The security guards acted immature and did not seem to have a lot of training or experience. Again many teachers (most without guns I presume) do a pretty good job of controlling their classrooms. They create an environment with rules of behavior and enforce those rules BEFORE any one has to even think about pulling out a gun!!! Friday night one average Police officer would have prevented that melee. Not all the teens there were fighting. It's time to reward those that can behave and get rid of the "trash" that can't behave.

I agree. You can blame Bret Shundler, the city, lack of "teen centers" or the poor unfortunate woman who has to work as a security guard in that trash bin. The bottom line is that the Newport Mall is disgusting on the weekends because of the rabble kids that go there. And how can you possibly expect someone without a gun to try and control them? It's highly probable that some of those kids are packing a piece. It's only a matter of time before someone gets shot in that place.

What a shame. It used to be such a nice mall before the trash took over.

Last time I was there I passed a woman who was screaming at her 5 or 6 year old to "leave that sh*t alone" after the child spilled a container of french fries on the floor. She didn't even make an attempt to pick it up.

Every time I pass through, I see something disgusting.

I agree, its impossible not to sterotype and unfortunatley, those few make it very bad for the majority, thats reality!

Riverside Sq mall (Hackensack)is just as nice if not better than Shorthills and a lot closer.

What is wrong with making it where teens must be accompanied by an adult on nights and weekends?

It will limit teen gangs hanging out and fighting. This can't be good for merchants.

Something like half the malls in the country are going this way.

If you get rid of the food court the terrorists win.

I don't see how they would ever get rid of that food court. many people who work in the area go there for lunch.

Newport Mall a couple of years back had lots of signs around the mall that teens couldn't be in groups/"packs" of 4/5 or more. (I forget the number). Otherwise they would be asked to leave the mall.

The problem is once you have these large "packs" of teens gathering - that's when they get out of control and in trouble and fights break out.

What ever happened to this program?

Also, that police office / sub precinct is a joke. Every time I walk by it, there is never anyone inside and its always closed.

And since those are the only two places in the mall they are always packed.

From what I hear, the mall has come a long way from what it used to be.. but it still has a long way to go.

A mall in Jersey City ! Whose gonna go there ?? said over 20 years ago when it was being built. And when it was finally built we said "What, you gotta pay for parking" !

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Teens will soon need an adult with them to enter Hanes Mall on a Friday or Saturday night after complaints from shoppers and merchants prompted mall management to make the change. Starting March 5 Hanes Mall policy will prohibit teens under age 18 from entering the mall from 6 p.m. until close without someone over age 21. Winston-Salem police officers or mall security officers will check IDs at all mall entrances to enforce the new youth escort policy. Shoppers and mall merchants say the policy is long overdue. "I honestly think it's a good idea to keep the kids out of trouble. I mean they will come out here and they will fight and the parents just drop them off and expect the mall to babysit them." said shopper Kara Boston. Tremon Springs manages the Xcluzv clothing store in Hanes Mall, and says he dreads Friday and Saturday nights. "It's like a circus. Kids running wild, vulgar language -- it's crazy." Springs said. Springs and other mall merchants have complained to mall management saying sales were down, crime up and crowds uncontrollable on Friday and Saturday nights. Hanes Mall Manager Dennis Cerny says he has listened. "It hasn't been fights or violence that's been the motivation, it's been customer and merchant sentiment." Cerny said. CBL Properties, the parent company of Hanes Mall, has youth escort policies at nearly a quarter of its properties nationwide. The goal of the policy is to keep shoppers feeling safe, comfortable and willing to shop on weekend nights. Many shoppers say they've stayed away from the mall on Fridays and Saturdays because of massive crowds of unsupervised teens. "After a period of time we will have a shopper friendly environment following the implementation of this program, and that's not necessarily the case now." Cerny said. Shopper Pam Vynalek says she tries to stay away from the mall on weekend nights, and she's not worried that the policy will infringe on the rights of teens. "If they are here to spend and buy things, that's fine. But if they're just here to loiter, it's not a place for them to just come and hang out." Vynalek said. Store owners and clerks say they will also check for unescorted teens inside the mall. Other area malls do not have a similar policy. Oak Hollow Mall in High Point is also owned by CBL Properties, but they do not have a similar curfew. Four Seasons Town Centre in Greensboro is owned by a different company, but officials there say they have no policy involving teens in the mall.

