A very specious argument since Ready, Fire, Aim Fulop had no problem making what you'd have to hope was an informed decision to initially endorse the idea, absent the enabling legislation.

Yup, the Mayor was all in for the casino when it was first proposed. I'd love to know what (follow the $) changed. And to have his 100K spokesperson talking about 'secrecy' in Trenton is pretty funny, coming from the administration which does all it can, legally and otherwise, to thwart FOIA requests.

Casino expansion fans take swipe at 'flip flop' Fulop

EAST RUTHERFORD — Proponents of casino expansion took a few shots at Mayor Steve Fulop today as state lawmakers and union leaders gathered in the Meadowlands to drum up support for a November referendum aimed at allowing casinos to operate outside of Atlantic City.

Fulop once offered full-throated support of opening a casino in Jersey City, but in mid-April he said a visit to Atlantic City led him to rethink his position. Fulop has said if he ends up opposing casino expansion he will campaign against November's referendum. A new poll shows voters are split on the idea.

It isn't. It's an example of either not having someone around him to tell him "no" or his unwillingness to listen to "no":

The Mayor has a way of bringing out cynicism the way that measles has a way of bringing out a rash.

Okay great, he finally landed on the decision that the public seems to favor, but he can?t go from calling Jersey City casino opponents ?Debbie Downers? (his words), to suddenly agreeing with them, without looking ?politically expedient? to put it far too nicely.

No more adorable than willful naivete or trying to hard to condescend.

I assure you, it's all condescension.

I made no characterizations whatsoever of his motivations (nor do I claim to know him personally). I pointed out that it's common for some people to attack certain politicians, no matter what they say or do.

And I'm curious, how is torching Norcross in public an example of "political expedience?"

John T. is absolutely right. This mayor's request for input on casino expansion is a PR exercise mated to a fishing expedition for email addresses.

If he had wanted input he could have looked at the close to 500 signatures and comments we've amassed with our petition on Change.org. against casinos in JC. Go to:

https://www.change.org/p/mayor-steven- ... o-gambling-in-jersey-city

Or, the mayor could go to the lengthy discussion on Nextdoor.com where there are over 100 comments, the vast majority opposed.

If these two sources aren't enough, the mayor should gather feedback without gathering email addresses and should, in a transparent way, share the results with residents.

No more adorable than willful naivete or trying to hard to condescend. If you don't understand what's going on (or choose to subscribe to your own facts) but still feel the need to comment, that's an option, I suppose. Having spent the better part of five years with the man on a pretty much daily basis, I can tell you flatly and without qualification that political expedience are the first three instincts that fire in him when presented with information. And you know what - more often than not, it serves him well. He's good at it. The thing is, though, he seems to have lost the ability to override that instinct when necessary and there doesn't seem to be anyone who tells him no, at least not that he listens to. (The Norcross email a few weeks ago is a great example.) That's my experience. What's yours?

When Fulop supports a casino plan, he's blasted for being in the pocket of big donors.

When he backs down on the plan -- which is what a lot of people, both critics and supporters of his alike -- he's pilloried for being "politically expedient."

I have to say, I just adore the unfalsifiability of extreme cynicsm. :D

You can also....

1) Send him a letter, email, Tweet, Snapchat, whatever

2) Start up a real citizen petition

3) Find out if someone else, or an organization, is working on 2) already

This goes straight to his election campaign, will get used to get email addresses, and it's a big question mark if anyone ever reads the actual submissions.

1) You can easily generate an email address for those kinds of purposes

2) Any method you use to get in touch with a politician to express your views potentially puts you on a list (and you're probably on several lists already, welcome to the Internet)

3) If he's promoting it in a newsletter, he is more likely than not to pay attention to the results.

That's exactly right, S. What makes it even more disingenuous is that the mayor had already staked out a strong position in favor of a casino in Jersey City before flip-flopping back out of political expedience. In addition to harvesting email addresses, the survey is also a way to paper over the flip flop by being able to point to "the will of the people."

(and honestly, with all of his resources, I'd thought he'd find a better writer to do these things for him by now....)

Sadly, I agree. Everything he puts out - like the LSP petition (while a very good cause) - is to collect emails for his next campaign. And likely also sound bites about what a great job he's doing when people leave such comments. It feels disingenuous most of the time.

From a recent newsletter sent out by Mayor Fulop, link to a survey if you want to lend your voice to the casino debate:

==========================

During the past few months, we have seen an extensive debate take place throughout New Jersey on the expansion of casino gaming into northern New Jersey.

As we continue to watch this issue unfold, we felt as though an important voice in this debate was being left out. That voice is you.

An important part of leadership is taking the time to listen to feedback, and being willing to learn more about an issue that will impact Jersey City, and the region, in a big way.

I am committed to gaining a better understanding on how residents throughout the state feel about casino gaming in North Jersey. This is a decision that will impact all of us.

Please fill out the survey to share your thoughts on this issue.

I'm biased because I'm a Trump supporter but I don't think so. The most an AG could do is place JC under a microscope and make sure the administration is following all the laws. I'd think most JC residents would welcome that.

Not only did Mayor Fulop's guy Prieto fail in his AC plan (he's trying to save face by saying he'll reschedule the vote for next Wednesday), but Prieto's Speakership position is said to be in danger as well. With another murder in BeLa early this morning it's not been a good Cinco de Mayo for Mayoro Fulop.

Fulop needs an acting coach. Even if you have no skin in this game, he really comes across poorly in these interviews...

'Sunlight' is needed in the process? This from a guy whose administration who routinely fights and delays Freedom of Information Act requests, lol? How about releasing your meeting schedule, Mayor-let's see which other 'unelected' power brokers you meet with . . .

Stringer - I just watched this on NJTV - glad you posted it. Fulop did not look like his usual self - he was very defensive and Michael Aron really put him on the spot. And the mayor's last comment about not running for governor came across as disingenuous, particularly since his email blast noted he didn't care if his comments about Norcross hurt his gubernatorial efforts.
