In all seriousness, can't they be set out for trash on trash night? I would think that after being removed from BJ's (et al) lot and the company not picking them up, they become trash.

It looks like someone took the lock of the cart.. All carts now a days have the proximity locks on them..

Before someone says no they don't, I know, I'm only talking about the BJS Cart...

And if it's still there the day after that, you are within your rights to leave it in front of City Hall.

Call The JCIA at 201-432-4645 ext 0 and ask for dispatch. Tell them someone illegally dumped a shopping cart and give it's location. I have done this many times and they are usually pretty good at picking them up. If the cart is still there the next day make a follow up phone call.

You must be new to JC. The problem used to be a lot worse and there was actually an epic thread on this topic a couple years ago. The carts were even being left in the hallways and lobbies of luxury buildings downtown.

http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... =ASC&type=&mode=0&start=0

Enjoy! There was a concerted effort to pressure BJ's to install locking mechanisms on the wheels of carts once they strayed a certain distance from the store. Last I heard BJ's had agreed to do that, and there does seem to be fewer carts downtown nowadays.

I was walking down Sussex St. on my way to work and saw a Trader Joe's hand basket. HP and HC have a BJ's cart problem. Paulus Hook has a Trader Joe's hand basket issue.

Maybe Trader Joe's is starting a guerrilla marketing campaign...

i saw a lot of the carts being recovered in the parking lot with the newly installed locks on them. all we have to do is keep calling bj's with the locations of their carts so they can scoop them up and put the locks on them.

Last night my Honey and I were having a salad outside of Cosi and we watched in amusement a family push a BJ's shopping cart right by us filled with their purchases. A young boy wearing an oversized white T was doing the pushing! So much for the locks on the wheels I was reading about!!

unfortunately i'm in school almost all day from 8:30-6pm then at work all night (plus my cell phone's touch screen is broken so it's hard to dial numbers not in my phone book), if they haven't gotten it and anyone sees it, let bj's know there's one on the corner of marin and chris columbus. not sure if they got the one outside of the deli near the goody chinese restaurant yet.

Seriously though, kudos to everyone who tackled this problem.

I'm very glad I won't be seeing BJ's carts on my block anymore.

(I just hope carts from Target or Morton Williams don't start showing up now!)

You've denied the BJ's carts their freedom and now they are out for revenge -- they are stalking you!

That's great news, thanks for filling us in Jim. Thank-you BJ's for stepping up to the plate and doing something about this problem!! I would also like to extend one more gigantic thank-you to everyone on JClist who took up this cause and kept the pressure up so this problem could be resolved. Hopefully these wheel locks are the long term solution we were looking for. Stay vigilant!!

UPDATE: from BJ's today

"I am happy to inform you of the following information.
Currently we have 300 carts that have wheel locks installed.
Unfortunately the vendor came during business hours and was unable to get every cart. We currently have about 60 carts without wheel locks segregated and locked up awaiting the vendors return. We are also locking up any carts that our cart retrieval vendor picks up in the city that have not been fitted with the locks."

"BJ's Member Care Services"

Yes, please keep calling BJ's to continue picking up the stray carts. Bj's is making a great effort with this issue and we should continue to help them, 201-798-0500.

Jim

On a side note, I believe the carts have followed me across the river to Manhattan. here on 18th St. there has been a cart full of junk making it's way up and down the street all week. I've worked here almost 10 years and this is a first.

Yes. The junk-men will get it eventually.

Come on, does it really take that much effort to dial 201-798-0500 then press 0 to report the abandoned cart? Reporting it right away makes the chances of that cart being recovered by BJs and off our streets much quicker. Personally, I programmed the number into my cell and I call it immediately when I see a cart. I reported one on Monday and two yesterday. It's a quick call and they seem to appreciate it.

As an aside, how do you know they're reading this thread?

There's one inside Bus Shelter #6 at Exchange Place (it's chained and locked) and another one behind The Gotham on York Street (across from St. Peters Prep). And, no, I'm not calling BJ's to let them know because I know they're reading this.

Too early to declare a win, but I know one law-suit happy person on here will be upset that his "charm" is being taken away.

Yes, I think they did start installing wheel locks because now there are clusters of carts near the exits of the lot on Second Street and they all seem to have bright (new looking) orange locks on the front wheels.

I don't want to jinx anything but I have to ask, did anyone notice there is alot less BJ's carts parked around? I think they have installed the wheelocks on some of the carts and it's having an effect. I walk to the path everyday from Brunswick (straight down Newark Ave) and have only spotted 1 cart, anyone else agree?

Yes please.

This thread accomplished it's mission by getting BJs to take some responsibility for these wayward carts, so just call BJs and report them there.

Makes sense, right?

really? I have something to retract when you've refered to all the "complainers" as yuppie scumbags? don't think so, why don't you tell us where you live and I'll be happy to roll ALL the carts I find laying around up to your door so you'll never be at a loss for one!

You'd better get a lawyer now if you don't realize that "yuppie scumbag" is not a libelous statement, but knowingly falsely accusing someone of a crime is.

I'm still willing to accept a statement that you did not intend to accuse me of criminal activity. It does not need to reach the level of an apology.

Just as an anonymous poster making a generalized accusation about another anonymous poster is not libel, because your identity is protected. Genius.

Yeah, real nice. White t-shirts and shopping carts??? Get a life. Innocent youth from your neighborhood who can't defend themselves from your racial cybermockery. Just more racial profiling supported on this site. You're hilarious. I hope one of these kids gets you one of these nights. A-Hole.
