JC cabs are laughably, disgustingly decrepit; half the time you get crammed alongside other fares whether you like it or not; and riding in one feels like a Choose Your Own Adventure, death-wish edition.

Uber has been a game changer for us.

Our rent keeps going up, and we're not sure how much longer we can afford to stay in downtown JC.

But what about all those high rises being built? Will they wind up lowering rents?

Used it last night for the first time, coming home from the East Village to the Van Vorst area.

-used UberX
-the wait was 1 minute. Maybe less
-the car, a Camry, was immaculate
-the driver didn't know how to get to the Holland Tunnel. From Chrystie and Houston
-With the $20 promo code, the ride was $28.

Except for having to direct the driver to the Holland (and needing to pop in [*edit: ear buds] to "work" to get him to stop talking), this was a hassle-free and comfortable way to get home late at night. I will use it again.

This is great news. My girlfriend was on crutches a while back and had to rely on JC cabs for about two weeks.

Ahahahaha

Here's to cars that show up within 40 minutes of what they promise, for a reasonable price. Game changer indeed.

We were sort of expecting this, after the email they sent the other day (don't think this could be considered private, since they cr*pped everyone's email into the wide-open "to" field):

There has been some concern over the temporary use of the garage as a parking area for the neighborhood's newest Vietnamese restaurant, New Thanh Hoai. The restaurant has rented the Lefrak lot just to the north on Erie Street and has been awaiting the final approval before they can begin parking there. We expect to get the OK in the next few days and will be returning the garage to it's normal mode of operation. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and don't forget to grab a bite at New Thanh Hoai!

That whole "expect" and "next few days" thing.

+1 about the lack of communication. Send an email (using that little trick from the mid-90s called BCC). Post a sign. Say SOMETHING, before the internet hissy fit.

Wonder how many people actually drive there. Is it that much of a destination, and/or is that the restaurant's goal?

That said, this has been a fine way to alienate the neighborhood from the get-go. If that were my business, I'd fear the repercussions of cheesing off a hundred or two of my potential customers. It's a tough spot that does need the support of ppl who'd walk there.

I imagine quite a few people here rcvd an email from the Silverman people today about "the concern"... with everyone's email address out in open the "to" line. Insult to injury.

I agree, I hope the restaurant doesn't lose out - but I'd think they would understand our concerns and probably worry more that they'd lose the LOCALS, not the people driving and parking their. Nothing in that spot will succeed unless it wins over the neighborhood.

I agree 100 percent, with this chrisjc post and also the 8:52 post by PATH8R. We pay Silverman every month for a garage that has always been, at least in my three or so years, secured by a motorised gate. It would have been simple to email all of us and let us know what was happening, although my household would still have been angry. We would at least have had information and basic courtesy.

Who is Tommy, and why do we care that he's "very nice"? I do not care. My girlfriend does not care. We care that anyone can stroll into that garage now, day or night, and harm our vehicle or, God forbid, us or a neighbor.

Very poor business conduct. We will never patronise that restaurant because this whole thing has been so infuriating.

Also: +1 about the refund. Every paying customer (not that "very nice" Tommy) should get a free month after this fiasco. We have been paying the same $165 and NOT getting the gated parking that we all pay for.

Quote:

chrisjc wrote:
I think it would have been respectful of the paying customers to alert us via email and signs that the door will not be closed for weeks.... it's too bad the restaurant does not have their parking ready yet, but this is a private lot that we pay $165/month for.... they could have been given clickers for it or had someone work the lot during restaurant hours if they desperately needed parking. There is absolutely no reason that the doors need to remain open 24/7. The management company's main priority should be the customers, not feeling bad for a restaurant that has a delayed opening to their own lot....

Don't forget the permits that didn't stick, which then fell down, leading to tow notices on vehicles.
