went to the whole foods in edgewater last night for the first time (didn't even know it existed until i read about it on here the other day). decent size, good selection, reasonable prices. granted you have a car it's not that far of a drive from downtown JC and considering i only go food shopping about once every two weeks i'd rather drive the extra 20 minutes to shop at whole foods than have to go to a&p.

A woman who works at Liberty Harbor told me they were approaching Whole Foods, Wegmans and Trader Joe's to see if one of them would be interested in the space they have reserved for a supermarket.

Anyone been to the WF on Houston? There are a lot of new developments on the LES but right by WF its still kinda crappy.

If they can build in this area, why not JC?

it's all zip code studies. regardless of what's around the LES store, within a tiny geographic area there are huge incomes and an inordinate amount of people.

When you look at our main zips, and study the incomes and households, it's usually very hard for decision makers to justify a store to their boards, regardless of how many condos are being built on top of it. Even with 20,000 new units occupied with $100K plus incomes, it doesn't make a drop in the bucket in the larger scheme around here.

I love how we've already watched two tiny gourmet stores go out of business in Downtown and yet people think we can support a Whole Foods. Some people on this board are like the kid begging for cake while the ice cream is melting down his hand.

You cannot compare GO and Hourglass to Whole Foods. That's like comparing a bodega to shoprite.

If you are referring to GO, that's a perfect example not of inability of the area to support gourmet stores, but of poor management, poor advertising, and poor reputation.

Whole Foods, Wegman's, and Trader Joes all have brand name recognition; they have an interest in protecting their reputation- i.e., not selling expired foods; and the stores are well managed because they have the experience from operating dozens to hundreds of other locations to draw on. Also, full service grocery stores have the advantage of more space to sell a greater variety of goods; all three of those chains also have their own brands generating more revenue for the company.

That may be true, but the bodegas here actually get traffic.

Bodegas are great, one of those underrated amenities of city life. But they aren't the same as a grocery store.

What I think Jersey City needs more than whole foods even is a few real urban supermarkets. Bodegas just don't have the ability to stock everything a grocery store has, and the suburban style supermarkets aren't really integrated into neighborhoods or accessible to non-driver customers.

If you go to a something like Gristedes in Manhattan, most of them have the variety of goods that ShopRite or A&P have, but have in stock less of each item, have smaller aisles, and have generally faster moving lines because primarily customers are shopping every other day for many fewer items per trip. On the other hand, the suburban style markets have a lot of every individual item, wide aisles for large carts, and long lines because customers are buying a week or two weeks worth of food at once.

Ian - I think C-Town could be such a store - the size is right, the location is good, HP, HC and VVP residents can walk there. Too bad the previous owner and current owner seem clueless. I wonder, however, if the current owner has a long term strategy that began with stopping WIC and eliminating their poor customers. If so, what is their next step?

What we need here is a store like Integral Yoga that's on 13th Street in the city. If someone opened a store like that, I would shop there ALL the time! Their produce is ALL organic and it's always beautiful and affordable. How do they do it?!?!

C-Town could fill that void, I suppose, but it does not. I live a few buildings away from it right now, and still rather go to the markets on Newark. I have made a few emergency purchases at C-Town, but won't buy dairy, frozen foods, or meat from C-Town given its track record in the past. Also, C-Town's fronting along Third Street is a big mess from their deliveries and unwillingness to clean up. There is often broken glass and trash residue. Earlier this week there were hundreds of grains of rice scattered on the sidewalk. So on principle I don't want to give them any money since they are very bad neighbors.

This is not really hard to figure out - look at the population density and the income level in that neighborhood. Compare both of these factors with downtown JC and you'll understand why we don't have a store like that yet.

Not sure how reliable this is as I don't remember where I heard it but I think they're putting a Whole Foods in the new complex on the corner of Grand and Jersey Ave.

That would be Liberty Harbor North, which is a very nice sales pitch, but like most advertising, absolutely unfounded.

correct, unfounded. I'm sure they want one, but it's a long time coming to a project with a what... 10 yr buildout?

Well the "rumored" location at Grand and Jersey is the largest retail segment of Phase I. Earlier this summer, Mocco was quoted in one of the local papers that the specific retail buildings that would house a grocery store were 18 to 24 months away from completion. However, the project has been running behind schedule and I think its probably closer to 24 to 36 months before the structure is even completed.

but also many more years for the rest of LHN to be built. I dont think there's enough "people" with only 1/3 of LHN done PLUS downtown to justify a premium grocer to make a committment. Ian.. any idea how much sq ft is earmarked? a real "suburban" Whole Foods can go 60,000 to 80,000 sq ft.

To my understanding, the PAD redevelopment plan is still undergoing changes at this point. Although there are plenty of construction approvals & zoning restrictions in place, I'm still wondering what brandname businesses will be moving in amongst the boutique shops we're all expecting there. Wholefoods would be a nice alternative to Shoprite.

True. But they actually had a sign in the window, and they didn't show up.

And there's never even been an actual location for this so-called Whole Foods, and yet it's launched a thousand posts.

...history... doomed to repeat...

He's being sarcastic -- it's an expensive NYC restaurant.

Newark Ave is beginning to look like the once and future Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Sigh.

Ahhhh Whole Foods. I still remember the day I left shaking when my grocery bill rang up to $550.00. Yup folks, I had employees gather and my knees were shaking. How about a Trader Joe's, now THAT'S more JC.

I too vote for Trader Joe's - a no brainer (unless they have a company policy against dealing with corrupt municipalities)

The most important thing that a Whole Foods would do is put pressure on the other grocery stores in the area to sink or swim. I don't think ShopRite or A&P do a very good job of providing high quality produce or decent customer service. I think with a Whole Foods in their backyard, one of those stores will either get its act together or go under. So even if you don't shop at Whole Foods, you'd probably benefit from its presence.

+1

Good article summing up the Whole Food mainliners syndrome of junkies lookin for a fix in JC spinning rumors. Thanks also for bringing in the retail space considerations necessary for a Whole Foods or destination retail which most are oblivious to knowing, whether it's a Whole Foods or B&N, Border's et al. Having been present at the birth of the B&N superstore beginnings, I know that large retailers such as the aforementioned, look for retail space and traffic far in excess of any locale presently in place in JC.
