Where can I get live plants for fresh water fish tanks in JC, Hoboken or Bayonne, preferably without driving?

We recently got a dog and I must say I am SHOCKED by how expensive the dog poo pickup bags are. I got my first set at Canis Minor, but even PetSmart ones aren't that cheap. After 20 minutes of searching, I found a "janitorial supplies" website and was able to order a set of 2,000 small trashbags for $16 (compared to 240 for $16 on Petsmart.com) That is savings of about $130. I'll let you guys know if they are sturdy enough or if I just threw away $16...

i buy bulk packs of them at walmart sometimes...a little cheaper. also, those bags that the newspapers and ads that conveniently end up the porch work well too. i use my shopping bags to scoop the cat litter, but i don't really like using them to pick up dog poop since they tend to have holes from transporting the bags and items that poke through them.

Just for your own info - Hoboken Fish and Pet closed a couple months ago - the one on the corner of Monroe.

Ah, thanks for the tip. I'll look it up.

As for bags, I try to buy Biobags (biodegradable bags) online and recycle plastic shopping bags. You can get Biobags in bulk for pretty cheap. I think the place i used last time was called Dirtworks.

There's Riverview Bark, but it's in the heights. I wish it was in walking distance from downtown.

poo bags are nice to have but....I save EVERY plastic bag whether it's for groceries or a six-pack. Those black bags that they give at the liquor store on Coles work great. And they're free. Just saying....

I heard there was something pet-related (supplies? grooming?) opening in the Hamilton Square building next to Hamilton Park, but I don't know if that's still the case.

Would LOVE a self-service dog wash. I think it would do very well in the HP neighborhood, where a high percentage of people seem to have dogs.

I've passed these Hoboken stores, but never checked them out. Might be worth a visit.

Village Tropical has a great selection of organic/natural/holistic food (for cats & dogs at least), brands that you'd never find in a Petco or Pet Smart. They don't even carry the crap that Shoprite and Pathmark sell. I've also found their prices to be more than reasonable. I agree about the fish situation though, not up to par.

so tired of driving all the way to long island's aquarium adventure everytime i need to pick up some fish/supplies. Any fishkeeper hobbyist out there? where is a good aquarium shop around here with disease-free tanks and good stock of supplies, in jc/hoboken/bayonne

Village tropical on newark is a joke, they have nothing a serious fishkeeper would touch, and their tanks are terrible with disease ridden and dead fish. I remember they mixed some puffer which are aggressive not to mention brackish with rasboras, that went real well....corpses everywhere. Never went back...

I will do pet store runs for $5 to any of the local pet stores (and even to petsmart and petco), aside from dog walking/pet sitting.

Some of my clients in downtown and the Heights with cars but little time get deliveries from "Just for Pets" in Weehawken. For orders of $25 and up, delivery is free. They have large (13.2 oz.) cans of Evo and Felidae catfood also, which works for me. I also buy 13.2 oz. cans of Petgard from two health food stores in Hoboken, Hoboken Farmboy and Basics, and until very recently, when some of my cats developed a sudden aversion to Wellness after years of gobbling it down, 13.2 oz cans of Wellness from Village Tropical. You can get good deals on litter at Target's.

+2!

Hate this place. Just had to turn away a poor family that wanted me to care for their little puppy this weekend :(
I require Giardia testing for any dog in my care that uses pads. Needless to say, being a Pet Company Newport Mall
purchased pup she was Giardia positive and I was unable to provide boarding for her :(
I also second the Canis Minor suggestion for food and supplies. Folks may have their issues with the place but I must give credit to them for requiring Giardia testing for their day care and boarding dogs. Knowing a lot of their client dogs are purchased at the mall and the Newport dog run is a swamp of Giardia, they started this testing years ago. Wise move, and something no other day care or boarding facility requires. Good Job Canis!

Canis Minor is your place if you're looking for high quality pet supplies. They have a huge supply of the super premium brands as well as raw. They're also very community oriented - they have bulletin boards for pet related postings and are huge supporters of Liberty Humane Society.

The Pet Company in Newport Mall is the devil. Not only do they sell ridiculous amounts of puppymill puppies but it's crowded and filthy and usually filled with screaming children. Your money is spent better elsewhere.

I really want a local shop that focuses on organic pet food.

I know this is sounds nuts to a lot of people..... but I think it is significantly better than the general food brands out there.

I need to check out the Newport place... most of the time I buy my food from petfooddirect.com - I usually catch a good deal, but deal with UPS causes a level of irritation I cant stand.

For a community with a lot of animals, the pet store selection is pretty dismal. Without a car, the only ones you can really get to are Village Tropical, The Pet Company (in the Newport Mall) and Canis Minor. With a car there is also Petland Discount on 440. You can try taking the lightrail to either Hoboken or Bayonne. Hoboken has Beowoof (on 5th) and Cornerstone Pets (on 9th). They are both a bit of hike if you are getting a large bag of litter. Bayonne has Colonial House of Pets but they are also a bit of a hike from the lightrail stop on 22nd. You could always try getting heavier things delivered. I believe both Canis Minor and Beowoof do deliveries.

Target and Path Mark has supplies for cheap(er).

Don't even get me started on Canis Minor. Great selection, but the grooming service is atrocious.

There is Canis Minor in Newport - they have a pretty wide selection of higher quality foods and treats. They have litter too, but you're probably better off at Target. I use Feline Pine, and that's always the cheapest place to get it.

Just moved in and needed cat litter. Went to Village Tropical Fish & Supply Popular to get "Yesterday's News". Oh my, that's much more than I am used to paying ($14 instead of $9). Fetch-It seems to be out of business? We don't have a car, are there any other options in downtown? Shop Rite?

Thanks!
