I'd like to see a map that shows ALL 911 calls compared to police no shows and response times.

Some people around my neighborhood think a call for help is faster in the affluent neighborhoods then in our poor ones!

Especially the ability to post comments.

any idea what employee and why? sounds like another crazy ladies night in hoboken

These guido guinnea bouncers are way too over the top.

3. rachelezoe | January 31st, 2007 at 11:37 pm
The owners are assholes. One of the owners hits on every female and of course is married. Real class.

4. potatochip | February 1st, 2007 at 9:33 am
the owners are great here, my boyfriend used to hang out with them when they were a little younger, so I?ve gotten to know them through him. rachel, i think you need to understand the difference between being friendly/flirting and what hitting on means.

your probably one of those beasts that goes here on ladies night, eats for free and orders a water.

Ross

At least someone from downtown still has a sense of humour and isn't living in fear of saying hello to their neighbor who may not look exactly like they do. After all who really wants to associate with people who don't have that perfect pale skin (or bottled tan) buried under their perfect page 82 J Crew khaki's and pale blue polo shirt outfit.

Oh and just one other safety note... I've heard that there are several teenaged boys playing in the park on wayne street who have been using this dangerous orange ball... It's about a foot and half in diameter and could cause injury if it hits you. So watch out!!! They usually throw it up towards a pole and basket sort of contraption, but it could carom off and hit you in the head.

I nominate CRAPKIN as word of the day. Thanks for the chuckle.

You'd better have a lot of virtual pins for all the crimes reported here:

1. Youths wearing long white t-shirts, probably gangmembers
2. Youths not wearing long white t-shirts, probably gangmembers
3. Yuppies using dead-end street as park, probably gangmembers
4. Dog off the leash, children menaced
5. Children off the leash, dogs menaced
6. CRAPKINS!!
7. Happy Hour at LITM not happy today
8. Lamb at "It's Greek to Me" was off
9. Black men looking at white women, suspect hate crime
10. White men looking at black women, suspect hate crime
11. White men looking at white men, don't know what to think, but strangely arousing
12. Neighbor's grill too close to my condo (but more importantly, he's NOT cooking Kobe beef)
13. Jersey City apparently not Georgetown, the suburbs, or Australia
14. Mayor drinking beer, DOMESTIC GODDAMN BEER!
15. Steve Fulop apparently can't fly
16. That cute girl in the office won't go out with me

The list of crimes goes on...

If I was 'one of nine council people' I would demand Police Statistic reports - who are the Police accountable to, if not the elected representatives of the community?

I would expect a copy of the Police Statistics monthly, even if it wasn't part of my portfolio as a council person, then discuss ways of helping the council person with that portfolio and Police Chief on proactive ways to address the concerns or needs of the community regardless of what 'ward' I represent.

I would have thought it was in everyone's interest (elected council representatives) to look at crime and its social impact on the community?

Maybe we should have a close look on the job description and Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) that a Police Chief is required to be assessed on - They shouldn't have an option on whether they need to produce statistics or not.

As any public servant that generates an income from taxes, transparency should be a 'mission statement'.

Justi, at the last Downtown JC Watch meeting, Steve briefly mentioned his problems obtaining crime stats (among others) from the former police chief, and that he expects to have a better working relationship with the new one.

Perhaps you can get these stats directly from the JCPD as a concerned resident.

the map on Steve Fulop's site no longer seems to be working. Did too much crime blow out the system?

Steve, could you get this up again? I want to get on the speakers ist and let the city council have it during the next evening meeting, and I need to get my ducks in a row.

To Steven:
Yes, this website is a great idea and shows a lot of initiative (I can imagine the rest of the city council wishing you'd stop making them look bad! :)

However, it's ultimately only as good as the data. Below is something I pasted in from this very site, apparently from the Police Dept. themselves (Dina Reilly) - this refers to the 4 muggings on the night of 10/14, which don't show on the map:

"Good morning.

The following are four robbery incidents that occured over this past weekend.

The first robbery occured on 10/14/05 b/t 8:00 and 8:30 p.m. on the corner of Varick and Bright St.
- 2 victims robbed at gun point.
- Three actors described as follows:
- 1. Black male, about 6'1" wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans
- 2. Black male, wearing a black sweater and blue jeans
- 3. Black male, wearing a black sweater

The second robbery occured on 10/14/05 at 9:45 p.m. on York and Jersey Ave.
- One victim robbed at gun point
- Three actors described as follows: (possbily the same actors from above)
- 1. Black male, 15-17 years of age, wearing a black canvas jacket, blue jeans and
baseball cap
Actor #1 brandished a black in color handgun
- 2. Black male, 15-18 years of age, wearing a gray tee-shirt and blue jeans
- 3. Black male, 15-17 years of age, wearing blue jeans

