First off - what exactly was it I said that made you assume I was a man. I am in fact a young lady. Secondly - hell no I did not agree to pay any damages and I did not admit fault. I simply admitted I was going against traffic. It was day light, I came to a complete stop, I spent the time to look in every direction before crossing, and gave the appropiate cues. I admit that I was going the wrong way of course and perhaps it could have been more difficult to hit me with your suv if I was going with the flow of traffic - but like someone above me said - first rule of driving is dont hit people - and it doesnt take too much effort to look in both directions beofre crossing an intersection.

Wait, JAC admits he was going the wrong way and Bogart uses this as a way to attack JC drivers? I was just wondering if JAC, after admitting he could have gotten a ticket, agreed to pay for any damage to the car.

Sorry to hear about your accident, Jac. Your story is a reminder that while a bicyclist's making eye contact with a driver is a safety procedure in most parts of the country, in JC it may be regarded as an affront to the driver's dignity and therefore a challenge to a race to get through the intersection.

Hey all - I do not post often but have lived and lurked here for years. I'm the one that just got hit but the car on Erie. Nice to meet you all - flattered to have made jclist. That being said - yes I was in the wrong to be going the wrong way down the road - but that being said - the entire incident was pretty strange. I was riding a really slow cruiser and had stopped before going further through the intersection. I had thought I made proper eye contact with the driver and then as I crossed - I learned quickly they did not see me and accelerated. No broken bones - but lets say the right side of my body is going to be quite colorful in the morning and I will be nursing a limp for a few days. I was a bit upset that the police man called to the scene started telling me how he could be writing me a ticket if he wanted to while he was telling me to get into the ambulance. I get it dude - but a little sensitivity.
What REALLY sucks - is this was my back up bike. My better and newer bike was just stolen two Friday nights ago outside of Skinners Loft - a block from where i just got hit. Properly chained and everything - someone clipped my lock and rode off into the sunset.

Riding a bicycle around here is dangerous enough when you're where you're supposed to be. Going the wrong way on these streets is just plain nuts.

someone just ran the stop sign at first and Erie, and hit a bicyclist (who was going the wrong way). no injuries, miraculously, but who's more at fault here?

since this is jersey city, the question is pretty academic.
my suggestion is the following. let's have fundraiser. once we have roughly $10k in small denomination unmarked bills, we could go to the relevant guy working at the mayor's action bureau. i heard guy catrillo, really nice guy who is on top of things. he is the man who calls the shots. we could give him the money and i am sure as friends of his, we would be getting a nice red light on the corner of 10th and erie pretty soon.... I guess I was more curious as to why they decided to do this @ 3rd and Erie. Seems like a odd place to put one in. The crosswalk at 8th and Erie makes more sense. The brick looks nice, now if they could do the rest of Erie, it would like it was planned, instead of the half a$$ed job the JC does most of the time.

This intersection is awful. Some people don't realize a blinking red light means a stop sign. People coming the other way don't realize a blinking yellow means proceed with caution. They either speed thru, or the opposite which is almost come to a complete stop - then speed up, faking out the cars coming the other way who think they are being let thru. They should just get rid of the lights and put in 4 stop signs.

These "new" cross walks can be found all over Bergen County. From what i have seen they have held up better than just pavement.

I just had the pleasure of fixing a flat tire at Erie and 6th - just past the stop light - I would gamble that 90% of the people who drive down Erie dont go 25 MPH.
The city could easily make some quick cash if they just started nailing people for speeding.

Saw they put a new brick crosswalk at 3rd and Erie last week. Why? I think it looks nice, but just a little out of place. Are the rest of the intersections going to be done? and how did this get accomplished in 2 days when it takes months to repair even a small portion of a sidewalk that has been ripped up.

It also has to do with the fact that cars park too close to the corners, blocking the sight line for vehicles at the intersection. Much of the problem could be addressed by building curb extensions, which would also have solved most of the problems along Erie Street had the city built the extensions when they replaced all the street corners along Erie this past spring.

It wouldn't be so dangerous if people actually knew what the blinking lights meant. But this is JC, where ignorance is bliss for some and collision for others.

I don't understand why it's so hard to get a traffic light put up in this city. It is a city after all and I would say there are many intersections that could use one. I guess it's just another example of how the city is run the "old school" way where nothing gets done the right way.

I feel like I take my life in my hands every time I walk, ride or drive through that intersection. Of course, it's one of many I feel that way about.

I was cooking dinner and I heard the brakes and then the thump of the hit and the smash. I looked out the window and saw one car on 10th crunched - I could not see the other. I agree - a full light is needed at this corner. I've seen many crashes at this spot for the past ten years.

There was just an accident at the intersection of 10th & Erie where the blinking light is. There really needs to be a full traffic light at this intersection. The people sitting outside the Embankment were treated to a front row seat....however, what if the accident was worse and one of the cars got thrown into the outside seating area of the Embankment. Does anyone agree we need a full light there?
FYI - I've written to our councilman about this in the past and it was considered as a need, but it didn't get approval.

another wreck just occurred at the corner of 1st and Erie (everybody's okay).
this time, however, there are no cars parked at the corners, so no one was blocking the view of the guy who was (supposed to be) stopped at the stop sign. people are swell.

I know the Reporters read these blogs, and the best thing they can do is to come to First Street between 1:25 and 1:40 on any day but Wednesday. Not only will they find cars parked in the crosswalks at Erie, they will see the Parking Authority bypass all the policemen owned cars parked on First from Jersey to Grove, ticketing only cars that don't belong to policemen. While they are at it they can then walk from First to Bay, and see the Street cleaner completely bypass the block between Grove and Erie, with more police owned cars on that block.

send to your councilperson, they have by choice assumed the responsibility of sticking their neck out (and in the case of Ward E, getting wacked).
also, send to both the Jersey City Reporter and Jersey Journal. There have been recent articles on Erie St. safety issues. Quote:

so how do I report this without getting myself on the JCPD hit list? sorry, but based on my limited experience with JC's finest, I have little faith that dropping the dime on this asshat will do anything but draw undue attention to my own self.
