My hero. But it's spelled Goetz. "You don't look too bad, here's another". Interestingly, all of his attackers with the exception of the one whom Goetz had paralyzed, went on to rape and rob. Kids??? You got to be kidding me.

I think the fact that they're kids is relevant because that probably means that they haven't paid anyone off, aren't an important part of any well organized crime ring and ought to be easy to catch. Also: it could well be that some of these guys are a lot worse than others, but it doesn't do any favors to the ones who can possibly be salvaged to let them run around with friends who are clubbing people with table legs. It's not liberal or progressive to let a kid go around attacking people till he gets shot or commits a capital offense.

You are so right. These are not "kids" in the sense that we all carry of kids. They are thugs. They are a menace to our neighborhoods and they should be dealt with by the police. But as I have said before in these pages, the police are very "careful" here about apprehending perps and/or potential perps for fear of legal reprisal. So, until we get a pro-active police force, we will have to be content with street criminals and their impunity. But at the same time, we really do have to make a more noticeable stink about this new bunch of dangerous young men which seems to have invaded us in the past six months or so. I have heard so many people remark that they have encountered this or similar group and been really frightenend at being followed, taunted, etc. Now that someone has, unfortunately, been injured we can use that attack as leverage to get the cops to pay some attention.

Calling them kids just informs people that they were young. I think you are reading too much into this.

Why are we calling predatory thugs "kids"?
So that we don't offend them or their apologists? Somebody hits my wife with a pipe or a brick on the head and I'd blow them away. With glee. Age notwithstanding.

This was on the Jersey Journal site. Apparently these jackasses are still on the street.
Friday, June 30, 2006 Attacked on 9th St. Wednesday evening A 39-year-old man from Clinton ended up in the hospital after he was attacked by two boys while walking in Jersey City Wednesday night, police said yesterday. Advertisement The man told police he was walking west on Ninth Street near Erie Street at 9 p.m. when he was struck on the head by someone standing behind him, reports said. The attackers then hit him in the back with an unknown object before he fought them off, police said. The man was treated for a head wound and cut to his lower back at the Jersey City Medical Center, police said. Police brought in one juvenile for investigation, but he was later released, police said. - JACK HERMAN

This bunch of kids has been around Harsimus and lower
Hamilton for a while now. Coming home after dark, you often see them roaming around. They clearly do not live her; probably from Holland Gardens, the project up by Salvation Army. We've always had trouble with kids from that place, who come down here at nite to have fun. The cops don't seem to take the threat seriously -- never have. My companion was followed home by this bunch the other nite, but managed to lose them by cutting in and out of cross-streets. He was very shaken when he got home. We made a phone call to the police, but what do they do if no crime occurred? Gotta wait til someone gets badly injured for some momentary police attention to happen. I hope reports of these incidents reach the neighborhood associations meetings, where the cops usually send a rep.

This is why Hamilton Park residents requested that the Erie Garage remain staffed, those guys used to look out for us on that corner!

Compstat does not deal with the biggest issue facing our police department which is an understaffed force. Case in point. pchops recently posted that the midnight police shift has about 10 to 12 officers. I am assuming that they are paired which leaves 5 to 6 police cars on patrol. Now it is safe to say that all of the calls to 911 and the non-emergency number keep these 5 to 6 cars busy. So when a police officer finishes their work at a traffic accident they are called to deal with a domestic dispute. It all comes down to the fact that the police department would love to flood areas with cops, unfortunately they do not have enough people to do it. And in all honesty downtown is one of the safer areas of jersey city. It is tough to get any sympathy from the police higher ups when we are competing with places like ocean avenue. I have mentioned this before, if you want action, hit them where it hurts. Protest ribbon cutting ceremonies, open houses, and anything else that potential jersey city residents would attend. When there is a line of applicants at grovepoint let them know that a councilman's wife was mugged just a few blocks away.

Sam, et al........
I have no doubt this is the same set of delinquents that I chased away (twice) from Jersey Avenue between 7th and 8th........once around 8:45 and again at about 9:15 or so. I suspect the piece of pipe used in the assault was part of broken table pieces (of all things) that they had been carrying around. God only knows where in the neighborhood it came from before they dismantled it, but one was clearly holding a small table top piece, and two others were carrying metal leg assemblies. Actually, what had gotten my attention orginally was their loud yelling and laughter as they were scattering all over the sidewalk those newspaper/flier bundles that get left on doorsteps. So, assuming it's the same bunch (early teens, about seven of them), it seems I caught them on their way to and on their way from the incident at 9th and Erie. If I can provide any help in this, email me at: dhanlon101@hotmail.com I take no joy in saying that if one of them had a swung that pipe at me, I'd be in Hudson County Correctional right now. I don't care what their ages (and I'd gladly fight it out in court), but if someone swings a potentially lethal object, it's open season. Reach out to me if the evening's events need another voice.

