I thought he said he was going to fight this?

What happened? Did he lie about that too?

he had a $128K job with a city department in addition to serving on the council? When did he have time to do both jobs effectively?

Double dipping just burns me.

Has anyone sniffed around his finances? I can't imagine this was his first bribe. I've heard he owns multiple places in NJ, one in NY and some in Brazil I think.

I can't imagine this lifestyle is all funded from legit W-2 earnings...

Also does the plea mean he'll no longer be entitled to his various pension benefits - those are big numbers...

Vega has shown nothing but contempt for the voters of Jersey City.

Unfortunately, I don't think he's alone in that.

well. done.

Shouldn't his calculated, disgraceful actions be used in court to add to his sentencing? It doesn't give the appearance of being remorceful, if anything it shows he is still being underhanded.

I thought the Jersey City Independent put it perfectly with their editorial today:

JCI Editorial: Dear Mariano Vega*
By The Editors ? Sep 14th, 2010 ? Category: Lead Story, Politics

Dear Mr. Vega*:

So you finally decided to step down; was it our three editorials calling for your resignation, or the several others our media colleagues up at Journal Square wrote? Oh wait, we guess it wasn?t, since we?d both been writing them for over a year.

We never assumed you were guilty, but we felt you couldn?t serve effectively with this cloud over your name ? that?s why we, the Journal and a number of other politicians and citizens kept asking you to leave the City Council.

But you refused.

?The events of this past Thursday were as shocking to me as they were to everyone else. I am not guilty of the allegations,? you said at first. ?In our system of justice we are presumed innocent until proven guilty. I do not intend to resign as council president, nor as a councilman.?

But that turned out to be rather short-lived.

Several months later, you said you were ?temporarily stepping down ? as council president? until you were ?completely exonerated.? But you continued to maintain your innocence, and stayed on the City Council as an At-Large member, casting votes on everything from replacement council members to tax increases.

And today you pleaded guilty to taking $20,000 in cash from Solomon Dwek, and agreeing to take $10,000 more.

You served on the City Council for over a year knowing that the charges against you were true.

And as the Journal?s Melissa Hayes is reporting, you agreed to the plea deal in May.

So you also continued to serve after you?d decided to plead guilty. You resigned last week instead of, say, last month, thereby avoiding that messy little thing called democracy, in the form of a special election to decide your replacement.

?Disgraceful? doesn?t come close to describing your actions.

Best,
The Jersey City Independent

It is done:

Latest JJ article:

Quote:
Former Jersey City Councilman Mariano Vega pleaded guilty this morning to accepting bribes.

Vega, who resigned from City Council yesterday, appeared before U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares and admitted to accepting bribes from Solomon Dwek, a real estate developer turned government informant. Vega admitted that he took the money in exchange for helping Dwek secure approvals for a purported development on Garfield Avenue.

Vega, 60, admitted to accepting $20,000 in bribes and agreeing to accept another $10,000 in July 2009 from Dwek.

When Linares asked him how he pleaded this morning, Vega responded, "Guilty, your honor." In pleading guilty Vega agreed to forfeit the $20,000 he accepted from Dwek.

Vega faces 30 to 37 months when he is set sentenced Jan.7. Had he not pleaded guilty today, his case would have headed to trial Oct. 12. Following his arrest in July 2009, the county suspended him from his $128,244-a-year-job as director of the Department of Parks, Engineering and Planning. During the court proceeding, Linares said that the U.S. Attorney's Office sent Vega a letter detailing the plea agreement May 26. Afterward, Vega's attorney, Peter Willis of Jersey City, confirmed the May date, saying that was when talks began. "It's not a happy day for Mariano or the people of Jersey City,'' Willis told reporters after the hearing. "I was hopeful that we could litigate this case but in the end I had to do what was best for Mariano and his family.'' Vega was noticeably shaken when leaving the courtroom and declined to comment.

By waiting till the time ran out where a new council member could be elected, and letting the Healy machine appoint another yesman, Vega managed to give us a final slap as he walked out the door.

From that article:

Sources say his council aide, Hilario Nunez, is a likely successor.

Which will make Vega your Councilman-at-Large in exile. Make no mistake, he'll be making decisions on your behalf from his cell.

