You can try Raul at Roof Doctor 201-798-0991. He did a small flat roof for me (from scratch), maybe 12' x 14'. He does torch down roofing.

Is he bonded? I liked him and his quote, but want someone insured, etc...

Someone from Accomplished came by on Saturday and I was not impressed.

First of all, he arrives with a ladder inadequate enough to reach my roof. I live in a one family, 3 level house (basement, first/ground floor & second floor), so #sideeye.

Second, I explained to him that I have been in the house 3 years and the roof just started leaking. So, I am not sure if the roof needs to be patched or if the seller had a crappy job done and it is more economical to get a new roof.

So, this dude proceeds to tell me (again - he has NOT even seen the condition of my roof because his ladder is too "short") that he thinks I just need roof maintenance for $980, which has a two year warranty. SO, if I agree to the $980 -- he could them go get his ladder and fix my roof. I told him he could go get his ladder, get on my roof and give me a quote supported by an actual inspection.

Why would I spend $980 when I could just get a new roof (if needed) for a bit more? Don't roofs have a 5 year warranty?

Is this a normal interaction? I feel like Is $980 extreme for "roof maintence"? Typically, how much would a new roof cost in Jersey City? I'm from another city, so any advice would be helpful as I look at other (more professional) contractors...

Thanks! Since I posted, found a link to the Division of Parks and Forestry and requested that they trim the tree on the sidewalk.

I'll call the J.C. Housing Code Authority tomorrow. I'm trying to avoid having to pay for it since I already had to pay for my brand new roof to be repaired and it is not my responsibility.

TREEESSSSS!!

Happy Tuesday!!

I don't know where to post this, so I thought here would suffice...

My neighborS' seriously both sides AND another house 2 doors down) backyard trees are extremely overgrown and touching my house. I have also had to have my roof/skylights fixed because twigs and leaves from these trees are falling on my roof -- has anyone dealt with this and have any suggestions on how to address this?

My neighbors are older and been living there a long time so I don't know if they have the $$ to trim/cut their trees if I asked them. I don't mind contributing toward the cost (but really don't want to because these are NOT my trees), so I would love to avoid having to shell out the money.

Does JC have a department that I could call to assist?

Also, the tree in front of my house (on the sidewalk) is also overgrown..anyone know if this a JC or ForF(i.e. my)problem....

Thanks!

I am so sorry!! The updated flier came in the mail Wednesday...

I believe it is the church on Highlannd/West Bergen.....but you can call Officer Criton (she is the rep for the West District) at 201.647.6519. Tell her you are interested in attending and she'll send you the flier with all of the information.(and add you to the mailing list)...

In the meantime, if you PM your email, I can scan and email you the flier..

He told me that the pipe was blocked and that I needed to pay him another $1k to open the concrete in my yard to repair the pipe.

This was almost 6 months ago--can I still report them?

Sewer Plumber

Any recommendations for a GREAT PLUMBER?

Last summer, with all of the rain, my sewer kept backing up/draining slow. I had a plumber come in and waste my time & $$ trying to clean it (snaking). $1k later, my drain still gets backed up.

My block in JC has weird sewers drain toward the back instead of the front. SO I need a plumber who knows and understand this. Also someone who knows what he is doing as not to waste my time or money.

I am on the McKinley Park/Bergen Lafayette border. Hit me up.

Thanks!

I'm pissed about property taxes being raised AGAIN, which affects my ability to eat...but to echo geniusofthecrowd's sentiment, I am not going to smash a window about it.

Just a hypothetical question: At what point, do we hold people accountable for their actions? Just because you are a teenager does that give you a bye for bad behavior (just to clarify, I am not saying all teens behave badly/commit all crimes. But bad a$$ teens grow up into bad a$$ adults). Part of the problem is we make excuses for EVERYTHING.

This convo has completely morphed into another discussion and I am not trying to give off the impression that I am some cold heartless Republican. At the end of the day, the JCPD will continue to do very little to decrease the crime rate in the city and taxes will go up.. but I plan to keep kicking and screaming until a change comes..

To shane612 -- you know what they say about those who make assumptions....

While I have not worked with the troubled teens from Jersey City, I have worked with troubled youth in Harlem and Brooklyn for almost 15 years. The only point in your post that I agree with is that they are good and bad in everything, BUT the "good" ones aren't really going to be affected by a curfew, which is what this thread is about. Most of the "good" ones are working toward their future or involving themselves in productive activities...and NOT loitering during curfew hours..

I am all for lending a helpful hand, but not naive enough to believe everyone can be turned around....

I haven't been paying attention because I don't spend all of my free time on here...but thanks for pointing that out about the ones arrested. However, I am not sure how that is related to this concern is beyond me because the person(s) doing it have NOT been caught.

I am waiting to hear some other suggestions on what can be done to alleviate this issue, as well as other issues affecting this city.

Lastly, to those of you coming to the defense of these teens, I'd be curious to hear how much time do you ACTUALLY spend/interact with these teens that you waste keystokes defending?