I'm afraid it will be a long while until comptstat sends the boys in blue to our 'hood--we're still probably the safest part of JC, despite the recent blurts of crime. Back in the 1980s, I think a drug dealer was hanged from a tree in Hamilton Park by a rival drug dealer. Not saying we should be complacent about our relatively safe neighborhood, or that nothing should be done, just putting things in perspective. When the St. Francis development is done, I expect the park will become even safer. Until then, stay alert, call the cops with your concerns, attend neighborhood meetings, etc.

yeah, i know....
thought the idea of compstat was to flood areas with a series of proplems with cops until things cleared up. where is fulop on important issues like this? he always seems to favor "dog run" type things over what is becoming an increasing problem in his ward. are we ever going to get an update on the muggings last week?

If I were on the jury, I would side with the guy who was mugged. If people physically attack other people or invade those people's homes, they have no right to expect the victim to respond with anything less than deadly force. And I understand that, sure, in some cases, the attackers might be fundamentally decent kids who are just out for fun. But mugging someone, for whatever reason, and not expecting to be killed is like jumping from the top of a 10-story building and not expecting the ground to kill you. I think the problem, here, is that killing the mugger would be emotionally satisfying but might not do much to solve the problem in the long term if poverty, bad parenting, bad schools, etc. are creating a steady supply of new muggers.

While I do not know the exact time of the incident, I do know my neighbor called me at 10:15 to tell me about this.do not From this I would ascertain around 8 pm. But it was not a very late hour.
I left my neighbor a voice mail asking the specific time and will post it when he gets back to me.

Sam, how late in the evening? Please post any follow-up you have. This, plus the mugging the other day by a couple a "yoots" means that summer has begun officially in JC. It's be good to know if there is progress in apprehending them or preventing further attacks.
GWB, he said the guy was in his 40s.

There's a big difference between whether he would be charged and whether he would be convicted. If it went too far and the usual grievance groups popped up, maybe charges to do some CYA.
I think that, if you managed to get the pipe away from one of a group, that both the law and your fellow citizens in the form of a jury would give you a tremendous amount of latitude in how you decide it is most appropriate to defend yourself. I would imagine that the "reasonable man" standard would come into play here- Is the level of force this person employed reasonable given the circumstances? Given the fact that you are justified in shooting and killing an intruder in your home (generally), I would imagine a serious beat down in the street for would-be muggers would go over without too much comment. Now here's a question- Obviously these clowns picked the wrong guy. Was it a young man these animals attacked? That always seemed to me to be exceedingly stupid, since young men generally don't run around with a ton of jewelry or other fenceable items, and are in posession of testosterone, which makes reactions under intense pressure erratic and unpredictable at best. Disturbing, because that is far from a seedy corner over there. Little isolated, but not what I would consider high risk. GWB

Do you think it would have been perfectly fine/legal if this gentleman hit some of these thugs with the same metal pipe he was threatened/assaulted with? Or would he have been brought in for striking a minor even though he would have been defending himself? Because, If this was me and I had the opportunity to stike back- I would. I think me + metal pipe = gang of minors up to no good.
Thoughts?

This is great news. Doesn't Jersey City have a curfew for kids? Maybe the police probably have a legal right to haul the kids in just because they're outside unsupervised after curfew. That would help eliminate the need for us to actually see a mugging, drug deal, etc. before calling in to complain about kids like this.

Assault/wilding incident on 9th and Erie

Last evening one of my neighbors called to advise of a reported assault on a late 40s something man, buy a gang of young teens between the ages of 13 to 15 at the corner of Erie and 9th. The gang of teens assaulted the victim with a metal pipe. The victim was able to wrangle the pipe away from one of the teens, who then fled. My neighbor brought the victim to the East District police department. Later that evening that same neighbor saw what appeared to be the same group of teens. At the same time the police also saw the teens and chased them.
I think there may have been an apprehension.
