No kidding - although you cant expect the police to be everywhere at all times. It was only time before this happened - the longer we went without incident, the greater the chances of something bad happening.

Bottom line is times are tough - people are losing their jobs - and desperation produces bad choices/behavior. This renews my concerns of night time safety.

This is more terrible news for JC. Unfortuantely, an increase in crime is hear to stay for a while.

Something has to change and fast. I think for starters healy and his crew gotstogo.

My condolences to the family of this man.

RIP

It was just on the Local ABC news.

Very sad.

Very nice family.

A shame.

When the condo next to the scene of the murder had it's doors kicked in a couple of years ago the police had no interest in the schools tapes. The Captain said tapes like that are useless for identifying perps. The robbery victims had to fight for weeks to even get access to them, they were outraged at the PD's lack of follow through.

Sad to hear this news. This was a random choice hit, the little run down candy stores are the first on the hit list. Where are you going to run to ?? Whether it was Downtown J.C. or else where it would not have mattered. These low lifes will go to where the money is, soon it will be any Mom & Pop money generating place of opportunity. The economic times are coming to terms with their neighboring environment. The Have Nots are filled with anger, upset that they are only able to ride in the bottom of the ship. They are not satisfied with just the purse they have to kill as well.

Yeah how much could he possibly have in his cash box!

Very sad stuff!

He was a really sweet, gentle soul of a guy. I went in the Laundromat this morning when the cops brought his family in to talk to them. It was so incredibly awful.

Hope they get those sociopathic bastards. I guess they think they're big men for gunning down a nice old guy trying to make life better for his family. Freaking cowards.

I live 1/2 block away. This is crazy. The murder is an abomination but even a robbery makes no sense. Why rob a tiny convenience store in broad daylight in the morning when the register is at it's lowest? Could it be some thug felt "dissed" by the owner and returned to show him what a "man" he was?

Man Killed In Jersey City Botched Robbery

Tuesday, 27 January 2009 12:18PM

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A Jersey City store owner was reportedly shot and killed Tuesday in an apparent botched robbery.

The shooting took place on Coles Street in Jersey City at about 9:50 a.m.

Initial reports indicate nothing was taken from the bodega-type store.

According to a published report, a witness on the scene said the store was being robbed when the owner was killed, however authorities have not yet confirmed that account.

The man killed has not yet been named and police are still on the scene investigating.

1010 WINS reporter Steve Sandberg is on his way to the scene of the shooting.

I've always thought the blocks around McNair are a bit safer because McNair has multiple security cameras set up around the outside of the building. Hopefully they caught something useful.

That is horrible and I feel for the family. They were always extremly nice and my alternative to Christos for coffee & cigarettes. 9:50am?! 2 Blocks from the police station?? Half a block from McNair. WTF?! i passed it at about 15 minutes before it happened. Hope they find the scumbags.

As always we should be diligent. This crime was horrible and maybe unpreventable but we have to keep our eyes open. In my experience criminals are stupid and often obvious in their behavior. If you see ANYTHING in your neighborhood that seems suspicious call the cops. It is amazing how many people go through their day oblivious to their surroundings. Protect yourself, protect your neighbors and do the right thing. All the news tells us that these types of crimes are on the rise. 50% rise in robberies on the NYC subways etc. You don't have to carry a gun or jump into a dangerous situation. It just takes a simple phonecall. 201-547-5477 is the number to the JCPD non-emergency number for those times your not sure but want to be safe. Our thoughts and prayers are with this man and his family.

He was one of the nicest men in downtown. I feel so badly for this family. I was just in there this morning to buy the papers. I'm stunned. My prayers are with them.

Horrible. Just horrible.

A shooting on Coles at 9:50AM... robbery? Seems like an awful dangerous spot for a scumbag to do something like that. There are people all over the place that time of morning. Cops, kids included.

I guess McNair locked down?

It is sad. I totally agree. It's also very scary. I don't think expressing the sentiments of people who may be scared away by this, is at all insensitive.

But I won't be so insensitive as to respond to any more of your comments out of concern for detracting from the thread.

It was pretty insensitive. Probably a lot of us in HP know this guy and he was alive less than 2 hours ago. This is very sad.
