The JCIA is well aware of the graffiti along Newark, Monmouth, Brunswick, Jersey and Columbus. They have visited all the sites and took photos of every location and the JCIA will follow normal procedures on each location once the weather gets better. The JCIA must mail graffiti removal release to the locations in question for approval from the building owners to remove the graffiti and have to wait for the weather to get warmer before it can be removed. They are also working in conjuction with the JCPA to follow the tagging trends through out the City

Lets hope spring arrives early this year so we can be rid of these eye sores. Any idea if puxatony phil will see his shadow Wednesday?

Due to the current economy, National Night Out will be hosted in two
parks this year. We, the East District, will join the North District at
Pershing Field (Manhattan and Central Ave.) from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
As with years past, there will be free food, beverages, children's
entertainment, give-aways and safety information. And because we are
not having the event in the East District, free transportation will be
available. A bus will begin transporting people from Hamilton Park to
Pershing Field at 6:00 p.m. and will, for the duration of the event,
respond to both parks for pick-ups and drop-offs

I honestly just don't see this streetscape project as an improvement on anything.

2 things would make Newark Ave look a TON better:

1) LOTS of trees (at least one every 25 feet or so, on both sides of the street)

2) Red brick paver sidewalks (not shoddily finished drab concrete)

I know those 2 things are a bit pricey, but I'd rather wait a few years and have those improvements done, than have the city spend probably a FORTUNE for really no improvement to the eye.

Between this, and the Columbus Drive debacle, that's not one but TWO missed opportunities, that we'll be forced to look at and deal with for many years.

Phase III as I know it up to the hill to Harsimus Cemetery does have plans for adding many trees and for the brick thermo paver style crosswalks. This being a Federally funded project means however that ONLY Newark will be redone and it wont reach around to the side streets like Phase I & II. I can not speak about the street scape from Harsimus Cemetery on up as I have not seen the plans.

From the Hudson County Improvement Authority only plastic with #1 & #2 are recycled.

Commingled: Each municipality in Hudson County
collects commingled glass, food and beverage containers,
auminum cans, tin or bi-metal cans, and plastic
containers (#1 and #2 only). All containers should be
rinsed (it is not necessary to remove caps, lids or
labels) and placed together in a waterproof receptacle.

YES!

1- Historical remnant of Jersey City?s railroad and industrial past.
2- Become a future segment through the Bergan Arches to the 2,600 mile East Coast Greenway.
3- Habitat for a variety of species of plants and animals.
4- Haven for migratory birds and butterflies.
5- Soaks up ground water easing the strain on the Municipal sewer system.
6- Plant life absorbs carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the atmosphere in our urban environment.
7- Not to mention the Embankment is a Municipal Landmark and on the State Register of Historic Places.

The Embankment will be a world class Park in our own back yard, a place to escape and enjoy nature all in the context of City living.

Can YOU say New York City High Line??? http://www.thehighline.org/

And could you imagine the Holy Rosary La Festa Italiana with out the embankment across the street, mio dio.

I'm sorry you are not able to attend Tomorrows meeting and hope you will be able to make May 12th meeting.

With the little information I have gathered here is the breakdown on some of these incidents you mentioned.

The shooting on First & Brunswick was an unfortunate argument that got out of hand between two aquantainces.
The victim was uncooperative with the Police and was unwilling to file a Police report. Without the cooperation of the victim the Police were not able to follow up on this case.

As for the mugging on 2nd St. the assailant was apprehended shortley after the incident.

As far as the driving accidents and loud and lewd behavior from the bar this is the first time I have heard of it. Has anyone called the Police or filed a repot? If you have have ANY concerns regarding First St. there are some things you can do tho let the Association and the Police know.

Regarding the incident at Second and Colgate on Monday morning, below is the official response from the East District Police Department:

?On Monday, December 29, 2008 around 6:00 a.m. an incident took place in the area of Second and Colgate where a victim was able to get away from an actor who may have been trying to rob the victim.

Due to the detective?s follow-up, the victim's description and photo identification, an arrest was made yesterday, Tuesday, December 30, 2008."

Many thanks to the Police Department for their quick response and resolution to this extremely unfortunate incident. It is a strong reminder for all of us to remain vigilant this holiday season.

Also, the next Captain's meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at M.S. 4, everyone is welcome so please stop by in support of your Police Department.

