The sad ramblings from the talentless about the talented.

Gil was no role model, but like many of the other finest musicians, take Dylan for instance, another admitted heroin user, he never strove to be one. He simply wanted to craft what he wanted considered an important message into beautiful music, and in doing so found fans the world-over. Gil wouldn't advocate that everyone should walk in his shoes, but the world is more enlightened place for his poetry and music.

RIP Gil.

Only on these boards could someone accuse someone of being racist and imply homophobia to belittle them. Nice work everyone.

I don't get why everyone is getting so down about this place. Ok, so it's not what you personally want, but it's great that something halfway decent is opening at all. There's a 100 other empty stores for your next favorite thing to open up in.

Congrats to Barcade, I'll be bringing my beard and an ironic t-shirt in for a game or 5 of Galaga for sure.

Ok if I made a Vegetarian option, but charged it like an expensive protein would you pay?

Trambone, I'm not sure if you're asking me as a vegetarian:

a) Will I turn a blind eye to you while your rip me off for dinner because you think i have special needs as a diner?
or
b) did i chose to be a vegetarian because I don't like paying for meat with my dinner.

but either way, it doesn't really sound like you get it.

Just to be clear, personally speaking, although I suspect I speak for several others from above, at most of the restaurants I go to in JC the options for vegetarians are very often fewer, less imaginative and more poorly executed than similar level restaurants around the metro area. If I go to Arkansas I'm not surprised if the veg option is poor, in Downtown JC, that seems surprising. That's all anyone is saying here.

I honestly couldn't get into the business machinations of if its "profitable" to have veg-friendly dishes on your menu, but it seems that it works fine for 95% of the restaurants in the metro area. If you're looking for an example of a place in JC, I know there's a good amount of love for the Tofu dish on the menu at Skinners. It's no more or less expensive than any other entree, but its a success not because it was made for vegetarians but because it's a tasty dish that just happens to not contain meat. Personally I choose to go spend my money there rather than other places purely because they seem to get it.

The point of this post is to say openly to any restaurateurs in JC, which I know several frequent and post on these boards, is that there's a bunch of potential customers out here and we feel underserved, if you'd like to serve us, we'll come spend our cash. That doesn't seem like such a scary proposition.

No Plaiche is dead on. Veg options in JC restaurants are almost all poor with no real reason. Vegetarians aren't asking for separate restaurants or anything beyond 'normal' restaurants looking at their menu and adding one or two imaginative choices that don't include meat or fish. With few exceptions the options in many of the mainstay restaurants, at least in downtown JC, are about as creative as a frozen veggie burger and moreover even when you do order them they are poorly prepared.

I don't understand the comments being so negative, no-one's threatening carnivores here, just asking that JC restaurants might be a little more considerate for the increasing number of people that like the occasional meatless dinner.

Plaiche there is also separate thread in the restaurant forums with some recommendations for the few places that do have good options.

Many thanks to the organizers of the film festival. It was a really enjoyable evening last night. We came to see the Youssou N'Dour movie and it was a very interesting story of the reuniting of West African music and Jazz . The music was so beautiful and the message an important one.

A tip of the hat to St Paul's Church and Uptown Crew for pulling this off where our city's museum so sadly failed.

Hey there,
It sounds like you're looking for Fredy. He's usually selling his stuff on Fridays during Creative Grove. Last time I was there, I asked him for a card. He has an etsy store. You can access it here http://www.etsy.com/shop/churoncalla or email him at Fredy@churoncalla.com.

Hope you find what you're looking for. I love his jewelry too. If you don't see what you want, tell him and he'll make it for you.

Nice idea for a thread. We're vegetarians too and the offerings in JC restaurants are somewhat limited for sure. Here's some things we've tried:

Skinner's Loft has a great baked tofu dish on their menu which is delicious and also a meal where you don't feel like you're eating something 'demeatifitied'.

Madame Claude has a decent vegetable and goat cheese crepe.

Ibby's Falafel is serviceable, but nothing more than that, despite all the fuss it seems to get. Theres much better falafel in NYC.

There's a lot half-assed veggie burgers and nominal veg options on there. That said, White Star has a very nice portobello sandwich. The veggie sandwich at Iron Monkey was without doubt the greasiest sandwich I ever had, give that a miss.

I know a bunch of you JC restaurant owners are on the boards here. Why not take a look at your menus through vegetarian eyes? Almost all of them show very little imagination.
