I really, really hate Comcast.
That's why we're getting Fios as soon as they can get out here to install. I can't wait!

In July, I cancelled Comcast and switched to Verizon FIOS. There was a credit of $73.28 on my account. I never received a refund from Comcast. I forgot about it too. Last week, I saw the old statement for Comcast and I remembered that they owe me money. So, I called them last week about it. They said that they will open a ticket for it. They said that sometimes these things are not automatic. Ha! When I move to Jersey City and had to canceled Cablevision in Hoboken, Cablevision sent me the refund the next month automatically.

Today, I finally got a call that they will put the refund on my credit card.

Make sure you got your refund from Comcast if you switched to Verizon FIOS.

Ms. Bert-

Just call Comcast and tell them you have seen a lot of great offers for FIOS and that your neighbors have switched and are raving about it. The Comcast rep should be able to come back with a better monthly price, even if it's just for a six-month "promotion." You can always call again when that's up to get another discount.

We've been doing this with Comcast for YEARS and it's kept the costs pretty reasonable.

I do the same.

New channels here

http://www.comcastworldofmore.com/jerseycity/

All the HD channels are now in the 800's and they are grouped together by type better, which is nice.

Now if they can get Fox Soccer Channel in HD, that would be sweet.

Thanks. We have Dish Network in our building, but they no longer carry MSG at all, since they are fighting with Cablevision (who isn't?). I may go with Comcast now.

i don't have TV or phone package and my Comcast internet just went up to over $60 a month! and we don't rent a modem or have a fancy package or anything, everything is basic. is there a cheaper option downtown? i find it ridiculously high for internet-only.

Just saw that there are some new Xfinity (Comcast) Hotspots in town - http://www.nj.com/hobokennow/index.ss ... unches_wifi_hotspots.html There are about 15 in all of Jersey City, 4 of which are downtown, and it looks like there are none in the heights.

The annoying part is that there are about 15 hotspots in all of Jersey City and more than 150 in Hoboken and Bayonne. JC has a population of 240,000, Hoboken 38,000 and Bayonne 61,000 (as of 2000 census) You can see the map here - http://comcast.cellmaps.com/wifi.html

If you want to let Comcast know what you you can reach them here - https://secure.opinionlab.com/ccc01/co ... 1286914542613&custom_var=

We lost some channels on our tv without the box on Tuesday. I ordered the digital convertor online Wednesday, got the box yesterday and just hooked it up. It was remarkably painless and easy. I expect the tv to blow up shortly ;) LOL

Comcast or Verizon is a no-brainer. I too am hoping for a move soon and would consider a locale with only Comcast a complete and thorough reason to turn the place down.

I am only putting up with curret Comcast shenanigans because I am biding my time. I will not EVER deal with this company again.

mrsag,
Good luck with your move and DON'T choose Comcast or Xfinity (their new name to re-snag a few unwary poor souls.)

I guess as soon as Comcast completes its purchase of NBC, they'll destroy that company too...along with its many affiliates. It's going to shock them when they find out that NBC isn't a MONOPOLY and will actually be required to be COMPETENT to survive, something new for Comcast.

Why those big plastic jiggers on the ends of the included coax rather than the regular small metal screw-ons?

So moving into a new place in JC on Tuesday.
Comcast OR Verzion?

Probably not many votes for Comcast on this thread. But if there are lets hear em and if people love their Verizon FIOS lets hear it.

Thanks!

apparently, microsoft and espn recently joined forces and soon you'll be able to stream espn360 content (baseball, tennis, soccer, and i think the nba, but not nfl) via an xbox.

if espn is what keeps you attached to cable and you do not need the nfl, another reason to ditch the monthly extortion.

Yeah, clearly QAM is pointless. I'll either go whole hog, rent a set top box and buy a Hauppauge HD-PVR usb tuner/encoder, or more likely just buy a USB-UIRT box that can let the PC's DVR program change the channels on the converter. The latter is definitely less of a project.

I'm trying to get my family to go the cableless Netflix hulu OTA & torrent route, but it's a tough negotiation. I've been using a homebrew PC-DVR for many years but now have to get a new tuner card that can control the cable converter box. But it's better than paying those pricks a monthly rental.

As for filters on the converter box, the one I received has none, just coax in and out. The thing about the box that probably messed up cfJC is that the box needs it's MAC address to be registered just like a cablemodem, you don't just plug it in and go.

we were thinking of cancelling cable, but decided to go ahead and get the digital box anyway and decide later. huge, costly mistake. they sent me a box, then told me it was broken. sent another, same thing. third one came with a service man who told me the previous two were fine, comcast just sends them out and doesn't set them up for use before then.

