Simon's Parking Lot at Grove & Montgomery would probably cut you a deal for longer-term parking. But try to do better than $7/day might be ambitious.

I used this agency when my company had an overseas visitor come for 6 weeks (in 2008):

http://www.furnishedquarters.com/

They have units in Grove Pointe and in Newport.

The visitor stayed at Grove Pointe and was very happy.

This thread reminded me about the pretzel shop and I couldn't resist stopping in at lunchtime yesterday.

The pretzels are delicious and an incredible bargain at 3 for $2.

Goes to show you there is no such thing as bad publicity.

A shopping cart on the block is far from the only thing I have to worry about in my part of downtown. I may be two blocks from Van Vorst Park, but I'm less than a block from the Pathmark and the public housing on York St. and Brunswick St. A lot of people on this board will tell you I live in the slums.

In my seven years here I feel fortunate that there's been no significant crimes committed against me or my neighbors, but the stability of the block is tenuous as best.

I'm of the mindset that the sight of McDonald's garbage on the street sends the signal that that's acceptable here, and it begets more of the same. Therefore that litter must be cleaned up immediately. Same goes for booze bottles, and same goes for the bits of broken car windows when that occasionally happens. Having shopping carts spill out of the parking lot 24 hours a day would be yet another thing to be constantly clearing away to keep the order.

A neighborhood that gives the impression that it tolerates disorder and filth is a breeding ground for trouble.

You need to keep your street clean and orderly to communicate to passers-by that those are the standards of this block, that the people who live here have pride of place, and that we are watching to ensure those standards are upheld.

The simple fact is that wheel locks or none, quarter system or none, the Hamilton Park area is littered with Shop Rite, BJ's, Target, and Bed Bath & Beyond carts, and the Van Vorst Park area is not littered with Pathmark carts. That's thanks to the bollards. And I don't care how fast they would come pick them up if you called them. I don't want to see them on our streets in the first place.

So, I'm sorry if people who live in other neighborhoods find this system doesn't suit them. Living near the Pathmark, it suits me just fine, since we already have constant McDonald's, booze bottle, and plastic bag litter to deal with thanks to the shopping center. Rather not add stray shopping carts to that mix. Like Croft suggested, get a "granny cart".

I'd be curious to know if anybody who lives near there feels differently.

Personally, I hope one thing they don't get rid of is the bollards that keep the shopping carts from spilling out into the neighborhood and running into cars parked on the surrounding streets (like mine, for example).

Is it just me?

I disagree. I don't think people's civil rights should be decided by popular vote. In the case of California, the people have just decided to nullify the marriages and make bastards out of the children of 20,000 couples they probably don't even know and whose pursuit of happiness had not and probably would never have affected their own lives or relationships in any way. Talk about tyranny of the majority. It's disgusting.

No no no... don't do it.

The drain on the northeast corner of Grand & Grove (in front of Taqueria) backs up every time there's a heavy rain and every garden level apartment on the block gets flooded. And it's not just water coming in from outside, the sh*t also bubbles up your bathtub drain.

And we're not talking 100-year floods here.... this happens easily 2 or 3 times a year.

No, seriously.... it's horrific and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

You really want to come home to a mess like that if it rains while you're at work, or away for the weekend?

Friends of mine just moved out from a garden level apartment on the block and they swear it's the best thing they ever did.

I went to Dr. Katz in JSQ once and wasn't happy.

That was about 3 years ago. Since then I've been going to

Michael Ferranti, PA
111 Broadway Ste 800
New York, NY 10006-1956
Phone: (212) 732-2777

The office is just outside the WTC PATH so since I live downtown, travel-wise it's about the same time for me to go there as it would be to go to JSQ.

I couldn't be happier with the treatment I've received.

There's one inside Bus Shelter #6 at Exchange Place (it's chained and locked) and another one behind The Gotham on York Street (across from St. Peters Prep). And, no, I'm not calling BJ's to let them know because I know they're reading this.

Where is there a vacant lot at Washington & 6th (aka Thomas Gangemi Drive)?

SW corner: Double Tree
NW corner: new hotel under construction
NE corner: office tower w/ light up diagonal stripe
SE corner: Avalon Cove

Was this the Pep Boys site project?

Re: Van Vorst Park---Dog Run

Everybody who lives in the southwest corner of downtown (you know, the "bad" neighborhood near the Pathmark ) cuts through the park at all hours day & night on the way home from Grove St. and the PATH.

OK, so maybe the park is technically closed at 10 pm, but no one just strolling through on the way home has been bothered by the police since they're not "using" the park (i.e. to sleep in it), they're just quietly passing through.

Dog walkers have also always been in the park after 10 pm and have provided de facto security to those us of just passing through. Pre-dog run I never heard a complaint about them being there past closing time since I guess the dogs on-leash keep quieter.

Seems like the unfortunate by-product of the dog run is that dogs off-leash get more worked up playing with other dogs and tend to bark a lot.

If this continues to raise the ire of the Mr. X's on the perimeter, and the police continue to be called, the 10 pm park closing will eventually be enforced even for those of us just passing through on the way home.

If that were to happen, you better believe us tough-ass people in the Pathmark 'hood will be seriously pissed.

The city has a unique opportunity with Jersey Avenue, because it can serve as a connector for the various parks. The street connects Hamilton Park, the 6th Street Embankment, Van Vorst Park, and Liberty State Park. Make it a pedestrian friendly streetscape with a bike lane and turn that corridor into a "string of pearls" that city residents can enjoy, not a heavily driven auto route.

Absolutely true and here's how the city will squander this opportunity: The developers of Liberty Harbor North will pressure city hall for better road access to the shopping area they are planning there, the city will fold, and then sell it to the public by saying that the real reason is that better emergency access to the medical center is required. It's probably a done deal already.

Jeez I've only been here 5 years and am becoming a total cynic already.

The J. Owen Grundy Pier Park at Exchange Place has been closed for several weeks, but on Monday a broader area was fenced off, and today they cut down all of the trees. It looks awful at the moment, but hopfully improvements are being made there finally. I'm assuming the work that's going on there has to do with the bond sale mentioned in the article. I'm surprised it's getting started so quickly. Does anybody have more detail on this project? Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I live in a 6-unit self-managed condo building. We were notified of inspections exactly the same way -- note taped to the front door. I thought it was some kind of joke but it wasn't. This was about three years ago. The inspection was pretty painless. All we were cited for was not having a CO detector. They gave us 2 weeks to have one installed in the unit. No penalties.

I got there even quicker on public transportation: take the PATH to 33rd st, walk one block to Penn Station, take any LIRR train stopping at Jamaica (try for an express = 20 minutes), then hop on the AirTrain at Jamaica station. It took about an hour from Grove St and was more comfortable than taking the A train, despite all the transfers. Maybe not so good if you've got lots of luggage, though!
