Hurricane Sandy - Flood areas
#1

Not too shy to talk

Starting this post so people looking for rental apartments (particularly basement units) can find out what areas of the city were flooded by Hurricane Sandy. *** Does anyone know if 6th Street at Jersey Ave was flooded at all?

Not only is he a great friend and a genuinely honest person, but he is very talented (as you can see from his website). His specialty is branding and logos, but works with a team that have other capabilities as well.

Does anyone know what the story is with the cement poles with red, white and blue stripes mounted in the sidewalk on both sides of Washington between Morris and Grand Streets?

Food for thought: I happen to remember a study from my college psychology course which looked at human behavior in situations where a person is caught in a dangerous situation. It turns out that people are more likely to help a person in distress when there are less or no other people around, rather than when there are many people in the area.

32 minutes for police to arrive. that is EGREGIOUS.

i pity whoever did this because karma will get them. its always does. its only a matter of time before they pick a fight with the wrong person or in the wrong place at the wrong time. if that guy was an off duty cop, imagine the jail time for felony assault. or if the victim dies from internal injuries, have fun serving time for voluntary manslaughter. suddenly the kids who thought they were tough guys aren't so tough anymore.....

As a former resident of HP, I can tell you that the area is generally safe. However, there are still a few blocks here and there where some characters seem to hang out. (which I suppose is true in any city) What are the cross-streets of where you are considering? As a female living alone, you'll want to make sure you feel comfortable not just in the area, but specifically on the block where you live. As for the walk to and from newport path, the mall thing is a blessing in disguise (rain, snow, sweltering heat). But generally speaking, its probably the same distance to walk to grove street path if you prefer to remain outdoors.

I have the best travel agent. She was recommended to me through a co-worker for honeymoon planning a few months ago and she was extremely attentive, informative and pleasant. I highly recommend her!! Her email address is: amyjetter@aol.com and I believe the name of her business is Destinations.

sinik: If you read my post, you'd see that I was not disagreeing with the point that that driver is ultimately responsible for hitting a pedestrian, nor was I advocating for those who drive like maniacs. I was simply stating that pedestrians need to follow the rules as well. But the larger point is if your laying dead in the street for crossing recklessly, you're not going to be able to say "see, driver, I was right and you are wrong" now are you? And by the way, if a pedestrian appears in the middle of marin boulevard, nowhere near a crosswalk, while the traffic has a green light, you're telling me there's no risk of a car swerving head on into oncoming traffic? That poor kid in the back seat is in just as much danger as the selfish pedestrian who insists on being "right."

Dear Sinik: I agree with Brewster. Expecting drivers not to ever get distracted for a second is ludicrous. Some of us have kids in the back seat, others have allergies and sneezing fits, etc. Regardless of whether the distraction is something that YOU deem legitmate or not, the reality is that drivers, even the best of them, are imperfect human beings who can make mistakes. Furthermore, your "pedestrian is always right" attitude is simply reckless. While it is true that drivers should all be conscious that their vehicles can be deadly to pedestrians, that does not mean that pedestrians have a free pass to behave recklessly.

On the contrary, pedestrians who defiantly cross without regard to crosswalks and/or walk lights have just as much potential to cause a serious accident. Every morning on Marin Boulevard, there are pedestrians who choose to play frogger on one of the busiest roads in this city by crossing wherever and whenever they feel like it. If a driver has to swerve to avoid a pedestrian who unexplicably is in the middle of the road while you've got a green light, it could easily cause a serious accident. The driver could swerve into oncoming traffic, or even end up swerving onto the sidewalk, hitting pedestrians who were actually following the rules. (You seem to worry about children being hit while crossing the street, but what about the children in the back seat of their parents' cars?)

The point is that both drivers and pedestrians have an equal obligation to follow the rules. If we could all put our stubbornness aside and try to respect the laws that are in place for all of our own safety, we can all make the roads a safer place for EVERYONE (even the jerks who fly through stop signs!)

For the past two nights the stench in our neighborhood in Paulus Hook (Washington between Sussex and Morris) has been disgusting. Anyone else notice it/know what the problem is?

What's with that grumpy old guy waiter? He's incredibly rude and makes you feel like your imposing on him just for being there the entire time your eating dinner. I don't need little miss sunshine waiting on me hand and foot, but this guy is just foul.

You've got to go there and check it out....Johns is much more than a Pizza parlor. Its gorgeous inside and much roomier than than presto's actually. And the menu is much more than just pizza...entrees, paninis, subs, all kinds of martini drinks, etc. I like Presto's too and I would love nothing more than to have Paulus Hook turn into a Little Italy!

Love it!! Went there tonight...the staff was attentive, the food was excellent, the prices were reasonable and the ambiance was great too. We will definitely be eating there again. John's is exactly the type of restaurant Paulus Hook needed. Presto's will really have to step it up a notch to keep up with their new competition.

No, actually I was parked on the block where I live. I have the right zone permit. The ticket and notice left on my car say that I was booted because I was parked over 2 hours.

Does anyone else notice that the parking authority seems to be policing the streets of paulus hook 24/7 all of a sudden? Despite having a resident parking permit and parking on the right side for street cleaning, I still got booted last week for parking 12 minutes over the apparent 2 hour maximum.
