Thanks everyone. Lot of options @ the shore. I would never go to an NYC beach.

Stone Harbor - my idea of the perfect Jersey Shore. It has beautiful white sandy beaches, a charming main drag (96th St), and The Point - a park on the southern tip that changes drastically with the tides, revealing hidden islands and trapping critters in tidal pools for closer inspection. The beaches along the entire town are ideal for walking and the sand slopes gently into the water making the perfect amount of surf for boogie boarders and toddlers alike.

It's a bit of a drive (not as far as Cape May) but well worth the trip for a day at the beach!

Long Branch, NJ- it's close (45min/1hour), clean, and has a bunch of stores and restaurants if you need a break from the sun.

Our favorite beach is Island Beach State Park (exit 82 of GSP), certainly closer than Long Beach Island from jersey City. It is a 1.5 hour drive door to door from downtown JC to the beach parking lot with very little traffic. The island runs for about 8 miles, with two beaches staffed by lifeguards and with concession stands and showers. There are also several unguarded beach spots for those who seek more solitude, fishing, etc. The water is pretty clean, we have spotted several fish, brown manta rays, and even dolphins! here are also some ranger-led programs and hiking trails.

TIP: For dog owners, the second swimming area has a section at the end that allows dogs, and that's our favorite spot to hang out by, just to enjoy the company of the dogs even though we don't have one.

For more information on this State park visit their website:

I still think LBI or Point Pleasant are the way to go. LBI has many types of beaches and has lots of interesting places to see. And at LBI you are not going to get alot or riff raff or trouble making folks. You go to Bradley Beach, Seaside Heights or Coney....you are going to get lots of douches.

Two things i noticed with LBI...is that there isn't much diversity of folks....at least so far as i have observed. The other problem is that some of the most beautiful stretches of beach is blocked by people's large mansions....even though it's suppose to be public access....sometimes u have to go out of ur way.....or literally risk going through their property which can present a problem.

Don?t know what type of beach you are looking for?but Point Pleasant, NJ has something for everyone. (not quiet like Cape May or LBI though)

Nice boardwalk, arcades, food, kiddy rides, bars, aquarium, long beach.

It has pay parking lots and metered street parking. If parking is tight close to the beach you can park blocks away from the beach on the street for free and walk. Train station is in town.

Have fun.

To answer your question: Atlantic City and Asbury Park, both in NJ. But Coney is pretty cool.

For car-less JCers, I suggest the ferry to Sandy Hook (from ferry terminal you can also ride a bike to Sea Bright, which has a little more going on), train to Long Beach (Nassau County), or train to Long Branch, Belmar, or Manasquan.

Sandy Hook, there are about 8-10? separate beaches the most popular is Gunnison Beach the clothing optional beach.
It's a short drive from JC.

Long Beach Island. You have so many different areas and beaches in that stretch of coast line....and a lovely light house.

For a day trip I would suggest something closer like"

Asbury Park
Monmouth Beach
Sea Girt
Sea Bright

I would probably not go below exit 102.

I have been to a couple of beaches in south jersey and a couple in central jersey. So far I found Cape May the best. I would like to hear from fellow JCites about their favorite beach. I am trying to decide where to go for a day trip this weekend. So far thinking of LBI, since cape may is a bit far for a day trip.

The train stops that are near a larger beach are, north to south, Long Branch, Allenhurst, Asbury Park, Bradley Beach, Belmar, Spring Lake, Manasquan, Point Pleasant, and Bay Head.

Obviously, the further south you go, the longer and more expensive the trip. There are more activities and active boardwalks (and more crowds) at Asbury Park, Belmar, Manasquan, and Point Pleasant. Long Branch has Pier Village and some stores along Ocean Ave. Bradley Beach is a little more quiet than Belmar. Spring Lake is probably the most quiet of the bunch and has a small downtown area a few blocks in.

I'd recommend Spring Lake for a more relaxing day and Long Branch or Asbury Park for something more exciting and Belmar/Manasquan/Point Pleasant if you want to get drunk and get laid.

I worked on the redevelopment and reimagining of Asbury Park - so many great restaurants and great beach!

But i didn't see anyone mention my all time favorite!

Spring Lake. hands down, best beach north of LBI!!

For serious family fun, I'd recommend state parks such as Wawayanda, Kittatinny, Ringwood, Roundwood, or one of the many parks north and west of NJ, most within an hours drive of JC.

You get the beach, you get the free benches, charcoal grills. You get some amazing nature trails. And you get to avoid the crowded shore beaches.

Great recommendations.

Just remember that no booze is allowed in most if not all of these state parks. Park Rangers generally look the other way if you have beer in foam cover sleeve. Row boating in Lake Waywayanda is fun.

Asbury Park hands down...so easy to park, not expensive.

I also go to a dog friendly beach at Manasquan Fisherman's Cove...fun times if you've got a pup that likes water (and other dogs)

It's probably not the closest beach to JC but Seaside Heights has always been my favorite NJ shore town.

My mother lives at the NJ beach (near Bayhead) and I don't visit her on summer weekends at all due to the crazy, shore bound traffic on the NJ Parkway. If you have the option to head to the beach at 7am or so, on a Saturday,
do it. Any weekday should also be good driving. Just sayin'.

The Jersey shore line runs down to Point Pleasant/Bay Head, but is quite a trek - over 2 1/2 hours at the weekend from Hoboken to say Asbury Park.

http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TrainTo

You'd be better off picking up some beach gear from Walmart or Target (chairs, umbrella, cooler, sodas), rent a car or SUV, and making your own way there in under half the time for costs equivalent to train fares and beach rentals.

On the Jersey Shore, Keansburg is the closest equivalent to Coney Island, with the amusement park, waterpark and local beach. Atlantic City at the south end of NJ is a mini Las Vegas with casinos, boardwalks, beach and everything you could want in one place. Some great beaches between the two, with varying facilities. For example I love Sandy Hook - but it's very much a DIY beach, and it can be a hike to restrooms and the nearest drinks and food seller.

I went to the beach Saturday, Coney Island. If you can manage sitting on the train for well over an hour to get there, then I would go? Take Path to 33rd and walk over to the subway 34th and MSG, hop on the F train to Stillwell avenue Coney Island, the last stop and the beach is right there.

thanks all.

JCGirl. I have employed the power of google. Good thing about forums like these is personal insight. Example: "so and so beach isn't officially dog friendly but people have dogs at the sound end and don't get bothered" type thing.

The closest beach to my knowledge where dogs are allowed during the summer season is the inlet side of Sandy Hook, across the road from the ocean side beach. There are no amenities, but lots of room for the dogs to splash around.
