We can worry about that in 5 years.

OMG, don't you ever have anything kind to say? Why would it be good news to hear that PK's lease will be up in a few years ? Do you think there are too many hipsters shopping at PK??? To the people who frequent this small, family-run store, it's not good news.

Probably. One of the issues now is that the upstairs is unused because you can only get there through Tender Shoot.

I won't comment on the price because I have no idea what other spaces go for.

I guess neither one of you actually read the article. The quoted rent includes both floors, for a total space of 4800 square feet.

I appreciate P&K a lot. Great selection, very friendly and very clean. Its rare to see a family owned and operated business take as much pride in what they do today. For that, I'll keep going there until they leave.

PS - the article got a few things wrong (the closures of The Kitchen and Bell + Gray had little or nothing to do with Restaurant Row growing too quickly) but their main point (the outrageous monthly nut for that space) is definitely worthy of discussion.

The original post mentioned a $15k/month increase, which means they were paying $17.50 a foot up until this renewal which is pretty bargain basement. Granted, they probably negotiated that years ago.

The problem with retail space is that nobody really knows what anyone else is paying. Sure, you can look at previous listings but it seems to be a pretty common tactic in 07302 to throw huge numbers up and negotiate back down to reality.

Hopefully the Lee's on Grove are tipped off to the Tender Shoot closing. They're very nice people and the selection is decent, but not as good as P&K and TenderShoot. I see that they did just redo their flooring.

Admittedly this is trivial but...

Since P&K is now gonna have lines like a Manhattan Trader Joes, people should know that there is one line for both registers and it runs along the wall. The sons are too nice to tell people standing at the second register that they're in the wrong spot, so that person ultimately cuts the line.

Does anyone know when Tender Shoot Farm is closing? Is it the end of this month or sometime later?

I will miss Tender Shoot. Sure, there are other places to buy food, but they often had specialty items that you couldn't find elsewhere in JC, and they saved me from having to hunt in the city. One time, I got overly ambitious and decided to make gumbo. I looked at Shop Rite and a couple of other places for fil? powder but couldn't find it. As a last resort, I poked my head inside Tender Shoot and there it was on their spice rack.

Seriously, it's not the area is a food desert. FWIW, there has been talk of them retiring for a few years now. I'm sure rent hikes don't help, but this was not unexpected.

I concur. From the middle of the street I think it is a very doable throw for maybe say...an athlete of some sort. Right over Morlees.

P&K is right down the street from Tendershoot on Newark Ave.

I love P&K, but it's small, and tucked away. the neighborhood will miss having a grocery store on the plaza. but hey, as long as we get another bar...
