no, not the cactus taco and avocado tostada. youre referring to the beans containing lard. i figured that out when i tried ordering a vegetarian burrito there.

Obviously, lard isn't vegetarian. Spider is correct though because I have tried to order other items and they've informed me what is and isn't veg. If you ask them they will tell you what is made without lard.

I second this. I bet we can talk skinner's loft into adding this to their menu. maybe we should make a tofu scramble petition.

My only issue with this is its reeeeaaalllyyy easy to make a crappy tofu scramble. I feel like that's how people get turned off to tofu in general, they had it once and it was tasteless and then they never try it again. I would trust Skinner's Loft to do this however! I think that's the only non-vegetarian restaurant I've ever been to that has actually done tofu right. I know it's not JC but if you ever get the chance I highly recommend Su in Edgewater (by the Trader Joes). Great veg restaurant and wonderful service, brought plenty meat eaters there who absolutely loved it and wanted to go again.

This thread curently has 7800+ views. I wish that local restaurants would wake up to the fact that veg heads re out there and interested/eager to spend.

Sadly, we don't eat out much in this town - a veggie burger isn't my idea of a fun dining experience as I eat at least one/week in my own kitchen.

Restaurant Week? Tried to support our local restaurants and really couldn't - seemed as though there were 3 prix fixe dinners to choose from: meat, chicken or fish.

C'mon restaurant owners - you can do better than that!

Taqueria- I absolutely love the cactus tacos, avocado tostada, and occasionally they have a special (at least once a week I think- I've had it several times) that is a mushrooms fried quesadilla- it's phenomenal.

I really want to try Hard Grove because veggie friendly cuban food is unheard of but I just can't bring myself to go after all the crappy reviews.

Another favorite is second st bakery- eggplant special is AMAZING and I'm pretty sure there is some sort of crack in their pizza bread logs that make them taste so good. Also like another said above, the stuffed rolls are awesome.

My favorite Indian place to order from is Pathara Junction- they deliver pretty late (I believe 11?) and I've loved everything I've gotten from there.

Everything i've had at Hard Grove has been disgusting, and i keep going back and trying 'cause i want it to be good so bad. i love cuban food and that place is so close to my house, but it ALWAYS lets me down. If you want good Cuban you gotta head to the mall area and go to Azucar

Good Veggie stuff that my fiance and i like are:

Tanquaria - great fish tacos and they also have tortas with avocado (the only good mexican around the grove st area)
Merchant - great veggie burger and veggie loaf. their hummus flat bread is pretty good too
Subia - great food all around, just kind of expensive
Ibbys - wonderful falafel
Raaz (indian place by the mall) they have really good veggie options and tasty food
Its Greek to Me - not the greatest food in the world, but they have good hummus and always have veggie options (being byob doesnt hurt either)
Amelias Bistro - again a little expensive but has a really good eggplant sandwich

hope that helps

Someone asked about hard groves veggie selection. They make a great fake chicken quesadilla, and the vegetarian gloria estefan is an awesome sandwich with fake chicken and plantains. just have to know when you go to hard grove that you will be there for awhile. but there are plenty of vegetarian options that taste good.

A few that may not have been mentioned:

Suprisingly, Soul Flavors on Grove St & Bay has a "meatless vegetarian strudel" that is very good.

Also, the new owner of 3 Boys Pizza & Falafel on Monmouth between 3rd & 4th has added a number of vegetarian and vegan options to the menu. He can make a vegan version of just about anything on the menu--pizza included!

As far as vegan brunch options, Subia's on Jersey Ave & Wayne has a number of choices. Service isn't quick, but the folks there are focussed on the organic/vegetarian/vegan lifestyle and can take care of your needs easily.

Nicole's on Jersey and Columbus is a West Indian/Caribbean/Guyanese restaurant. You can get lots of different vegetarian dishes.

I had lunch there today. Chickpeas with rice and peas with a side of calaloo. Calaloo is a vegetable common in the caribbean but they also had platanos, spinach, potatoes, cabbage, mac & cheese.

Just go in there and point out what you would like. It is family run and they will be happy to tell you what is vegetarian. Just put together a plate of what you want and enjoy.

The hot sauce here is incredible.