It really says something when these crooks make no attempt whatsoever to cover their corruptness.

So Nunez is an aide to Vega? I assume he'd be doing Vega's bidding. Kind of like John Gotti Jr.

Junior Friggin' Maldonado? Geez, talk about a re-tread...

All interested residents should go and submit the resume and a cover letter to the mayor's office, city clerk and all council persons (make sure Willie Flood receives it) !!!

In the criminal complaint, the BRIBER said that he felt he was "in good hands". The BRIBEE'S response was "like allstate".
(Part #6 in complaint)

Looks like we were in good hands too, but they were/are wrapped around our necks!

The gall of Healy to want to replace Vega with a guy that's been his underling for the past few years. First off, the Guy (Nunez) ran for Mayor and Council receiving very few votes and being a dual job holder for the last fee years. Oh wait, he fits right in with that crew.

Nice Freudian slip!

Given that the replacement will be appointed by the same bunch that barely managed to avoid indictment, don't hold your breath for "honor". We'll be lucky to get someone who can tie their shoes without a HCDO handler.

Jersey City councilman questions timing of Mariano Vega's resignation.

Published: Monday, September 13, 2010, 3:41 PM Updated: Monday, September 13, 2010, 3:41 PM

Melissa Hayes/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City Councilman Mariano Vega resigned today, one business day after the deadline to trigger a special election. The City Council will appoint a replacement.

Jersey City Councilman Mariano Vega?s resignation today has left one of his colleagues asking why now.

Vega was among the 46 individuals charged last year in a massive political corruption and money laundering sting. The then-council president refused to surrender his seat, but eventually gave up the presidency. Vega sent an e-mail around 5 p.m. Friday saying he was resigning effective today.

Had Vega resigned during business hours Friday, his seat would have been up for grabs in a special election in November.

Ward E Councilman Steven Fulop, who has been calling for Vega to step down, said his resignation was overdue. ?I think he should have done it a year ago and I think to do it at 5:01 (Friday), one minute after the deadline speaks to how they protect their power base and how they protect the system,? Fulop said. ?They are manipulating the political process as always.?

Vega has not returned a call seeking comment.

Wednesday is the last day for candidates seeking office in the special election to file petitions. The Hudson County Clerk?s Office said it had not yet received notice of Vega?s resignation. Vega submitted a formal, signed letter this morning after the city?s Law Department told him the e-mail was not sufficient.

Fulop said he felt Vega resigned after the close of business Friday to prevent a special election for his seat. ?They know what the law is and they did it intentionally,? Fulop said. ?I think that speaks to this whole political culture in Jersey City.?

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy was in a meeting and not immediately available to respond to the accusations, but he did release a statement earlier this afternoon about Vega?s resignation. ?We thank Mariano for his decades of public service to the city and the people of Jersey City, and we wish the best for him and his family,? Healy said in a statement.

Because Jersey City?s governing body is non-partisan the council will select a replacement. ?We?re working with the City Council to try and build a consensus for a replacement for Mariano, so that this important position in city government does not stay vacant for any prolonged period of time,? Healy said.

Vega was among a number of Jersey City officials being targeted by a recall movement. Riaz Wahid, a member of the recall group, said he hopes a suitable replacement will be named. ?I hope the mayor and City Council president will solicit resumes from qualified and talented citizens to fill Mr. Vega?s position,? Wahid said. ?They must keep this process open and fair since they took away the opportunity to elect from the people of Jersey City.?

I'm sure it was the latter, just another move in the HCDO game of never throwing away a card that could be played well to gain them power and influence. Now they have something to be traded and owe Vega for sitting tight giving it to them. Sounds a bit like Blagojevich: ?I?ve got this thing and it?s f?-ing golden, I?m not giving it up for f?-ing nothing. I?m not gonna do it.?

From the moment he uttered those words last July, the clock should have started running on how much salary and benefits he should be required to repay. Yes, Mr. Vega. Innocent until proven guilty. The American way. Just write a check for $60,000 or so, drop the keys to the Jeep and quietly walk your walk of shame.

Yeah, don't give the voters a chance to have a say who the replacement is.

Vega's one last kick to the sack of the tax-paying residents.
