This is a conspiracy case. There were many people arrested in this case. In the end 6 remained. These cases are all about fighting for your freedom. People will say anything to keep their butts out of jail. I sat through this trial and clearly saw that these men were convicted by a jury based on the testimony of co-conspirators and a convict with excellent timing; looking for a way out.

I understand your concern. As residents of Jersey City, you want to see the streets cleaned up and praise any news that seems to be doing just that. But you should also make it a point to seek the truth. Stand by your neighbor! Sit in on a few of these cases. See if all the hype is really what it's played up to be.

These "pricks" are young men with children and families. They had a right to a trial and an opportunity to defend themselves. They lost and may be put away for some time now. Who knows though...they might just earn that MBA. I only pray that when they are returned to society, that they are stronger and smarter individuals.

NEWARK - A cocaine distribution ring based in Jersey City was so sophisticated that its reputed members acted in roles not unlike those of executives at a legitimate business, a federal prosecutor told a jury yesterday.

There was someone serving as a chief executive officer, a manager of day-to-day operations, suppliers and distributors, as well as warehouses and records, Assistant U.S. Attorney Dennis Carletta said. The only difference between the network and a bona fide company was that the network sold illicit drugs, he said.

"Each of these men are drug dealers and their product was cocaine," Carletta said. "They shared one common goal, one purpose: Sell drugs, make money."

But defense lawyers offered an opposing view. While a couple of them acknowledged their clients had sold drugs, they insisted there was no conspiracy and more than one argued the evidence will not tie their client into the buying and selling of any narcotics.

"I submit they had no reason to arrest him," defense attorney Dennis Cipriano said of his client, Maximino Nieves, 34, of West Orange. "None at all."

Michael Koribanics, the lawyer for Misael Arzola, 28, of Jersey City, accused prosecutors of exaggerating their case.

The conflicting statements came as the trial of three brothers from Jersey City, two men from Essex County and one from Morris County opened in Newark before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton.

An eight-count indictment from earlier this year charged the six defendants with conspiracy to distribute five or more kilograms of cocaine. Four are also accused of weapons offenses.

Arsenio Arzola, 36, of Jersey City, has been charged with shooting at a Drug Enforcement Administration agent when he was arrested on June 30, 2005, the same day the others were taken into custody. Carletta called him the ring's manager.

His public defender, Kevin Carlucci, said Arzola opened fire strictly in self-defense, not knowing those bursting into his home were police.

Carletta described Ben Arzola, 40, of Jersey City, the oldest of the brothers, as the ringleader of the group.

But defense attorney Anthony Iacullo disputed the characterization. "Ben Arzola is not part of a conspiracy, he's not a CEO and he didn't distribute cocaine," Iacullo said.

The ring used three separate "stash houses" in Jersey City - 57 Corbin Ave., 429 Fairmount Ave. and 115 Highland Ave.- to carry out its operation, along with cell phones and weapons, Carletta said.

FORMER AKON AFFILIATED STUDIO RAIDED IN DRUG BUST

New Jersey City police raided the offices of Block Royal Entertainment yesterday (March 19) and yielded over 700 grams of cocaine and crack, $30,000, four handguns, hollow-point ammunition, four vehicles, and a bulletproof vest, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

The studio was founded by Akon's former road manager Robert "Screw" Montanez, who was murdered in 2004 in a confrontation with a man trying to rob Capone of Capone-N-Noreaga. Akon, whose early career was promoted via Block Royal, was with Montanez at the time of his death.

Over 24 people associated with Block Royal Entertainment have been arrested by police, who have been conducting various forms of surveillance of the organization over the past three months.

The six month investigation, dubbed "Royal Flush," netted over 700 grams of powered and crack cocaine, worth an estimated $70,000.

Police also recovered $30,000 in cash, four handguns, a bulletproof vest, hollow-point bullets and four vehicles.

?Law enforcement wanted to see how extensive this network was,? Hudson County Prosecutor Edward J. De Fazio told The Record. "As you can see, it was quite extensive. Based on the amount we confiscated, it is clear this was a large-scale wholesale distribution network. These were fellows dealing in large amounts of drugs, and they were dealing to top distributors.?

Those arrested face various state and federal weapons and drug distribution charges.

I really didn't pay any attention to those SUVs. Now I wish I'd looked at them a little harder, and I wish I'd looked at the barber shop harder when I went into the "gallery" there for that arts festival a few months ago. I remember thinking that the gallery wasn't as nice as the Jersey Journal reporter had implied, but I didn't notice giant bales of drugs or anything like that.

Anyhow, I wonder if these folks had any ties to the guys on Wayne or the guys in the apartment building next to C Town. If so, maybe the police will be able to calm things down in the rest of the neighborhood now that they've dealt with the distribution center.

Jersey City cops made a huge drug bust at the Downtown offices of a Jersey City rap recording label, reports said.

Cops said two pounds of cocaine and heroin were recovered and a total of 23 people were arrested and connected to the Block Royal label, which was founded as "Capital B" several years ago by a man shot to death in 2004 in the parking lot of a Jersey City bar.

Block Royal - located on Christopher Columbus Drive near Grove Street, with its front entrance inside a barber shop - was the meeting place for the upper echelon of a drug-dealing enterprise, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

"The inter-relationship among drug distribution, violence and the ancillary connection to rogue segments of the music industry have been documented for many years," said DeFazio, whose office conducted the probe with the DEA and Jersey City police.

"Clearly, Block Royal was a front for an illegal drug distribution enterprise."

Attempts to reach Block Royal by phone yesterday were unsuccessful and workers in the barbershop said they couldn't let anyone in because the boss was out.

Block Royal president Fabian Orriols, 41, of Jersey City, was arrested after he was found with 100 grams of packaged heroin with a street value of $75,000, DeFazio said.

Other Jersey City residents arrested, on a variety of charges, were Jayson Santiago, 32; Walter Cedeno, 20; Catalina Sacasa, 24; Raul Morales, 25; Carlos Narvaez, 31; Daniel Acevedo, 26; Eliseo Ledesma, 24; Erick Perez, 23; Martin Arzola, 35; Alfredo O'Neill, 31; and Michael J. Perrier, 35, DeFazio said.

Also arrested were: Union City residents John DeValle, 25; Luis Ortiz, 23; Orlando Bayona, 26; and Norberto Martel, 40; Hoboken resident Jose Santiago, 31; and Secaucus resident Daniel R. Orriols, 37.

Out-of-county residents busted include Ronald Bodnar, 49; of Ramsey; George Bello, 35, of Rochelle Park; Luanna Colon, 42, of South Bound Brook, and Jamesburg residents Marcus Marcano, 25, and Joseph Marcano, 25, DeFazio said.

Also seized was more than 700 grams of cocaine, $30,000 in cash, four handguns, hollow-point bullets, a bulletproof vest and four vehicles, DeFazio said.

The arrests were made during December and February but only became public yesterday because investigators were chasing down leads that eventually fell through, DeFazio said.

"This was a highly successful investigation which took down a large group of individuals," said U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie. "These drug organizations ruin lives, scar neighborhoods and breed gun violence. It's good to see another one put out of business."

Orriols was convicted on manslaughter charges, along with the founder of Capital B, Robert "Tito" Montanez, in the slaying of Jose "Joker" Martinez, who was shot in 1995 in a Baldwin Avenue doorway, officials said. Orriols served almost three years and Montanez almost four years on that conviction, state corrections officials said.

Montanez was shot and killed outside the Ringside Bar on Tonnelle Avenue on Dec. 16, 2004, after a party attended by rap stars Cappone and Akon, authorities said.