Police make arrest in attempted kidnapping at Short Hills mall

By Thomas Meagher
September 08, 2009, 1:03PM

MILLBURN -- Millburn Police have arrested a Hillside man on attempted kidnapping, carjacking, robbery and other charges in connection with an incident last week involving a Randolph woman who had been shopping at The Mall in Short Hills.
Tracy J. Rogers is suspected of forcing his way into the 56-year-old woman's car around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 4, pulling out a knife and demanding money, police said.
After the woman turned over cash and jewelry, Rogers told her to drive to an ATM. The woman, though, opened the car door and ran. Another mall patron parking his car nearby assisted her and called police. Rogers then drove off in another vehicle.
Millburn detectives arrested Rogers, 43, in Newark without incident, police said.
"What was very helpful in the investigation was a witness account of the vehicle that we believe the actor fled the scene in," Capt. James Miller said. "A continued investigation led to the arrest of our suspect."
The woman, from Randolph, was not injured.
Rogers also faces charges of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. Police recovered some of the proceeds taken during the robbery, Miller said.
Rogers is being held at the Essex County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
He was released from prison in November after serving a nearly two-year term on burglary convictions, according to the state Department of Corrections.

******

On 1/28/2010 at approximately 12:58 PM the Millburn Police assisted security officers of the Mall at Short Hills in the investigation of suspicious activity at the Mall. One juvenile was allegedly to have removed $26.85 worth of coins from the glass ball fountain located inside the Mall. It was further reported that a second juvenile dropped bags of merchandise and ran after being approached by security officers. It is alleged that he bags contained stolen merchandise from Hollister valued at $336.80 and Abercrombie & Fitch valued at $56.70. Both juveniles, age 15, from Newark were taken into custody. One youth was charged with theft, shoplifting and receiving stolen property. The second juvenile was charged with shoplifting and receiving stolen property.

******
On 1/25/2010 at approximately 3:32 PM the Millburn Police responded to Polo Ralph Lauren, located at the Mall at Short Hills on a report of a theft that occurred on 1/22/2010. Surveillance video revealed a man concealing a total of three black nylon utility jackets under his own coat and exiting the store. The jackets have a combined value of $2,985.00.

Paramus Mall

(from www.northjersey.com)

3 arrested, 2 officers injured in fight at Paramus mall

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

PARAMUS ? Three people were arrested and two police officers were treated for minor injuries after a fight broke out inside the Hollister store at the Garden State Plaza mall on Tuesday night, authorities said.
The fight was reported around 7:50 p.m. by mall security guards, said police Chief Richard Cary.
Jazmine Cole, 18, and a 17-year-old boy, both from Teaneck ? were taken into custody after they allegedly spat at Officer Marc Glantschnig and a security guard, Robert Acito, Cary said. An 18-year-old Teaneck woman whose name was not immediately available was arrested and taken to Hackensack University Medical Center to be treated for cuts and bruises, Cary said.

Cole was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. The 17-year-old was charged with simple assault. Cary expected charges to be filed against the third suspect.
Glantschnig and a second responding officer, Gregory Hooper, were taken to an area hospital, Cary said. Glantschnig complained of shoulder pain while Hooper said his knee was bothering him. Neither injury appeared to be serious.

"Some of the patrons apparently brushed up against each other and there was an exchange of words, and the dispute led to an assault," Cary said.

1. Security did not observe the situation accurately.

2. Security did not report and/or call for Five-O backup soon enough (please remember I was there and saw when they touched the walkies)

3. Security did not look tough or official as a deterrent.

Side note: None of the four security guards did what one single police officer or one good security guard could have done. Again its about control not pistol whipping people. By that time its way too late. Teachers usually do a good job controlling classrooms on a massive scale. It can be done and other malls do a better job.

I seem to remember that there used to be one of those "mini precincts" in the mall. maybe I'm wrong.

Why would they interfere? Like those Security Guards in Seattle,

http://abcnews.go.com/US/seattle-teen ... ds-watch/story?id=9800478

they're probably instructed to stay on the sidelines and call the PD.

By interfering, it brings Civil Liabilities onto them, AND the Security company. So if you think security guards are there to actually do anything, you got a lot to learn.

Once chairs start flying there is no way of course they should be involved....but if one of their big boys was up there or a police officer it would absolutely have been a deterrent. As another witness said this problem was brewing for awhile. Security mistakes were made and hopefully someone learned for next time. I would absolutely expect security to contain the problem and alert other mall security and police promptly. That did not appear to happen. Security guards are there to control the situation and if they can't THEY have a lot to learn.
