Jersey City Krispy Kreme attracts long lines -- and illegal parking

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal

The hottest new attraction in Downtown Jersey City is Krispy Kreme, where day and night lines of people wait for 45 minutes or longer for freshly fried doughnuts.

Judging by the lines of cars outside the Krispy Kreme entrance, the doughnut chain attracts a ton of illegal parkers, too.

There is no street parking directly outside the entrance of the shop, located on the first floor of a 19-story office building, but that hasn't stopped its patrons from illegally parking in the no-parking zones along Marin Boulevard and Columbus Drive.

Yup. You might say they're making a lot of...dough.

I'll be here all week.

The donuts are great but the cops need to clear out all the morons that are parking illegally over there.

I remember driving all the way down to maybe Toms River many years ago when Krispy Kreme opened down there. It was jam packed for days or weeks! And now it's an Arbys. The doughnuts are good, but the crowds may not last. Dunkin makes their money on good coffee, I don't even know how KK's coffee (koffee?) is.

It goes without saying that the cops directing traffic right at that intersection appear to be oblivious or indifferent to the Krispy Kreme congestion.

Stop getting your big nose in other people's business and enjoy the donuts.

This happens outside of Dunkin Donut on Grove & Columbus too.

As we know, JC's parking enforcement is a joke.

The donuts are great! Coffee, however, is only average but is relatively cheaper than Dunkin- i think the cost of a medium at KK is the same price as a small one at DD.

For Krispy Kreme, Jersey City finds way around chain store ban

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
Email the author | Follow on Twitter
on February 10, 2017 at 1:39 PM, updated February 10, 2017 at 1:49 PM

JERSEY CITY -- The new Krispy Kreme, located steps from the Grove Street PATH station, is in the perfect spot for commuters looking to grab a coffee and a hot glazed doughnut.

It's also inside a zone Jersey City approved two years ago that limits where chain stores like Krispy Kreme can open. Mayor Steve Fulop was behind that measure, saying at the time it would preserve the character of Downtown neighborhoods and help mom-and-pop retailers thrive.

...Krispy Kreme was allowed to move in, the source said, "because (Fulop) likes the doughnuts."

Pretty funny that this place is packed, but if one was to go by the usual JCLIST post bemoaning "chain places", a recurrent claim is that JC residents, particularly those in DTJC, don't care for such places. And, yet, these "chains" are always busy... drive past Chili's on any given weekend evening and you will see it is always packed, and the Domino's on Newark is seemingly busy non stop (I see their delivery men all over DTJC at all times) and even the fast food places like McD, DD, Chipotle are making brisk business all the time.

I'm not Fulop's biggest fan, but I think that poster is right that this is a point for Fulop.