To the person who asked if the curfew will really help --I'm not sure. But I doubt it would hurt. What other suggestions do you have?

And to an extent, yes they must be somewhat afraid of getting caught tagging. Or else they'd be doing in broad daylight and not sneaking around in the middle of night (during curfew hours, mind you).

Maybe where you grew up, hanging out in the streets was a normal thing. It was NEVER a normal thing for me and my friends. Before you start, I am black (not American) and grew up in Brooklyn. After school, I was in sports, dance, cheerleading and other programs. By dark, I was in the house or getting picked up from an activity. But definitely not running the streets until 10pm!!

There is a very distinct difference between the kids of today and the kids of when I was young (and I am in my early 30's). There is no respect and a sense of entitlement. The other morning on the crowded bus, a hs kid was putting on his back pack and hit me. I tapped him and said "Hey you hit me when you out on your bag. ". His response: "OH". Not "I'm sorry"....seriously, what kind of kids are we raising??!!

I absolutely whole-heartedly agree with a curfew!

What is a kid under 17 doing out after 10 pm anyway? Coming home from a part time job? I would bet that is a small percentage of the ones who are out running the streets. A kid with responsibilities is not loitering...

I am not just not buying the teen's civil rights argument. For the past few weeks, cars on my block have been vandalized with graffiti -- I wonder if it is some teen who should be at home under this curfew?

If you are interested, here's the info for Block Watch: http://www.njjcpd.org/. Click on Community Relations (across top), then JCPD Block Watch (along left).

I implore everyone to contact them and get involved!

I promised to post the West District's Captain's meeting info and keep forgetting...It is the third Wednesday of the month (February 17th, March 17th and so on) --MARK YOUR CALNDARS. I will post location prior to the date.

I saw another car tagged on block this Monday night..I think they do it on Sunday nights on Park Street if you park in front of 20 Park Street (renovated building).

I hope the owner reported it!

JCPD are absolutely useless! I call the precinct and they tell me to call another number to file a report via phone.

How will know who is doing it if they don't take pictures and detail what it says? I could not decipher the crap that was written (animals can write, but not in english apparently) and told them that, so its not like my description is really helpful.

Seriously, JC? Wait until the next Captain's meeting! Anyone on here go to the west district's?

I live in Bergen Lafayette. I walk pass my car yesterday morning on the way to work and noticed some punk tagged my car in black magic marker!
Are you f-ing kidding me?

I am going to the PD tonight to file a report--any other suggestions on things I can do? Is this a new trend? Oh and any recommendations on how to remove?

Seriously, they need to put these thugs on a boat and leave them in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean...ugh...

Umm....I don't know how slow you drive, but I have EASILY made it into the city in 20 minutes from Park Street (and I turn down Astor to swing around to Grand St. ) during my social commute. I have made it to BK in 30-35 minutes early weekends. Yes, I drive fast...but can't possibly drive THAT fast...

I agree...I work downtown NYC and my work commute is easily 40 - 60 minutes door to door (between bus, squeezing onto PATH, etc)...

Does anyone know if there is a block association/community group, etc for this area or these blocks? I'd really like to get involved!

The mosque on Park Street used to organize meetings every month or so, but I have not seen any fliers lately.

Thanks!

IMHO??

I bought my house on Park Street, so the front of my house faces the back side of the hs and rarely have any problems with the hs or the kids. BUT, I also work in NYC during the day and am not around to have to deal with them. My biggest complaint would be more about the kids on the bus ---FYI there is a hs, middle school AND an elementary school on the bus route btwn BergLaf and downtown. So, that makes the commute in the am fabu! But that's another post discussion...

If this is the house of your dreams (which is what I bought), then GET IT. Seriously. You won't get the details, character, charm like this for anywhere near this price. EVER. Seriously EVER.

BUT if you get easily uncomfortable around "different" kinds of people, you may want to think twice or weigh how much you love the house vs. getting over your insecurities (I'm not talking about you specifically, just generally. This is the same spiel I give all of my friends about moving into the neighborhood;o). You need to figure out if you can deal with that and get over it. Some people are not comfortable outside of their comfort zone --nothing wrong with it, but it is what it is. If you can live in Harlem or east Williamsburg aka Bushwick, then you'll be fine over here. If you have been inside of a bodega and not wanted to pee on yourself, you should be fine over here. Aside from Ray- Ray trying to get my phone number, I really don't get bothered in the 'hood. And its no worse or more prevalent that Noah's attempts on the UES or Ramon on 135th/ Amsterdam when I'm in those areas.

The good thing is these little cluster of blocks are mostly comprised families/older people. So, its mostly quiet in here. AND the Muslim school/mosque on Park does a good job of providing an element of fear (are you going to act up around the mosque? Seriously?). They also renovated what used to be THE crack house on Park Street (rents start at $1,500 I heard ~side eye to mgmt company), so that also removed an element of crime/unsavoriness from the neighborhood.

Sorry for the long reponse, but I love my house. And after a a little over a year, I am still glad that I bought it. I hope I did a good job of putting the pros and cons in persoective. But it's a toss up....
