A few more thoughts:
My fingers are crossed that the JCPD regularly posts an officer in a scooter vehicle on the playground, especially from when kids get out of school until when the bars close. But it's pretty dead over there from early morning until early afternoon, so I'm not sure having a police presence there during those hours would accomplish much. I still dig the idea of having a small kiosk or booth or guardhouse or something along those lines in the park -- it could end up being a fantastic deterrent. But in the meantime, a motorized buggy is fine with me.

There was a substantial drug bust on Wayne Street last night and a large amount of crack cocaine was confiscated.
From what I observed today, a uniformed police officer was stationed at the playground in one of those scooter vehicles from the early morning hours until late afternoon. Once he left, another uniformed officer arrived and she was on foot patrol for awhile standing in the vicinity of 89 Hampton Court on the south side of the street when I last was outside. I'm also rather confident I spotted an undercover officer in the mix as well. And as ihatethiscity mentioned, there were police vehicles parked at the intersection of Wayne and Jersey, and a lot of the regulars from the block were MIA. An officer I spoke with said their goal is to crack down on the drug dealing and loitering that has been going on along Wayne Street. They plan to monitor the traditional trouble spots more closely -- namely the block between Barrow and Jersey along with the area just west of Jersey between Jersey and Varick -- in response to last night's bust. While I hope this stepped-up presence continues for a long time to come, I am not holding my breath. But at this very moment, I am elated they are very visible and making their presence known.

Last night around 9:00 p.m. between Jersey & Varick, Wayne St. had about 6 cop cars and about a dozen cops walking up and down the block shining flashlights all over the place. They would not say what was going on, but it sure seemed somewhat serious. They definitely were searching for small stuff i.e. stash or something since they were looking in peoples front yard areas and on the sidewalks. Other than that, I know nothing as the cops were useless in saying what was going on. Surprise, surprise.

Something is happening on Wayne St. I hav edriven down that street 3 times today and there was a police scooter parked in that little park, a seperate time there was a police scooter parked on the corner of of Jersey and Wayne, and there was also a "patrol vehical" type of truck thing, parked there. None of the regulars are out today. I wonder what brought the police over to this part of town today.....

On my way home from the PATH station yesterday, I saw somebody throw a chair out the 2nd or 3rd story window of the building on the NW corner of Wayne and Jersey. Didn't hit anyone (landed on the street next to the sidewalk), but I'm guessing that the jackass did it again later on, causing the ruckuss.

I'am surprised because that area has improved in last few years. I guess no street is safe these days. Just wait for some bad news from that corner.

And you wonder why that $1mm+ brownstone on the corner of Wayne near Jersey Ave hasn't sold. I'm amazed anyone buys those places on the south side of that block.
How is it that there has been no progess on this particular block of JC? Everyone knows it's a real problem and the only thing I've heard was they cracked down on some gambling ring run out of the bodega....

The municipal election is next May. It is important that people make this an issue for the Mayor, Ward E, and at-large councilmembers. By the way, I have a friend who relocated to Bayonne. A new group of people were dealing drugs on his block. My friend called the cops and the problem was solved. No more drug dealing.

Between the breaking bottles, yelling adults, squealing children, blasting music and barking dogs, the Angel Luis Ramos Playground is still going strong tonight -- and it's after 11:30PM!
With rising energy costs, I understand that not everyone can afford air conditioning, and in many of the old buildings on my block (like mine), the window A/C units are not all that effective anyway. I also comprehend that not every adult has a conventional work schedule. But last week at this time, there were literally two dozen extremely young children out there when I walked past. And tonight it sounds like there are just as many (if not more). With all of the drug dealing, alcohol consumption and blatant mischief going on around these kids in the park, someone should really think about their futures and send these tots to bed already. The cops have driven by a few times to briefly blare their sirens at unoccupied double-parked cars, but no one is being ticketed and the police continue to turn a blind eye to all that's going on at the playground. Another interesting tidbit: A Mister Softee ice cream truck is literally stopping at the playground as I type this. How do I know? Because I can hear the freakin' jingle! And midnight is just around the corner!

The good part of having one in the front is that it is visible from the street (for cops and neighbors to see), but it can also provide easy access for hoodlums as well as a quick getaway. My building has its fire escape in the back, and I've never had a problem with break-ins here in over 7 years (knock on wood). Access to our backyard from the street and from other properties is rather difficult, though it bothers me that the fire escape is not visible from the street so prowlers wouldn't be spotted by cops and neighbors as easily. Another big problem: I'm not exactly sure how I would easily exit the rear yard in case of a fire! I'm guessing that firefighters would just cut through the high chain-link fences to get us safely away from the building, but maybe I'm being too optimistic? Yikes!

Has anyone spoken to Fulup about this? You would think that he would be all for cleaning up this block as the southern side of the block is beautiful with the Queen Anne's and the Barrow Mansion.
I went to the VVP association meeting a couple months back, the one that Jerry Healy showed up to and they were out in full force that night despite the mayor being across the street at the Barrow Mansion. It would have been classic if one of the thugs tried to sell him a bag of fun. I could just picture it. sorry Mr. drug dealer, I only consume liquids.

