They were pulling the train from last week's accident out of the terminal.

From the looks of the pictures, I thought the only damages were the canopy and the structural integrity of that is in question. It didn't seem like the train hit the actual station walls. Although from the looks of it, it came quite close.

Yes, I was walking around there yesterday morning. You can walk around the station to the back via where the Ferry is to get into Hoboken.

Is there a way to walk from the Hudson River walkway in Jersey City to downtown Hoboken?

Do they have a path open (through the waiting room or the ferry?) to get around the terminal's platforms?

A similar accident occurred at the same station in December 1985, injuring 54 people. The 1985 crash was said to have been caused by a lubricant that had been applied to the tracks to test train wheels.[19] In May 2011, a PATH subway train crashed in the basement of Hoboken Terminal; investigators said that they will look into the possibility that the 2011 and 2016 incidents may be related.[23]

Hoboken Crash: Feds Can't Reach Black Box, Camera Because of Asbestos, Sources Say

Investigators trying to determine what caused a deadly commuter train crash in New Jersey were delayed Saturday in getting to the front of the mangled locomotive ? hindering the search for a key piece of evidence inside.

Crews couldn't gain access to the front cab of the doomed train ? where an event recorder and an outward-facing camera are trapped ? because the station the train crashed into in Hoboken suffered too much structural damage and the asbestos levels are too high, federal sources told NBC News.

On Friday, the dangerous levels of asbestos forced investigators to leave the century-old station, the sources said.

One event recorder, or "black box," has been recovered from the train that slammed into the Hoboken Terminal on Thursday morning at the height of rush hour, killing a woman who was standing on the platform and injuring more than 100 other people.

But investigators hit a snag while trying to gather information from that black box, too, as they couldn't download data in the field and had to send the recorder to its manufacturer, vice chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board, T. Bella Dinh-Zarr, said Friday.

The event recorder recovered from the locomotive of NJ Transit Pascack Valley Line train #1614. The recorder was shipped to the manufacturer to perform a download at their facility following an unsuccessful attempt to download data on scene.

Investigators have yet to interview the train's engineer, 48-year-old Thomas Gallagher, federal sources said Saturday afternoon. But toxicology tests on Gallagher were underway.

Gallagher is a 29-year veteran of New Jersey Transit, his father told NBC News.

His phone and the phones of the other two crew members involved in the crash ? a conductor and a brakeman ? have been confiscated so that investigators can determine whether any crew members might have been distracted, the federal sources said.

One federal source said investigators are still largely puzzled as to why the train entered the Hoboken station at such a high rate of speed. Investigators are expected to be at the site of the crash for at least another week.

I think the Driver was on a suicide mission. Because passengers on the first car said his door was open, could mean anything from just opening the door or it was something else. Since the passenger said it was unusual of the driver to do so. IT has never been done before. But didn't mind the view of what the driver sees, so he didn't pay it no mind. Then the driver sped as he was approaching what it should be a slow and decelerating stop. Because another passenger said she did not feel the driver was breaking and he acted nothing was wrong.

That train sped up as it approaches the terminal. You cannot speed beforehand because the train has to go to series of turns before it reaches the Hoboken Terminal. So at it turns to the terminal the train speeded. The question is why? Passengers didn't hear the breaks. NJT workers are saying that there's a dead man's pedal where if the Conductor has a medical issue or can't break it breaks it for them.

Hoboken woman, 34, killed in NJ Transit train crash identified

By Staff | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

HOBOKEN - The woman killed when a New Jersey Transit train slammed into a station Thursday morning has been identified as a 34-year-old Hoboken resident, according to the state medical examiner's office.

Fabiola Bittar de Kroon was on the train platform at the Hoboken station at 8:45 a.m. and was struck by flying debris as the train barrelled into the station, authorities have said. The crash caused major structural damage to the station.

Almost no trains currently run on "autopilot." (ATO / automatic train operation) MTA has a whopping two lines on ATO. AFAIK there are no regional rail systems using ATO.

And if an accident happens because the brakes fail, or because a corner gets too slick, or a vehicle gets stuck on the tracks, ATO is not going to magically avoid the issue.

Unless there's a conductors union or something, why is it still a thing?

1) The technology is nowhere near ready to get rid of all train drivers. That is decades away.

2) "Conductors" are the ones taking tickets or opening doors. "Drivers" operate the train.

Please, resist the urge to be ridiculous.

Trains are one of the safest modes of travel. They will be even safer once PTC is fully implemented.

I don't even remember the last time there was any sort of crash on NJT before today. Do you?

Every time the PATH train goes from NY to NJ or visa versa, the conductor will always to hang out in the cab and start chatting with the driver. Then when the train gets close to the next station, the conductor always goes sprinting out so they can open the doors for all the passengers who are waiting. It always makes me nervous that they are chatting and distracting the driver. Not very safe.

1. That's a shame.
2. Maybe Christie ordered the hit as a message to Fulop to not run for governorship? He likes to fux with hudson traffic...jk

Federal law already requires trains to add positive train control by December 2018. (And provided no money for it.)

NJT has presumably already started installing PTC in some sections; PATH definitely has. Not sure about MTA, LIRR etc.

Plus, train derailments aren't limited to the Northeast. We only hear / care about them because they're nearby.

This info might help from a Rockland Co. website - another NJ.com article shows the train as the No. 1614 - both articles linked below:

An NJ Transit Pascack Valley Line train that originated in Spring Valley crashed into the Hoboken train station during the morning rush hour, killing at least one person and injuring more than 100, some critically.

The crash occurred at about 8:30 a.m. ET at the Lackawanna Station off of Hudson Place. It is believed to have been the train that originated at 7:23 a.m. in Spring Valley in Rockland County.