UPDATE: from BJ's today

"I am happy to inform you of the following information.
Currently we have 300 carts that have wheel locks installed.
Unfortunately the vendor came during business hours and was unable to get every cart. We currently have about 60 carts without wheel locks segregated and locked up awaiting the vendors return. We are also locking up any carts that our cart retrieval vendor picks up in the city that have not been fitted with the locks."

"BJ's Member Care Services"

Yes, please keep calling BJ's to continue picking up the stray carts. Bj's is making a great effort with this issue and we should continue to help them, 201-798-0500.

Jim

On a side note, I believe the carts have followed me across the river to Manhattan. here on 18th St. there has been a cart full of junk making it's way up and down the street all week. I've worked here almost 10 years and this is a first.

Jclxz ?

I said it before and I?ll say it again. What planet do you live on?

From what information I gathered each BJ?s cart costs them approximately $125.00ea. Tim has worked at the store for a year and a half and has reported that over 1000 carts have disappeared. That?s a grand total of $125,000.00. At even 1 cart at $125.00 I assume that it would be considered petty larceny, a term used for theft of objects usually under $500.00. Guess what? Taking a BJ?s cart is theft, period. If you need to get your groceries home from BJ?s then plan a little better or, heaven forbid, purchase a granny cart. Act responsibly.

I recieved a call today from Tim Hebert as well confirming the installation of an improved wheel lock system for their carts. The installation and retreval of abandoned carts will take aproximately two weeks. To assist in the retreval of the carts please call Tim when you see one so BJ's can pick it up as soon as possible.

Thanks to everyone!

Elvis, jaah37, pchops, and gang

Here?s what I did. First I e-mailed BJ?s Customer Care center to make them aware of this cart issue in Downtown Jersey City and then told them of this web site and the ?cart? thread and suggested they read through the entries and look at the photos. I received a cordial response back apologizing for the inconvenience and thanking me for bringing this to their attention. The Regional and General Manager?s were contacted regarding this issue and I was told I will be contacted upon BJ?s customer service receiving more info.

I was also given the Jersey City General Manager?s name; Tim Hebert and his phone number is 201-798-0500. I called him today and spoke to him about the cart issue and he was friendly and polite and said he is fully aware the problem but didn?t know about this thread. I asked him what kind of solution he could offer and he said that he contracts with a company to go around the City and pick up errant carts but people need to call him when they see one because he can get a truck over to pick it up before it disappears and is moved to another location.

Also the Regional Manager?s name is Mauro Amato and he is based out of Paramus and the store phone number is 201-909-9800.

Although Tim Hebert?s solution could work in the short term this obviously is not a long term solution. I would suggest EVERYONE posting on and reading this thread not only e-mail BJ?s but call Tim to report abandoned carts and locations, so they can be carted off, as well as call Mauro Amato to ask what kind of long term solution is BJ?s is considering to resolve this problem. Together we can make a difference.

BJ?s e-mail is membercare@bjs.accentonline.com

Good Luck, Jim

Since it is a problem with a few areas of JC getting each areas resident association on board would be a start. Or as I said, maybe bringing the issue up to Councilman Fulop could work. He could probably help formulate a plan to combat this at least.

There is an association, it's the Village Neighborhood Association and you can email concerns to info@jcvillage.org. Although this is a quality of life issue and can be brought up at the Association meetings to get everyone on board, ultimately it's the residents who have to keep on the lookout and make the calls.

I'm at Brunswick & 2nd and find the carts everywhere there. Maybe it's from the Hudson Reporter being delivered on Saturdays. Have you seen the family's pushing the carts down the street full of papers? By the time they get to the end of the Village they just leave them when there done. I wonder if the Hudson Reporter knows how their papers are distributed?

Nickie,

The "Italian Village" is very safe especially your area at 1st and colgate. Carmine's Pizza on 1st & Brunswick attracts the East District patrol officers there for dinner and there is usually a police presence is the neighborhood 24/7. With that said it is a City so always be aware of your surroundings. The Village does have an association the "Village Neighborhood Association" they meet the last Thursday every month at 7pm at the Dr. Conte school P.S. #5 alley entrance on 3rd St. If you're interested in joining or have any questions you can e-mail the President , Rob at info@jcvillage.org. This months meeting is being held Thursday May 1st. Aslo the Village area boundries are from Christopher Columbus on the North side to 6th St on the South side but includes Holy Rosary Church and from Coles St. on the west side to the turnpike. Hope this helps. Welcome to the Village.