It was really bad last week. I was driving down the block and I guess the dealers or junkies were lazy as cars were just pulling up to the side and the dealers were running up to the cars. The engines were running and I could barely drive down the block as there were at least 2 cars at the same time purchasing drugs. I called the non-emergency number but i don't know if they bothered to show up. It was a freakn open air drug market.
Has anyone seen the episodes of "the wire" where they legalized drugs in the areas they called Hamsterdamn? It looked just like that. Plus each and everytime friends come to visit or I walk my dog down the street, the hooligans just have to say something. They just can't keep their F'n mouths shut. It's either hey baby this, Yo gimmie a smoke, etc... Why do the cops let this happen over and over again? I double park my car in front of the grocery store on Grove for 2 mins and they are up my ass. I'm in the frggin car with the engine running as my girlfriend runs in and the guy is on me to move.

I've been thinking more about Wayne Street's challenges...
One good thing about the park being open at all hours of the day and night is that at least SOME of the bad folks retreat back from the street deep into the park. If the park had a retractable gate without a regular police presence on the block, that could potentially push ALL of the hoodlums out onto the stoops, sidewalks and street. Ugh.

'Tis the season (summer!) to revive this thread.
Has anyone heard about progress on efforts to step up patrols at Angel Luis Ramos Playground on Wayne Street? Or if getting some sort of police "booth" or retractable park gate is ever going to happen? I've lived on Wayne Street for 7+ years and I'm getting pretty tired of the shenanigans going on over here (even though I'm told it used to be much worse back in the '80s and '90s). I just posed a similar question to JCList's Yvonne in this thread. She was one of the neighborhood activists who was instrumental in getting the playground built and I am glad to see that she's a member of JCList.com. I am hoping she can offer some insight and make some recommendations about what can be done to clean up the block once and for all. The drug dealing, loud music, bottle smashing, street fights, late-night loitering and public urination this park seems to invite needs to stop.

I've got to be honest. The intersection of Wayne & Barrow is probably one of the most notorious in downtown JC. There is a park/basketball court on one corner which tends to be the source of a lot of talk.
I would do a little more investigating, on this site even...search Wayne Street. Then come by on Friday and Saturday evenings late and see what you think. Of course, it all depends on how close you are talking about to that spot. Wayne Street, closer to Grove isn't much of an issue, and Wayne Street, west of Jersey is lovely. But the spot you are speaking about has had a lot of trouble, many muggings on barrow, and everybody (even the councilwomen's son) go to that spot to buy their drugs. Apartments in that area tend to be a little cheaper, because of these problems which JC residents tend to know about. Any other street downtown is great. I've lived here for six years and love the area. But that is the one block I would not live on. Best of luck in your apartment search.

i everyone, this is my first post.
My Wife and I are thinking of relocating to Jersey City. She is a Nurse in Manhattan and it would be a much better commute. I found a place yesterday around the Wayne Street/Barrow Street area. I know JC is an urban area and you have to have street smarts, but can those of you that know JC very well please tell me if I can feel good about telling my Wife it is a decent area to live in? Safe etc... for her to walk from path at night blah blah blah. Thanks everyone!

Until recently, I had thought that people on this forum were blowing the Wayne St. issues out of proportion. As a fairly tall male, I've never had anyone on the street say or do anything that worried me - until last night.
My new girlfriend and I were walking home from the PATH, innocently holding hands. When we passed by Mirza's office on Wayne, one of the stoop creatures said something to the tune of "why do you have to ruin the night like that?" He beckoned us to stop and talk to him, but we kept on walking. Better to ignore unwanted behavior, dog-whisperer style. WTF? We weren't dressed out of the ordinary or anything like that. Maybe when those guys see a pretty girl walk by they can't help but say something provocative, but it makes no sense to me. I don't think we live in a truly dangerous neighborhood, but I'll be taking Columbus from now on if she's with me. Wish there was a solution to the problem, but I don't really see one.

If you guy swant to make a change why not call the police when you see crime happening?
Call the non-emergency # 201-547-5477 and give descriptions of any and all people involved in criminal activity. You know the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child"? Well, it takes presure from concerned citizens to save their community. you have to be relentless to let the park thugs know that the resident of wayne street will not tolerate them. Call the police if you see them drinking in public, fighting, being disorderly, or selling drugs. Give accurate descriptions of all persons involved and locations. Contact you Council person and attend & vioce your concerns and your local community meeting.

The main problem is the stuff that goes on on Wayne St. would NEVER fly on other blocks and that is what pisses me off. The reality is that cops ignore what happens on that block because it keeps the trouble makers in one area, instead of having them spread all over the nicer blocks.
I just want the police and the city to treat out little area with the same repect they would treat VVP area, or that whole area near the marina. There is no reason why Wayne St. and section 8 housing should not have to abide by the same rules as everyone else. At the end of the day that little park is the root of the problem.

Hello All ,Wayne st. has always been a problem street all my life and im a lifelong jc downtown resident. It seems to have gotten worse from what i read on this board. I beleive the main problem is that little park in the middle of the block. They should lock it up after a certain time or build a small precinct like they did in Newport Mall.

Duh, Not everyone that lives in those Section 8s is a crack head. But lets be honest, there is a lot drug dealing, bottle smashing, chicken bone throwing, and general disrespect that goes in that park. Why should that be allowed? I heard a little kid call an old lady "white cracker bitch"! How is that OK?