Thanks for the suggestions! We went to Skinner's Loft on Friday and my veggie friend thoroughly enjoyed the tofu dish. And the panna cotta was great for dessert. Overall, she was very impressed.

Also good: Subias. Great little place with a good menu. Try the "rib" salad. Amazing!

Seconding Skinner's Loft- Their nori crusted tofu is GREAT. Their pumpkin polenta is good as well.

Nice idea for a thread. We're vegetarians too and the offerings in JC restaurants are somewhat limited for sure. Here's some things we've tried:

Skinner's Loft has a great baked tofu dish on their menu which is delicious and also a meal where you don't feel like you're eating something 'demeatifitied'.

Madame Claude has a decent vegetable and goat cheese crepe.

Ibby's Falafel is serviceable, but nothing more than that, despite all the fuss it seems to get. Theres much better falafel in NYC.

There's a lot half-assed veggie burgers and nominal veg options on there. That said, White Star has a very nice portobello sandwich. The veggie sandwich at Iron Monkey was without doubt the greasiest sandwich I ever had, give that a miss.

I know a bunch of you JC restaurant owners are on the boards here. Why not take a look at your menus through vegetarian eyes? Almost all of them show very little imagination.

For the vegans- I totally forgot but was reminded today when I went- Wonder Bagels has tofu cream cheese and it's totally delicious. I'm not even vegan but it's yummy and I generally try to avoid dairy so I always get it. They have veggie and scallion options.

i'm pretty new to the area too, but i've been getting food from Parkside Bistro. they have a bunch of vegetarian dishes as well as a few vegan dishes on the menu. they deliver too. i really like the potato dumplings in a tomato onion sauce (with a bunch of fresh herbs) - comes with rice. very tasty! the falafel are really good too and their hummus is the best! i really recommend this place. good portions and the prices are very reasonable. it's located by the Hamilton Park. they menu is online but i think they are still working on the website

good luck

Thanks for bringing this thread up again- I wanted to know if any other veggies had checked out Hard Grove Cafe's selection? I read terrible reviews but has anyone gone recently? I never see veg options at a cuban place so I desperately want it to be good but all the reviews I read are horrible. :(

I've been looking for a similar thread but couldn't find one..

Can anyone recommend a good vegetarian restaurant besides Indian restaurants on Newark Ave.? Or at least, a restaurant that has a fairly good veggie menu?

Thanks, guys.

I eat out all the time, and there are plenty of options. Fire & Oak has a great vegetarian sushi & flat bread pizza, the Merchant has a fantastic veggie loaf with puree cauliflower, Subia's serves vegan and vegetarian lunch, and the small plates at Bar Majestic can make a complete meal any time. Also, ibby's is great for an informal meal (best falafel EVER), Basic has tons of vegetarian options, and the Hard Grove (if you can get past the long wait and terrible service) has a veggie steak sandwich I adore. Add the asian (vietnamese, thai, japanese, indian, pakistani, and chinese - unfortunately there's not much vegetarian filipino food) options, pizza, pasta, salads, and creative ordering at all the other places, and you're good to go!!! More options are always better, but I do think JC (at least the downtown portion) has been very kind to us veg-heads.

I think location doesn't matter all that much - you need to be a destination - look at Madame Claudes' at Brunswick & Newark Ave! Keep your costs low! Here are two vegetarian places that have been going for decades -- We'll be there!

Keep it reasonable and people will come!

There are not any restaurants that I know of in Jersey City that cater specifically to vegans or vegetarians. When I want to eat out I go into the city to Red bamboo, Food Swings, Kate's Joint and a few others. Your best bet is to google vegan eateries in NYC. If you find anything in JC please repost!

thanks

I was thinking the same thing.

If you want vegan, you can snoop around for Indian at Journal Square or find a Rastafarian place I guess.

Wild Fusion or just about any other place in JC that offers vegetarian cuisine doesn't care that you're a vegan. The veggies will be mixed up with with the meat somewhere along the way. If you want vegan food in JC, prepare it at home, or better yet, open your own restaurant.

Although this restaurant is not vegetarian, they do offer vegetarian choices on the menu and they have some really tasty dishes. They deliver as well.
It's Greek To Me at 194 Newark Ave in Jersey City.
(201)-222-0844

I go there about twice a week. Great food!
