Yeah, it doesn't make sense that the place is never full, when similar old school types of places like 2nd Street Bakery have lines out the door. It especially doesn't make sense to me since the 2nd Street Bakery is much more out of the way than Sava.

I'm eating a cheese blintz from Sava as I type. Two for $5 on Wednesdays and out of this world delicious.

Yaga's (the owner's) chicken meatballs are crazy good. If you haven't already tried them, have some with rice or kasha and vegetables and you will be hooked (all for a very reasonable price too)! She is the Polish grandmother I never had!

What time/days are they open. I've planned to eat there twice and have found it closed. Its possible I went there the same days. I've been craving homestyle pierogies for days.

So f'ing good. Please people, if you appreciate good homestyle food, go there. If the place ever folded, I'd be devastated.

Thanks for bumping this up, JC123. It is a good reminder, and getting to be that time of year for comfort food. Think I will stop by tonight.

Have recently been trying Sava on Grove Street and I am consistently blown away at how terrific and affordable her food is...pierogies, chicken meatballs, stuffed cabbage, chicken stuffed with spinach, potato pancakes, cheese blintzes, I could go on and on. I recently had a small get together and ordered apple blintzes from Sava to serve as dessert. People went crazy over them and there was not one left at the end of the meal! If you have not tried Sava, I highly recommend it (and it seems a lot of other people on this thread feel the same way). We need to support good restaurants like this one in JC!!!!Quote:

Now I have to try the cold borscht too. Geez... 500 stuffed cabbages? I knew she made a bunch for the festival in JC today, but wow... that IS a lot! Maybe throngs of folks will show up to the event and she'll sell out? I sure hope so -- someone so sweet and hardworking deserves to make a pretty penny. What I'm digging is that I often crave Sava-style home cooking on a Sunday -- the one day of the week her place is closed. So I'm stoked that I can head down to the celebration to get my fix. I wonder if any other food vendors will be there? Like the folks from Europa? I'm ready to indulge!

When I was at Savas today - the owner in passing mentioned that Tanya (from Tanya's restaurant) was in town for the festival this weekend. I asked her if she knew how to make Tanya's cold borscht. She said she did and happily takes requests from customers who come in for specific off menu things.
** also she will be at the polish festival on Sunday with tons of food she's been making all this week nonstop. She mentioned something about 500 stuffed cabbages.. wow.

Sava does make a cold borscht, the virtues of which she was extolling the last time I was there. However, since beets fly through my system with nary a pause at the intervening digestive organs, I passed.

Does anybody have Tanya's cold borscht soup recipe?
She used to have it hanging in the window years ago. I tried to make it at home and it came out ok but not as good as Tanya's. Does Sava make this soup? It's cold beet soup with shredded beets, shredded cucumber, chopped dill, sour cream and hard boiled egg, salt & pepper to taste. I found it on a website listed as a Ukrainian soup, but like I said it's not as good as Tanya's and seems like it's missing something. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Btw, Sava's perogis rock!

From what I understand Sava was near the Courthouses on Newark originally. The lease was getting too expensive and the owner was forced to relocate.
The new location does not have the great foot traffic of the previous location so it would be great if everyone would help keep a Mom and Pop in business by referring and recommending as they have in this thread. *** It's not the most attractive place to look at but the food is fantastic. It never seems to be as busy as a place this good should be. I for one will go here more often now. I think its important to reward a local business doing a good job so they can prosper. Many here, myself included bitch about things but in this case nothing but love for Savas from me***

When I dropped by Sava on Friday to pick up dinner, Jadwiga mentioned that she'll be cooking again this year for Jersey City's 7th Annual Polish Festival.
I'm told the event is open to the general public and will be held in Downtown Jersey City's Paulus Hook neighborhood on Sunday, August 30, 2009 from 12:00PM to 7:00PM on Washington Street (Between Sussex Street & Grand Street). For more information about the celebration, check out the announcement at JCHeights.com or this JCList post.

The meatballs, pierogies, stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, and sauerkraut were DELICIOUS! We got the combination platter, which allowed us to try a bit of everything. Highly recommended, and a great addition to the eclectic eateries on Grove St!

I swung by Sava on Grove Street for some Polish takeout this evening and I'm really glad I did.
The Stuffed Cabbage was particularly tasty tonight and the Sauerkraut-Filled Pierogies were outstanding. Jadwiga, the doting owner and chef, even snuck a complimentary dessert into my bag when I was digging my wallet out of my pocket. It's that sort of sweet service and great food that keeps me coming back -- and her prices are always super reasonable.
