@Kitcat and @Fraulein, you're very welcome. I hope it helped you, even if just a little bit. I use New York (The Battery) under the New York Harbor section at the top of the page when I look at it, since I'm in Paulus Hook.

The picture of the cop car is priceless, although after reading the story it seems they were parked there diverting traffic when the waters came up instead of actually driving into it. Still, priceless.

The normal rainfall for all of August in New York is 4 inches - which means the city was socked with two months worth of rain in a single day.

Yes, thanks - this is great! Are you using Weehawken - I didn't see JC? We also noticed that at high tide last night around 9:30, it seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back and we started to get trickling.

Hope everyone faired ok yesterday.

Remember never to drive through a flooded street if you don't know how deep it is.

sussexst Thanks for posting the Tide Chart, it was really accurate, as soon as the high tide came in that is exactly when we had a problem yesterday.

On Grove. Seems recent road construction made things worse than ever, as rain did not appear worse than usual. Then JCMUA people were fixing drain pipes on Grove today..a band aid I imagine.

If it makes anyone feel better, that storm hit everywhere yesterday. One stretch of 440 north of Comm'paw was basically 6-12 inches deep for a good couple hundred feet.

We had water pouring out of our toilet on the ground floor. Probably 4-6 inches, most of it able to be contained in the bathroom at least. Definitely the worst I've seen in the past three years as far as backflow goes. We had more water in the whole apartment back in March '10 but most all of that was ground water coming up through the foundation, not sewage backup. I think this was a combination of the high tide and a massive amount of water in a short period of time (about 2 inches within an hour.) Been working on cleanup with gloves and bleach ever since. Best of luck to everyone with the next time

We had a couple of inches of water. It was the worst flooding in the house since we purchased it over three years ago. We have three sump pumps going and they were all working. Water seemed to have backed up, even up the tub drain on the first floor.

I got nailed, I had a foot of lovely sewage water, and water from my negligent neighbor who tore up his house without a permit and has since stopped construction so all his water seeps over to my place (he dug right through the cement slab, tore down the wall and left it as is and has no pump at all). I had 6 pumps going yesterday, I'm freakin thrilled!

It's a disgrace that Healy and the JCMUA are not installing pumping stations in Jersey City. Talk about lack of leadership!

I watch the weather when we are away and there was nothing about this storm that caused us any need to be concerned, moreso than the heavy rains of March/April, that's why when our awesome neighbor saw a backup of about a foot near our front area (single family home on 5th near Monmouth), we were shocked. A friend who works for the army corp of engineers said that it was a water main, so maybe he has some intel.

Sperm whale sighted on Washington!!

The sad part is that it doesn't even look like it was raining that hard, and the sewer was about to blow. Bring on the Hoboken pumps. We need 'em here.

We had sewer back-up and flooded basements in Hamilton Park as well. The Coles St. underpass under the viaduct by Moishe's had a huge puddle in it, complete with a stalled car. I think it was "just" rain. Didn't hear of any water main breaks.

Don't know where you live, but the southern end of Grove was under considerable water. Most of the houses on the east side of the street were pumping water into the street and I walked by the Taqueria just as someone opened the corner door and there was quite a bit of standing water inside. They were busy trying to deal with it. Marin and Grand intersection was under a lot of water as well.

Hoboken wet weather pump station designed to relieve flooding nears completion

Published: Monday, June 13, 2011, 3:00 AM
By Vishal Persaud/The Jersey Journal

The North Hudson Sewerage Authority is nearing completion of the wet weather pump station that will help alleviate the city?s flooding problems.

The authority has installed two large wet weather pumps along Observer Highway near Washington Street that will pump about 100 gallons of water during heavy rainfall.
?It?s been a major problem that has gone on way too long. We?re thrilled that were almost near the finish line,? Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said.

The mayor thanked Sewerage Authority Chairman Richard Wolff and Executive Director Frederic Pocci for the project?s completion.

