You can see the racial/ethnic breakdown on the NCES website:
NCES 2013-14 CCD for McNair You can dig into the breakdown by gender and race/ethnicity by grade level by downloading the CCD public school universe file at http://nces.ed.gov/ccd/pubschuniv.asp.

No. He should at least get his numbers right if he's' going to go on a racist rant. 2000 SAT's is nothing to howl about. It's barely "selective school" territory. In 2007 "Harvard turned down 1,100 student applicants with perfect 800 scores on the SAT math exam"

I'd ALSO like to include a socioeconomic quota, to give poorer families an opportunity to send their child there - void of a racial background but focused on their financial means.

Try Harvard with Asians with 2000 SAT scores being turned down for "less privledged miniories"
How da fcks you think an imbescile like Michele Obama got into and thru Princeton. Plenty of other than "Cat Hole Licks" @ Prep and St. Doms. Pay to Play in JC or try Alpine in Bergen Cty. Quote:

my two older kids graduated from McNair and I have a Sophomore there now. She's mostly Asian and claimed as such. I don't think they're strictly enforcing the quotas. There's a lot of Southeast and South Asians, and if you include Egyptians they definitely are over 25%
There's a lot of other extra-curricular activities including Sports and JROTC. Lots of clubs, too. The academic workload is heavy and advanced - my daughter had AP World History as a Freshman AP Chemistry this year, so it's a little crazy, but leaves very little time to get in trouble.

I wonder how long before an Asian family or organization would sue. This is totally racial discrimination against Asians.

I'm looking at the student profile.
https://k12.niche.com/dr-ronald-e-mcna ... gh-school-jersey-city-nj/ If the niche.com site is right, the racial quota is not strictly enforced... Any insights here from this forum? I'm not particularly against affirmative action, I just hope it is more based on income than race.

Thank you MDM that's what I hear too. Both my wife and myself are Asian, 100%, and we don't want to cheat on picking the racial category. It truly sucks though to be Asian on being admitted into top academic schools in JC. We do NOT want to bring up our kid in a way that focuses on academic performance solely. But it looks like the system is very much against us...

Thank you iGreg. Looks like both private high schools are top notch but religious... We are not particularly religious and would prefer not to attend a religious school. Does it mean that we'll have to move... Our kid is going to reach school age soon. If there isn't a good option for local high schools then we'll move, like most others do... However we do like JC a lot and would like to explore a bit before we really make the move.

It's in full force at McNair and if able to afford St Doms or Prep for your kids - do so.

Not sure what the numbers are now. However one of my neighbors's daughters (white female) went to McNair and he said given the current makeup of the city that it allowed for a relatively LOW score. That's just anecdotal but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. The quota system is part of a court consent decree to settle a previous discrimination suit. If there had been no such lawsuit or findings of past discrimination this program would not pass constitutional muster given the current supreme court, and it may be on shaky legal ground as is.

It's their choice of which to check off on the application. I knew several, and they all took the race option of where their score would give them the better advantage for admission.

They go with the highest odds, what else? MDM is not correct about whites being a hard category, Asian is FAR harder, most Asians who can claim white, like mixed race or central Asian, do so. There were only 5 white boys in my son's freshman class of ~180. But it's impossible to know how many got in claiming white. I'll let you know about white girls in a month! This is an issue that brings out my libertarian stripe, Government should not be in the business of race, if for no other reason that its self reported. My Ukrainian Ashkenazi grandfather emigrated from Brazil in 1925 with a Brazilian passport, I actually have the documents. Does that make me and my kids Latino? Oh, and the test IS the PSAT with a McNair specific essay added.

When my daughter applied there about 10 years ago I thought the then-quota was 15% white. The scores are not relative to the student body as a whole but rather your score within the pool of applicants in your racial category. The entrance exam wasn't the usual PSAT given to Jr. High Students. It was the full SAT exam. As a result of the quota system there were students who ranged from very qualified for advanced-placement courses to students who were barely at 7th Grade level. Still, the college-matriculation % for McNair is impressively high for such a diverse city school...

If you fall into the Asian or White category, you may need to have really high academic / test scores relative to the student body as a whole to get in. Even then, that might not be enough.

Meh, i have no problem with it. I didn't get in way back in the day (waitlisted) and it certainly wasn't the worst thing that happened to me. I've got no problems in a city as diverse as this one in using affirmative action to ensure a big salad bowl of students.
That said, I think the numbers need some tweaking to reflect the current demographics, but i have no problem with the principle

McNair Academic High School - racial quota

Hi all,
I stumble upon the wikipedia page of McNair Academic High and saw:
With the primary goal of diversity through affirmative action, the school enrollment is based on a quota of 25% White, 25% Black, 25% Hispanic, and 25% Other (mostly Asian).
However, the source link to JCBOE is broken. I'm wondering if the quota is still there today and if there is any plan to change that.
