We've used Rolando @ Clearflow several times. He's responsive, reasonable and trustworthy. We had tried Kook but found them incredibly expensive.

I used Kook and sons this week based on this thread.
They did a good job and were cheaper than I thought they would be.

I want to give a sterling recommendation for a job well done to Al of Super Rooter (888.533.5551). He and his assistant Eddie didn't have to tear up all my walls and tunnel through to find a cracked sewer pipe that was leaking down three floors. Minimum fuss, avoidance of a huge fetid black mess, easy and quick cleanup. They even do the carpentry repairs afterwards. Reasonable price and fast, professional work!

bathroom fixture replacements are between 2000-5000 ...so the price seems ok... but again as I have said before every situation is different.....if you have an old home with clay pipes and you change a 50 year old toilet..its not going to be a simple fix....
Also reminder you need a permit from the JC building dept and a licensed plumber.

A huge amount of the "plumbing" out there IS handyman level, repairing or replacing faucets, fixing leaky traps etc. Paying a plumber's assistant $150/hr for that, if you aren't handy yourself, doesn't make sense. Only a licensed contractor can pull permits for paid work, but the work that needs permits is where the expertise that's worth paying for should come in. If your uncle is starving for work yet won't lower prices or give more quotes, someone needs to give him a lesson in basic economics and business. I'm sure he made tons when there weren't enough plumbers for all the work and he could cherry pick, but the wheel has gone round and he's just in denial.

Brewster - couldnt agree more.
I made the mistake of putting a down payment. Then they feel like they can do whatever they want bc you're locked in. Stupid move on my part.

Brewster:
I asked 2 plumbers their prices and what their opinion is of your statement. One told me that there prices of materials and labor have not gone down, neither have taxes, gas, insurance, worker's compensation etc so even if they would like to they can't afford it. They did agree that anyone can get as many quotes as possible but many contractors have a hard time going to give many quotes since many times it leads to nowhere. It's a double edged sword. Also, if we are talking about a technical field such as plumbing or electrical you should call a licensed one,but most settle for the local "handyman" which is cheaper than a licensed plumber. Many don't want to get permits. My uncle says he's licensed and he won't lower his prices, he says most people call him after they have hired the so called cheaper contractors and they mess up and he ends up making more.....sad reality for the homeowner who tried to go the cheap route. cheaper is not always better.

From my vast experience I have a surefire formula for being a successful plumber or electrician. 1 - call people back 2 - give a competitive price 3 - be polite about questions 4 - be honest about whether a permit is needed 5 - do the job right, and don't insist on being paid before the inspection. 6 - call people back When I get charged $2000 labor for a job it took 2 assistants (rather than the actual plumber) 6 hours to do wrong, I get annoyed. They're charging $160/hr for guys they probably pay no more than $30 for the main guy and $15 for the assistant's assistant. Every "homeowners guide" will tell you to get 3 prices for a job. Contractors around here get offended at such behavior and rather than be competitive will simply never return a call from you again. I've detected no sign of the slowdown lowering prices or softening the "take no prisoners" attitude.

Agreed, dont use Rizzi. Whoever recommended him on this forum is either his friend or relative.
You can find a better plumber out there.

I used Rizzi, does a good job, but he is VERY typical...oh this job is more involved give me more money.. Extremely whinny and uses top-of-the-market prices. I recommend firing him when he gives you this call an hour into the job.

As a precaution, always make sure that you never ever pay anything upfront in full. I always make sure to set up contracts in 4 payments (depending on the type of job). At each step of the process I pay for the contractor services (initial deposit and payments at each phase). The contractor never gets a dime unless they pass inspection (rough and final). A friend of a friend shelled out $100k for an addition and the contractor left the job before it was complete.
Plus check if the contractor has proper docs to be messing with your plumbling/electrical/etc... Also, get at least three quotes. It helps to weed out contractors who want to charge double when everyone else is at half that. If your hot water heater bursts, then you are a bit vulnerable unless you have a good plumber already. Good luck!

If I was a plumber that wanted business all I would have to do is post fake stories of all of my competition and turn all the JClisters on them....lol.....it's that easy here...
If this tab "Contractors" is supposed to help all of us there needs to be a better way of getting recommendations on both sides. I have licensed plumbers in my family and they are all hurting. As someone in the business I think this tab "contractors" is a waste. These comments are hard to verify and many are one- sided. Can we get a tab where contractors report JC residents when they scheme contractors out of money or waste their time? I have plenty.......... there has to be a better way to put people in contact with contractors. Word to the wise...the good plumbers aren't the ones with the big ads, and the fancy offices...they are the mom and pop old fashioned guys that are usually disorganized but love what they do and still come out to help if they can.... Keep in mind that a licensed plumber is a real plumber. If you hire someone without a license and you don't pull permits you are part of the problem. Trust me...my dad is one and he isn't close to being well-off. His credit lines were cut and a lot of people owe him money and he doesn't have time to go on JC list and post their names.

I would call the BB anyway and explain the situation. Why didn't the plumber tell you that there's blockage and that he needed to dig up the concrete 6 months ago? I'm sure the situation hasn't changed since then. So instead of doing the correct job the 1st time, he decided to charge you twice. That's not right, I would definitely report them. These guys aren't struggling. This past year, the city hooked them all up with 12K-20K jobs installing useless backflow preventers.

He told me that the pipe was blocked and that I needed to pay him another $1k to open the concrete in my yard to repair the pipe.
This was almost 6 months ago--can I still report them?

I would call back the plumber that charged you 1k to snake your pipes and demand that he install a sump pump free of charge unless he wants to be reported to the better business bureau. He failed to do a job you hired him to do, he should return and fix it until its done right.

Any recommendations for a GREAT PLUMBER?
Last summer, with all of the rain, my sewer kept backing up/draining slow. I had a plumber come in and waste my time & $$ trying to clean it (snaking). $1k later, my drain still gets backed up. My block in JC has weird sewers drain toward the back instead of the front. SO I need a plumber who knows and understand this. Also someone who knows what he is doing as not to waste my time or money. I am on the McKinley Park/Bergen Lafayette border. Hit me up. Thanks!

I recently used Dan Rizzi (845-492-1201) to fix a clogged shower drain. He was very good, inexpensive and called the day before to confirm.

I had Clear Flow come out tonight for a slow drain. It turned out they needed to snake the main... they charged me $650 plus tax for 45 minutes of work, and didn't even put the plumbing back together when they left. It all works and they say you can't argue with results, but it seems you can be a little bitter about them.
Mark.