?While we don?t expect the pump station to solve all Hoboken?s flooding problems, it should go a long way to alleviating the worst of them,? Wolff said in a release from the authority.

Hoboken Councilwoman Theresa Castellano welcomed the news of the installed pumps. Her ward has suffered from flooded streets for years.

?I?m glad to see it come to fruition,? she said.

The authority planned and paid for most of the $17.6 million project. Sen. Robert Menendez and U.S. Rep. Albio Sires, D-West New York, secured a $5 million federal grant that also went toward the project.

The project broke ground April 2010. Although the pumps are installed, the station won?t come on-line until later this year.

The authority still needs to work on lines that will carry the water from the station to the Hudson River before the station can open.

?We expect to have the pump station on-line and operative before the end of the year, if everything continues to go well,? Wolff said.

No power lost around Lincoln Park. We were coming home last night on 1&9, and there was a LOT of standing water at 440 and Communipaw. Nice and sunny morning, though!

I do hope you call the town and sue you neighbor for the damage of 3inches. Working sump pumps at all times in all homes with adjacent walls should be law. We have a derelict neighbor, and always have to do more because they do nothing. Animals in the ceiling, flooding..extra shoving..
If any of you remember me..yes I am trying to get OUT of here, damn taxes gallop.

HORRIBLE! I have two neighbors next to me who do not live in their homes and are doing gut renos. They tore through the cement slabs in their houses down through the dirt. Therefore, they have lakes and feet of water that gets so high it seeps in like a running hose through the opening around my heating pipes. Last night, it was so bad the fire dept came and pumped them out since it was a major hazard. We got about 3 inches which was considerably less than it could have been. I have to give kudos to the JCFD, they were absolutely awesome to us and didn't leave until it was under control....

How's everyone been doing with these two recent storms? We suffered badly this time last year, but so far, so good with our new basement system. Be interested to hear if others are OK.

Knock wood, our place has not had additional flooding since the rager mid-March. That being said, we are a middle floor unit and still had rain in our bedroom via the nonworking fireplace. Wasn't sewer water as it was coming in from above, but it was dark brown and smelly.

My ground floor apartment on the corner of Grove St and Grand got a foot of water throughout in the first storm. The water first came up and overflowed from the tub, toilet, and sump pump hole-and then all at once was coming in everywhere! Really horrible, JC sewer water.Traumatic.
The elevation of Liberty Harbor development no doubt exacerbates a long standing problem here. But how can you afford to fix the city after the politicians have taken their cut?

Neither had anything to do with flooding in JC. The MUA estimated it would cost over $150 million to improve our downtown sewer/water lines which have 8" clay pipes. The MUA has nada budget. Thank Brett Schundler for setting up the MUA when he was Mayor.
I'm really feeling for all who's basements are flooding... Hoping things get better soon. But in the meantime...here's something to listen to and you can dedicate it to whom ever you see fit. Enjoy...just saying...

N.J. storm causes flooding in Jersey City

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
March 30, 2010, 12:50PM

Resized Image

A car stranded in the flood waters at Marin Boulevard and 18th Street in Jersey City has to wait for a tow truck.
Some of the Jersey City streets that are known to have flooding problems are under water again this morning, officials are reporting.

A car has been stranded at 18th Street and Marin Boulevard on the Jersey City-Hoboken border, Fire Director Armando Roman said.

And two cars got stuck in flooding under the New Jersey Turnpike Extension at Montgomery and Merseles streets, he said.

Routes 1&9 between Duncan and Communipaw avenues is closed because of some deep puddles.

Are you aware of other flooding problems? If so, please post comments here.

The area has been pounded by rain since last night. Among other problems it's causing in the region, delays at airports are ranging from a half hour to more than two hours, the Star-Ledger is reporting.

I too have water coming up through the floor (again) and it seems like also through the wall that goes out to our backyard. Does anyone know if there is anything that can be done (fixing the tiles, caulking etc) that will prevent this from happening in the future? I'm not sure how big a job this could be!