Service guy (very nice guy) takes one of the boxes back, forgets the other, and leaves.

I get an enormous bill for shipping costs of three boxes, service man coming to house, and a bill for two TVs set up with digital because the old, broken box is still in my possession.

I fought with someone for about five minutes before I asked to be transferred to cancellation. Cancelled service about a month ago and we're thrilled. hulu, streaming netflix, new shows on basic channels that we get with an antennae-- i should have cancelled a long time ago.

so glad to be done with them.

I am guessing but what I think is going on is that EVENTUALLY, COmcast will cablecast all digital but as of today they are not.
QAM will get whatever they give UNencrypted, and little by little they are winnowing them down to only those channels that on could get locally with a good antenna.

As of now the are still giving SOME channels in what they call EXTENDED BASIC for the price of LIMITED BASIC to those with QAM...but as of today about 10 of them were lopped off, including TCM (38), SYFY (44), HGTV (67.)

It is reminiscent of the "old days" when cable companies would scramble channels and make you rent a box for unscrambling.

So, in reality, if you are paying for EXTENDED BASIC, you need a box for it today or you are cheating yourself.

As far as figuring out their pricing, it is impossible because they call their crap, LIMMITED BASIC, EXPANDED BASIC, EXTENDED BASIC, DIGITAL ECONOMY, DIGITAL STARTER, STANDARD SERVICE, they won;t commit as to which service gets which channels...and that's only the entry level jargon. I counted the items on their pricing list and stopped at 235 when my eyes got bleary.
Notice even on their HOW TO AD they won't tell you what channels the "Digital Transport adapter" will get.

The worst company in the United States has just gotten worse.

One thing I did notice, and I'm not sure exactly when it happened, is that without a cablebox, we are losing the ability to tune in a lot of the cable channels via a TV's QAM tuner. Comcast is encrypting a whole lot of the non-broadcast channels, both HD and SD so that you can't receive them without one of their boxes, and therefore an "additional outlet fee."

Gonna check the TV's and see if the "World of More" is a world of much less.
Both my sets are QAM and might not be much affected becasue QAM is a digital cable tuner..

Of course, what they will do with Limited Basic, Basic, Extended Basic and whatever other silliness they have dreamed up is anyone's guess.

One thing I noted on that endless loop on the Comcast Channel. The connector from "digital transport adapter" has two very large ends and probably contain some sort of semiconductor whoodoo in them...my guess is they are filters to further truncate available channels.

Whatever, knowing Comcast the changeover will be a complete and unmitigated disaster.

Has anyone hooked one of these "free" adapters yet?

(I was going to start this as a seperate thread but since GP began it in the HATE COMCAST thread, I thought I'd put it here. I'm sure it will indeed be hateful. )

edit: Checked it out. Yep, several channels are missing but Comcast LIED about the reason because many of the channels are STILL being broadcast in shitty analogue. Now WHY doesn't this surprise me one bit?

Some Comcast subscribers will need new cable boxes for digital upgrade

Thursday, August 26, 2010
By BRETT WILSHE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Some Comcast subscribers in Jersey City will be making the move from analog to digital cable due to company wide policy changes.

The cable company is rolling out a digital service upgrade to subscribers of the limited basic and expanded basic cable services. The upgrade, called "World of More," will require subscribers to get a set top box and converters for their televisions.

"The world has gone digital," Comcast spokeswoman Alisha Martin said. "'World of More' will bring the digital quality and services to those subscribers."

The decision was a response to the burden that traditional analog cable channels place on the company's bandwidth. Martin says that relieving the stress on their networks will allow them to offer more content and channels for the basic plans.

The equipment is free and comes with a self-install kit, but a professional installation can be set up for a fee, Martin said. Monthly bills will remain the same for customers, she said.

Not everyone will require a set top box. Subscribers of the limited basic service will only require a digital adapter, also at no charge.

She noted that the upgrade service will only affect the 15 percent of Comcast's subscribers in the city who don't have digital service already.

Limited and expanded basic subscribers have until Sept. 22 to get the necessary equipment, which can be picked up at a Comcast service center, or ordered by calling 1-877-634-4434 or visiting www.Comcast.com/digitalnow.

Actually, I think they work in tandem: We get a 25% increase in cable bills semi annually...he gets a 25% salary + bonus + perks + jets + hookers + hustlers increase twice a year.
