Sigh... you say the above as if family-centric is diametrically opposite to wearing something other than athletic sneakers. If anything, I wish *more* people would bust out their "ferragamo's over the weekend". There is nothing wrong with keeping things classy and stylish. But, that's a whole different conversation. If indeed Raval is enforcing some sort of dress code, even if loosely, that would definitely make the place even more appealing to me.

+1 Not sure why anyone would find it odd that a restaurant wants to keep things classy by banning athletic sneakers.

I was there over the weekend. I didn't see families with children and they do not have high chairs. Nevertheless, when I asked about children because my niece was considered joining us with her toddler, I was told he would be quite welcome -- that "children are our future."

Does anyone know if this place is "kid-" or "family-" friendly?

If the sneaker rule is in fact true, that kills it a little bit for me. It's a casual neighborhood with a largely family-centric vibe. I doubt anybody's busting out the ferragamo's over the weekend. Not like it's a club or something.

If this is, in fact, their rule, they have my vote. I'm all in favor of banning sneakers, and people who know the style names of sneakers.

tommyc_37,
They were in the running/lifestyle category.. i.e. Air Max 1s and Flyknits. Saw a friend hanging outside - on a mid-dinner smoke break - and he'd gotten in with Air Jordans so I was confused. Didn't want to ask the bouncer "what about him?" fearing that I might end up screwing my buddy over... No big deal though, we were just caught off guard considering no other restaurant in the area - that I'm aware of at least - has a no sneaker rule.

Are you talking about basketball sneakers, or like casual hangout sneakers?

Attempted to stop by Friday night, but since my friends and I were wearing sneakers, we weren't allowed in. Is Raval meant to be formal/semi-formal or was this "no sneaker" policy in place for opening night only?

Yes, this is accurate. Which makes it more interesting to go for the full "racion" price-wise - and these look quite good!

Without knowing for sure, my guess is the "Tapas" portion is the small 3-4 bites dish, the "Media Raciones" is a bigger small plate in between tiny tapas and main entree (maybe 7-8 bites), and the "Raciones" is entree-equivalent.

a bit confused by that menu.
is just the top portion tapas and the media raciones and raciones parts actual meals? or are they part of the 3-4 bite small plates. cuz they can kiss my ass if they think i'm paying 16 bucks for 4 bites of oxtail.

Great Space, wow what a transformation. Its worth a visit, if you are not into the food its a great spot for a drink.. Only downside is the bar is in the back.

I went with a group of four last night and it was very good.
All the plates we got were delicious. Atmosphere is nice, servers and staff were all very friendly. The owners came over to ask us how things were and made food and drink recommendations for us. Their drink menu is as good as the food menu. As was mentioned above, the bill can get out of hand in a hurry if you're going full bore on drinks and plates, but it's a perfect date spot for food and I'm sure I'll be back there for drinks soon. So yeah whatever.

The two are COMPLETELY different. Spanish tapas (which are, really, the only real tapas) are supposed to be small plates, and traditionally were bite-size. The whole point to a tapas, and how they came to be, was that they were "freebies" given to a customer when he ordered a drink (usually a small glass of red wine, or beer) and the tapa (Spanish for "lid") was placed on top of the drink, as a freebie or enticement for the customer to keep ordering drinks (at the very minimum, it would slow down the effects of alcohol, which meant the customer could stick around longer and order more alcohol). Of course, tapas are now small plates that consist of three or four bites, but they are still fairly small (when done right). Portuguese tapas are really much bigger and heftier.

Good to hear. As in Spain - the place will succeed or fail on the vibe as much as the tapas. Will try it soon.

I haven't tried Porto but I did try Raval yesterday and the place rocks! It was fully crowded including in the "basement" which I used to frequent while at Synergy. Tapas were amazing, I felt like I was back in BCN. Almendras con queso and the lamb meatballs in a amazing sauce were my fav. The deco is great. It is NYC prices so you know but worth the trip folks!

Is Spanish Tapas that much different from the Portuguese Tapas Porto has been serving to warrant this statement?

Bill Gelman | For NJ Advance Media JERSEY CITY -- Take a stroll around downtown Jersey City these days, and finding places to eat is pretty easy. Up until this week, one specific type of food has been missing -- Spanish tapas. That piece of the dining puzzle is officially sliding into place this weekend, as Raval -- the latest venture from the folks behind Satis and Lucky 7 -- opens its doors. In putting this project together, the ownership team of Geza Gulas, Andrew Siegel and Michael Garcia, spent a lot of time making sure this fresh concept came together as authentically as possible. The inspiration comes from the Raval section of Barcelona, which was once considered a rough, not so tourist-friendly part of town. The area has more recently experienced a gentrification, much like Jersey City. Story

Dude, it's a Dive Bar, LMFAO!! That's the vibe they're going for.
They even let Paco y Taco clean up in there before opening, so it's not too clean. Ravel ROCKS!

Restaurant, real estate partners to bring 'taste of modern Spain' to Jersey City
By Steven Rodas | For The Jersey Journal December 18, 2014 at 7:10 AM Whether you've savored the Southern BBQ-style food of Lucky 7 Tavern or relished the Mediterranean fare of Satis Bistro, you've got Restaurant Development Group (RDG) to thank. RDG, made up of restaurant and real estate partners Andy Siegel, Michael Garcia and Geza Gulas, have developed a keen eye for prime Jersey City locations to launch unique and diverse eateries. "Each of the RDG partners bring different skill sets and thought processes to the table and we feel that is what helps make us a strong, solid partnership," said Garcia. "We are interested in doing things well and continually growing and expanding." The trio, which opened Lucky 7 Tavern in 2007 and Satis Bistro in 2010, is on the verge of opening a third restaurant in Jersey City next year. "Raval Tapas Bar and Cocktail Lounge is anticipated to open by early February 2015," said Gulas. "Raval, named after the trendy Barcelona neighborhood, will be modern and stylish with many interesting design features." The pics on the website show the walls stripped to the studs and the floors stripped to the sub floors (diff layouts and floor types for restaurants and gyms) so I think the "fishy" smell or the smell of "BO" should be gone.
Here's the link to their website: http://www.ravaljc.com/
