Like most gun prohibitionists, you have no idea what you are talking about. I encourage you to go to the JCPD, apply for a firearms license, and come back and tell us how easy that process would have been for "kids"; never mind the more difficult process that would doubtless be in place for carry licenses even under a "shall issue" law.

I am guessing that the victim or a witness would have to file a report in order to substantiate any charges. Usually a cop can file a report/charges if he/she sees the crime. If not then an actual victim's or witness ' statement or overwhelming evidence will set the wheels in motion toward conviction. If they didn't do this than people/victims could just make stuff up to cover another crime or to set-up an innocent person. Remember Susan Smith?

So did the cops show up or not? If they did show up why would the victim have to file a police report in order for the police department to acknowledge the event?

Is there a curfew in place in Jersey City. If so, then why wasn't it enforced and the perhaps held liable for breaches!

This is why we need to legalize assault weapons with 100 round magazines. 50 thugs with bats and chains would be quick work.

Where on Newark Avenue was this?
I think I would have heard about 50 kids fighting with weapons on Newark Avenue. How did they all get away? In a tour bus?

WARRIORS.... COME OUT AND PLAYEEEE For real though, motorcycles, dog poop, barking dogs, parking tickets and no mention of a riot???? Have you ever seen 50 people fighting at the same time with weapons???? That should have been front page on the NY times let alone the budget Jersey Journal. I smell a bullshit story. They are giving you a fake excuse for the cops sitting on their asses and taking 30 mins to arrive on the scene. If it walks like a duck......

A lot of stuff that happens in downtown NEVER gets reported for some reason, but if anything happens in my part of the city it's front page news. The only thing I see in the newspaper about downtown blatant advertisements for real estate. That's why I think that the Jersey Journal is the biggest pile of garbage in town.

Here is a little more information after I followed up with the East District commumity relations officer, Dina Reilly.
She responded to the question of a slow response time as well as the issue of reporting the crime: "Unfortunately, there were two additional street fights occurring at the same time as the [assault in VVP] (one on Newark Ave. and the other on C.C. Dr.), thus the response time. FYI... one street fight consisted of a crowd of 50 people fighting with bats/weapons. I do not believe a report was filed on the [assault in VVP], thus no information on victim or actor(s), however, I will look further into. Please encourage the victim and witnesses to file a police report. P.O. Dina Reilly Jersey City Police Department East District Community Relations Officer" So if you are a witness and you did file a report, contact the East District office right away to verify that you did report this crime. If you did not file a report and witnessed the assault please do for the benefit of your community. If you want the police department to have a clear idea of the crimes that are taking place and for them to catch the perpetrators, they need information. Unfortunately, this means I can't update you on the condition of this man. Were emergency vehicles on the scene? How do people know he was from Bayonne and looking for the lightrail when attacked?

I am sorry to read this, but I am not surprised about either the incident, or the response thereto. For as many reports as I read on this website alone, it's curious that more people don't ask what they can do for themselves, besides resorting to prayer, to suing the police, and to punditry on sentencing for these as-yet unapprehended perps.
A discussion of the right to effective self-defense is a valid one, generally, and the response to a "20-on-one"/"swarming" assault is an appropriate scenario to discuss, specifically. Perhaps New Jersey needs to see what the rest of the States have done in the last 15 years? (OK, around 45 of 50 states.) And, btw, DC v. Heller has been decided. Why not have a read?

Food for thought: I happen to remember a study from my college psychology course which looked at human behavior in situations where a person is caught in a dangerous situation. It turns out that people are more likely to help a person in distress when there are less or no other people around, rather than when there are many people in the area.

Keychain pepperspray is a gimmic. Its a false sense of security. It might work on one attacker but you better be ready to fight him/her off.due to the limited range and amount of the keychain versions, By the time you hit him/her with pepperspray and it takes effect you'll be in
struggle. 2 ounce or 4 ounce cannisters are effective against a group of up to 10 or more attackers but anything over 3/4 of an ounce is illegal in good ol' NJ.

Pepper spray isn't going to do much against a pack of 10 angry teenagers. It'll just piss them off. One will go down and then the rest will pounce on you. Your only hope is to avoid the confrontation or yell for help.

Yes, it has me freaking out too and I may do the same. Perhaps it is none of my business but I too would like to know the condition of the young man. I feel awful. And thank goodness for the neighboring witness that chased the kids away and called the police. I was out and about on Saturday evening at 11:00 pm and there were plenty of people in the Hamilton Park and on the streets. It was a very warm evening and therefore, I can only assume that more people were out and about in the Van Vorst Park neighborhood. I wonder why more people were not involved in trying to help the young man. I should think that a crowd would have gathered around him (trying to help), unless people were too scared to get involved. There must be more witnesses.

Where is the media on this attack? Their involvement could help bring the perps to justice by putting the administration's feet (and those of the police) to the fire.

I think the real problem here is that the people at the Jersey City Police Department let union rules, kindness, etc. screw with staffing on weekends and late at night.
The department probably has plenty of officers out on patrol at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, but not enough from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekend nights/early mornings. If we were listening on the scanner, we'd probably here the dispatcher essentially auctioning off different 911 emergencies. We'd here about the emotionally disturbed person, the rowdy group by Dickinson, a breaking and entering in the Heights, etc., and a couple of pleasant police officers in patrol cars trying to handle all of these different calls. Possible solutions: - Make sure that the pay for night work is much higher than the pay for day work. Maybe department recruiters should go to dinners at 4 a.m. and specifically recruit people who naturally like to stay up late. - Figure out a way to provide extra child care/life care support for officers who work nights and have kids and/or working spouses. - Downtown, continue to emphasize foot patrols and bike patrols, and increase the number. - Put an ultra-tough police call box by the dog run in Van Vorst Park. - Make sure that the police understand that stopping street fights involving suspected members of gangs is a top priority. Start prosecuting suspects based on medical evidence even if the victims (e.g., members of rival gangs) won't testify. - Recognize that, even if the families of these kids mean well, the parents probably have no serious ability to control the kids. Once these kids are convicted of any violent crime, then put them in house arrest ankle bracelets for a long time, so that the parents or others have some ability to control them, but they're not in jail or prison learning new techniques for jacking cars. - The JCPD needs to work with cool, hip hop-oriented marketing agencies to figure out how to get kids to see joining a gang as an act of self-humiliation and self-enslavement, rather than as a chance to join a band of brothers who happen to rob liquor stores.

Stop turning every *(#Y*(@ thread into an argument over gun control.
I know you all feel the need to spew your ideological crap all over the place, but guess what noone really gives a sht how you feel about gun control. It's been discussed to death, brought back as a zombie, then shot dead again by a 12 gauge (no pun intended). 1. Is the victm ok 2. Any news on the wolfpack 3. Slow response time by the jcpd? (has the slow response time been verified, or just a guess).
