Thank you for the information, KM_Andi.
I will probably stop by the cafe today, or tomorrow, to look into the class schedule.

I took a beginner class to get myself restarted back in March. I think it was something like $65 for 2 classes that were about 2-hours long. Of course, it might've changed since then. The class was awesome and I've been an addict ever since. There weren't any men in my particular class, but there are a few in my knitting group and I think it's a guy who teaches the crochet class. After watching me for the last 6 months, my husband is picking it up now too. So they're out there. :)
I dunno about schedules, but they send out emails to their list when a new schedule comes out. I think you can join it on the website, but I joined it in the store.

Does anyone know the current schedule for knitting classes? Long (LONG!) ago I taught myself knitting (using that great knitting bible known as Vogue Knitting, the book, not the magazines) and then stopped doing it after a year. As a male, it was a rather odd hobby to pick up, but it was actually fun and relaxing, and I am thinking that maybe I can pick it up again.
If any of you have taken classes, have you seen any other males in there that were actually knitting? Any information on schedules and pricing would be greatly appreciated, as the website didn't have information. Thanks!

i have stopped going there because it was never consistent! i want to support my local businesses but i can't justify wasting my money on a bad product.
i got cupcakes there once and they were great - and then i got them there another time and they were so stale i couldn't even eat them. sometimes they have lots of snacks, but then i went in recently on a Saturday morning and they had nothing. they may have just opened but it was still a disappointment. Is consistency with good service, reliable hours, and good food too much to ask?

That's my biggest pet peeve so we don't go there. We want consistency with hours and coffee on the way to work. What I realized though is that they have people who frequent there for reasons obviously besides that. So awesome a local business is succeeding and making it work without that morning crowd. I'll keep getting my coffee at Basic but I am very happy they have found a crowd that can support them. They contribute to the community and give us a great vibe and that makes me happy!

What really bothers me about this place is that I always want to get a coffee before work and the girl never has the store open by 9:00 AM. Honestly, if I ran a cafe I would be sure it was open at 7 or 8am to maximize business. Seriously though, how hard is it to have a pot of coffee on at 9AM?
But yes, I agree with everyone else, aside from late openings the place is great!

I agree the place can get crowded but it is definitely one of my favorites. On the seating note, did you check the garden? It is very relaxing on nice days.

Stockinette is at 581 Jersey Ave/corner of 3rd St.
Before this it was Gabagoolz and before that the infamous Melt.

got a cappuccino here the other day. really good. just didnt love how there were a whole bunch of people sitting around with laptops and no room for me and my wife to sit down. there was even a table with just a couple laptop bags on it, and when we asked around to see if perhaps they could be moved, no one owned up to the bags being theirs. kind of annoying.

The person who does most of the baking for Stockinette is Chef Marco. He was pastry chef at Lighthorse Tavern for 5 years. He lives right around the corner from Stockinette so these are locally made treats. Everyone who goes there knows how good the food is.

their red velvet cupcakes are awesome! wish they'd bring back the old chicken pot pie recipe, though. the new one's good, but not mouth-wateringly great like it used to be.

I just bought a profiterol (cream puff, if you prefer) at the Stockinette. I think it was one of the best profiterols I have ever had. The cream was incredibly fresh, and pastry on the outside was delicious. If anyone is craving a dessert, I suggest you get to the Stockinette on Jersey Ave. And no, I don't own it or work there.

If you knit and have a cat or a dog...
These aren't just lovely portraits of people posing with their pets, but look a little closely and you'll see that the owners are wearing sweaters and vests that resemble the fur of their dogs. And they should because they were literally made from them. Below is a series of photographs (an ongoing project) by photographer Erwan Fichou of people posing with their beautiful dogs, sporting canine couture... actual sweaters and vests made from the hair (fur?) of their own pet dogs. http://ifitshipitshere.blogspot.com/2 ... -portraits-of-people.html Mail Order Custom Handspun Yarn from Your Very Important Pets! http://www.vipfibers.com/about-vip-fibers.htm I like them!

Has anybody been to this cute little place yet. It has a total Central Perk vibe to it. Great coffee, breakfast breads, cupcakes and pastries. Comfy chairs, free wireless and the best part of all is the Garden. The owners are great, the place is welcoming. After Sweet Priscilla went Pepto Bismol pink it is hard to stomach a cup of coffee in there. Welcome to our neighborhood

Yup, I made a baby blanket out of a cheapish cotton/acrylic blend and ended up spending around $30 in yarn. Plus knitting your own stuff is only cheap if your time is worth nothing. It is very rewarding, though, especially to have a sweater that no one else has. :D

Knitting can actually be pretty expensive. The good wooden needles aren't cheap, and good yarn costs a lot. But it is rewarding if you're good at it (I'm not...wah, wah...)

With the economy the way it is, we should all go there and learn some knitting. I have a feeling being able to knit your own clothing is going to come in very handy really soon.

I went in there twice recently, Sat to buy all their chocolate chip cookies for a party baked less than 4 hours when I was there! They were a hit at the party too.
The owners are both nice people and I saw several women knitting while I drank my coffee and ate some terrific muffins. My friend who knits and crochets loves the place and plans on taking some advanced classes when they get going. Highly recommended!

According to the Craft Yarn Council of America, the number of women knitters in the United States age 25?35 increased 150% in the two years between 2002 and 2004.
Looks like a decent industry to get into.... I don't even knit, and I went there yesterday for a nice cup of coffee, some pastries and to enjoy the beautiful weather out back on their patio while reading a magazine.

This is my new place for coffee on the way to work every morning. Friendly staff. Nice having another option for a coffee and snack. The cup cakes are amazing too.

When i stopped in on Sunday night, the owner said they she would be starting up classes soon. And very soon the website would be up. The owner said to sign up for the email mailing list on the website to get updates about upcoming events.

I went in today and had a very good coffee-- much better than Basic, it must be said. The garden in back is really nice, as are the people working there. It was evening and there were a few people in there, but when I passed earlier while walking my dog, it was empty as far as I could tell. I wonder if it would be worth it to them to close in the middle of the day on weekdays.
Of course, they do have wifi, which is a plus for those of us who work from home and need a change of scenery.

I have never knitted before, but it sounds actually pretty cool and relaxing! I wonder if they will give knitting lessons. I would sign up and give it a try!
