No, that is just my wishful thinking/suggestion, if they read this board. I just got back from Kauai and that's pretty much all I ate, too. It is not unusual for the fishmonger to sell poke. Stateside, my favorite poke place is in Newport Beach, CA. The line for poke is always there, often stretching outside the door. The stuff is fresh! With a side of avocado...

Do they sell anything "shovel ready"?
Ceviche or whatnot?

And they're open! Today was the opening day, and it was awesome having them ply us with free food and drink while we purchased their goodies. Glad to have em here and at the market.

In addition to the concern sustainability, there's the concern of slave labor:

Right now 50% or more of the seafood available is farmed. Even Blue fin tuna will be farmed now (some Japanese researchers figured out how to get them to breed in captivity).
None of it is GMO though. The only GMO fish has been stuck in regulatory hell since 1994. Its a salmon that has gene from another fish to allow it to grow at twice the rate of wild salmon. It is specifically designed to be grown in tanks on land. I have been toying with the idea of building a tank in my basement to raise fish (aquaponics). I think though my wife would kill me if I started that project before finishing upgrading the kitchen. Link to the farmed tuna (can't seem to get the Youtube embed feature to work) https://youtu.be/m4r9XC6Ta-s

I hate to say it, but unless you're willing to pay $15-20/lb (or even more for things like wild copper river salmon), then you probably should not be eating fish these days. Anything cheaper is probably not sustainably sourced. Just the way it is.
I'd rather support this store, if their sourcing is sound, than go to Shop-rite and eat tilapia farmed in Vietnam or Honduras under very questionable conditions. Price to be paid for decades of overfishing.

Does anyone know if this market is indeed selling sustainable seafood? If the market can label product based on MSC or Monterey Bay Aquarium ratings, that would be a big selling point for me and those who care about this stuff. Thanks.

I'm eager for a good fish place I'm just worried about his prices. It could be the most super-sustainable, locally-sourced, organic, non-GMO, humanely raised, farm-to-table, small batch, artisanal Swai filets, but if the price is too high, it doesn't matter.

Here here! Hopefully it's priced right where it's sustainable for the store and the ethical fishermen. That's all we can ask for.

Kudos to them for charging $17/lb for cod if that's accurate. That's a reasonable if not cheap price for fresh, responsibly sourced atlantic cod. The cod supply is f**ked in relation to historical levels. When you buy random supermarket cod for 8.99/lb, chances are you're supporting a part of the industry that would catch every last fish in the sea by any means necessary, current and future stocks and bycatch be damned. Atlantic cod is one of the most overfished species out there. Do yourselves and your children and their children a favor-eat sustainably sourced cod and other fish. Pay a little more. It costs more to bring fish to market when you target a specific species and consciously decide not to catch every last fish out there. Or learn what else is sustainable. There are plenty of reasonanly priced options. Eat previously frozen fish-pacific cod is sustainable and delicious. Or eat something else. I love fish , probably more than most(I'm no Troy McClure though), but I've sworn off delicious, delicious toro and many other species. The technology used to hunt these fish is just way too advanced, way beyond sporting, and it's got to slow down. Don't be an entitled, cheap, consumer. Do 2 minutes of research on what's sustainable and what it costs, open your mind to other species, consider frozen fish. I'm a fisherman by the way.

Yeah, I have access to super-fresh quality tuna for $17/lb. Patagonian toothfish, aka chilean sea bass for $19/lb. These are premium species; cod is not. We shall see about his prices and quality. I hope he can be competitive.

Shoprite usually has more than enough stuff, and the 555 Market and the one near Bayonne (can't remember name) are good for bigger orders.

I've bought from Asian Market twice. Never again. Nothing was labeled, all shellfish and salmon farmed. Asking to have filets pulled from a whole fish was not a service that they performed. Suggest that people extend their mental maps to include the fish market in Chelsea market if the new Jersey Ave. market doesn't have what they want at a price you consider reasonable.

Not dedicated fish mongers but they both have a decent selection - guess there is more to JC than the little downtown enclave the clueless wander around.

There are no more fish stores in Hudson County so this is good news. I am glad they have a brick and mortar store front. If you are on the bike at a farmer's market it might be too hot by time you get back home to carry fish with you. The reviews are all positive so looking forward to opening day.

This is great news. I've bought scallops and salmon from their stand several times. Always excellent. But no, not cheap.
They have a website http://www.jcfishstand.com/ and a facebook page. They do not list prices.