The third robbery occured on 10/14/05 at 11:30 p.m. on Bright and Varick St.
- One victim robbed at gun point.
- Three actors described as follows: (again, possbily the same actors from above)
- 1. Black male, late teens, 5'6" / 5'7," slim build, wearing a hooded sweatshirt
Actor #1 brandished a black in color handgun
- 2. Black male, late teens, 5'10," medium build, wearing a hooded sweatshirt
- 3. Black male, 6', thin build, wearing a hooded sweatshirt

The fourth robbery occured on 10/14/05 at 11:45 p.m. on Varick and Christopher Columbus Dr.
- One victim robbed, actor stated he had a gun
- One actor described as follows:
- White or Hispanic male, mid 20s, medium build, wearing dark colored pants and a black
hooded sweatshirt

Please contact me via e-mail or telephone should you have any questions.

P.O. Dina Reilly "

Also, there was a mugging on Bright between Varick and Jersey on Dec. 16 that doesn't show. although maybe that was too recent...

I am glad the feedback was generally positive and I will certainly continue month over month as a tool for downtown. It is important that you use more transparent information to become more vocal in community group settings when the police are present. The more involved and aware you are the safer downtown will be

Per your inquiries/suggestions:

1) Including Time: As I ask for the data going forward I will request detail around time of incident. I think this is a solid suggestion. (I usually get the previous month?s data from the police mid month)

2) Missing Data: If there is data that appears to be missing (for example on Bright Street) I will follow up with the police as to why this was not included in this info. Please e-mail me and point out the incidents. This is the data that is provided to me by the police department and if there are instances that appear to be missing this is obviously concerning. The only data that is deliberately vague is home break-ins. This was done in order to keep the individual?s home anonymous - we mapped it to the block instead of listing the exact individuals home however the number of incidents should be exact

3) The Beacon is not in Ward E. It is on the border but voters in this complex are not part of Ward E

4) Is the site open architecture? Per Pablo who designed the site I believe it is.

5) Police on the beat ?I unfortunately don?t have any say at all over policing schedules, strategies, or rank, and in fairness three months is not enough time to really access trends just yet but we will get there. To me, in honesty, even though relatively speaking we have less crime than the rest of the city it does seem like there has been an increase even for us and it is very concerning. I?ll be looking to discuss what can be done together with Captain McDonough (who is a solid resource) in early January.

Have a happy and safe new years and If you have thoughts or suggestions please don?t hesitate to e-mail me at fulops@jcnj.org

Steve

I agree - this is a great start.

One thing though, what category would muggings fall under? Because none of the numerous muggings around Van Vorst/Bright/York over the past few months show up, unless I'm missing something.

And also (I noticed it only because I wanted to check out the javascript code accessing the google maps) - if you hit "view source" on your browser, you can see the exact dates and notes for each event...

But nice job - interesting to note all the numbers to the right (ok, except theft) are going up over the past 3 months... there's your trend.

Steve,

Thanks for the Map and all you are doing for Ward E. There has been a lot of improvements already. Here! Here! for the road improvements.

I do like the map, but I know there have been at least 2 or 3 muggings on Bright St (btwn Jersey and Pathmark) in the last 3 months and none of them are on the map. What is the criteria for the actual criminal events to be posted on the map?

Also, isn't it a little strange that there are so many crimes on near Erie and 4th and 5th... two blocks from a police station?

I think its time for some Police on the Beat. Or is this too much to ask? Or what has to happen before its too late?

What a great initiative, thanks for the info Steve.
Keep up the good work. With real information we can take action.

Has anyone else noticed that the monthly numbers and the flags don't always match up? (Yes, I've zoomed out the map to make sure I'm catching the entire district. For instance Nov. robberies total 9 but only 8 flags show up.) Maybe its my browser (safari)?

hey steve,

glad to see that you got this project going.
I had mentioned something like this a few months back.
http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... 0&forum=10#forumpost34833

a great site to use as a model for this is http://www.chicagocrime.org/

w the open api of Google Maps, you can create great 'mash up' sites just like that.

good start Steve!

would be happy to contribute other ideas.

Very nice. We appreciate all of good that you are doing for downtown residents!

A few suggestions, 1. legend to explain events/acronyms and 2. instructions and maybe examples in PDF.

This is really very interesting. Thanks for putting it together. I agree that if it's possible to add the time that the crimes took place, it would be additionally helpful. Thanks!

Thank you for the mapping. It is very useful. Can you also provide the written text from "Jersey City Ward E Police Event Reports" for those who prefer the written text instead of waiting for the map to download, clicking on every number and then clicking on every balloon? Do you know the time of day of the crimes? Thanks again.

Speaking of crime, I read on the Newport message board that there was a rape earlier this week inside the Lincoln apartment building on 10th Street. Apparently the victim was living on the first floor and the suspect came in through a window.

This is great, good start on the map. It will become more useful if it is updated frequently.

Also, people need to remember to always report these crimes so it can be added to the statistics.
